- New TUAW feature: Mac 101
Filed under: TUAW Business, Mac 101
Mac users of all levels enjoy our scribblings here at TUAW. When you have such a diverse audience, and are so familiar with Macs yourself, you sometimes forget that not everyone is a Mac pro (ha! Get it? Mac pro? Ahh, I'm so funny). That's why we have decided to launch a new series of posts here at TUAW called 'Mac 101.' These posts are aimed squarely at those folks who are new to the Mac. We'll be sharing some tips and tricks that people familiar with Macs have been using forever, but neophytes might find handy.
If you have any suggestions for features, or series, that you would like to see here at TUAW leave us a note in the comments. We're here for you, man.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Cool tools, Tips and tricks, Troubleshooting
In the comments to our recent post on Switching Mom to Mac, reader Hervé Sainct pointed us to this hint on macOSXhints on making remote tech support as easy as possible for the recipient. Basically it centers on a neat little program Schnitz Remote, which is basically a graphical wrapper around the open-source VNC server Vine. To use Schnitz Remote you need to get it installed on the remote machine, and then start up the VNC client Chicken of the VNC and set it to listen on your machine. The person requesting help just needs to type your IP (or domain) into the window on Schnitz Remote and it'll automatically connect to your listening CotVN and allow you to take over their computer. The hint on macOSXhints takes this to the next level by using an AppleScript to fill in the IP, so the remote user doesn't have to do anything but double-click an email attachment. If you regularly have to do remote tech support for less tech savvy relatives, some of these suggestions may be helpful.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Cult of Mac, Odds and ends, Apple
This one is for all you who miss the old rainbow Apple logo. What seems to be the original Apple logo (pre-incorporation in 1976) is making the rounds of the internets today. So apparently the Apple belongs to Newton. I have to say; it's a good thing they got rid of this one early.
So which version of the Apple logo is your favorite?

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/04/13/blast-from-the-past-original-apple-logo/#comments - Pogue tests 802.11n routers, blasts Netgear
In today's New York Times, friend to Mac users and finder of lost loves, David Pogue does a nice user-focused job of reviewing four 802.11n wireless routers (story, video), evaluating performance and ease of setup for the Apple, Belkin, Netgear & Linksys offerings. His conclusion: the Airport Extreme, while slightly more expensive than the other units and lacking Gigabit support on the Ethernet side, is far and away the best performer (up to 90mbit transfer speeds, almost double the best results with the other three routers, testing details in his video) and certainly the easiest to configure and control. He also points out that current Macs are firmware-updatable to 802.11n, while most other PC manufacturers will make you buy a new card to get your speedy on.
For the real entertainment, however, check out Pogue's behind-the-story blog post. His experience with the Netgear software installation for a USB 802.11n adapter -- a madness-inducing swirl of EULAs, unsigned drivers, UI design from Graphix-R-Us, and plain ol' Windows user-hostile behavior -- is both familiar and chuckle-worthy.
Update: Clarified the 2nd paragraph to note that Pogue's issues with the Netgear installation were specific to the adapter, not the router itself.Read | Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

OS X's built-in dictionary has naughty words. Who knew? The following gallery will walk you through the steps it takes to censor your dictionary and prevent innocent young 'uns from looking up the proper meanings of these words. You'll need the Property List Editor, which is available as part of Apple's free Developer Tools.
Update: Parental Controls are a built-in but optional feature of OS X Tiger. They will be an even bigger built-in but optional feature of OS X Leopard. Those readers who feel that the existence of these controls are disturbing in and of themselves may want to take their concerns directly to Apple, who has built and implemented them in their operating system. Otherwise, non-native English speakers please take note that the post was written in a light hearted tone.
