- Apple announces Final Cut Server
Filed under: Software, Video, Other Events, Apple
Apple today announced an entirely new product at their NAB special event. Final Cut Server takes the grunt work of video editing away from the client computer (encoding, media asset management) and puts it on a central server. With improved workflows, review tools, and automated encoding and publishing Final Cut Server will be popular.
Apple is taking an aggressive stance on pricing, as is usual with their Final Cut products. 10 licenses will cost you $999 while unlimited licenses go for $1999.
We'll have more on this when Apple updates their site.

Filed under: Rig of the Week
This week's rig was chosen for one reason only: It made us shudder. We realize that the Cube wasn't exactly Apple's greatest success, but this is like using a Ferrari as a doorstop. At least we can take consolation in the fact that it's not at the dump. Poor little Cube.

Filed under: Humor, Cult of Mac
It looks like the crew at Insanely Great Tees is on to something with their 'Steve Jobs for president' shirt. My wife and I decided to share the Sunday paper and a cup of coffee this morning (I know, even at 27/26, we're already getting old!), and what does she spot in the comic section? Why, a Rudy Park comic proclaiming the iPhone as "one of the greatest turning points in human history", and asking "Steve Jobs in '08?" I've honestly never read Rudy Park before, but I find it pretty funny that it's parodying the Apple-obsessed among us in this way. The fact that Steve Jobs - typically known mainly to the nerds in the crowd - has made the pages of the Sunday comic is also pretty interesting.
If you want to see a higher-res version of this comic, check out our new Cult of Mac gallery which we can update in the future with more Apple sightings like this.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Video, Other Events, Apple
That's right, kids, Apple is holding a special event today at NAB (the National Association of Broadcasters) get together in Las Vegas. Will they announce something? Will they just show off existing stuff? I have no idea, but considering 8 core Mac Pros were just released I am thinking there won't be too much hardware news. My money is on a new version of Final Cut Studio.
Our friends at Engadget will be liveblogging the event, and we here at TUAW will be posting about whatever is announced as soon as it is announced (assuming there is anything post worthy, of course).
The event kicks off at 2pm EST.

Mail.app junkies who demand more from that little red Dock badge - rejoice! Dockstar, the go-to app for adding up to 5 new notification badges to Mail.app's icon that we've mentioned before, has received some great new features for a version 2.0 upgrade. New in this version are features like counting messages in nested folders, counting flagged, junk or total messages, sound notifications for each badge and even a screensaver and Dashboard widget.
Check out the changelog for more details, or snag a new copy. A license costs a mere $8.

Leopard has been delayed, we know, so let's pretend it's October with this gallery at ThinkSecret of build 9A410 (while we're at it, Hackint0sh has a gallery as well). This time around we see a number of UI improvements (like the screenshot of Automator at right) and lots of shots of Mail's new "Stationery" feature. Personally, I find image-heavy HTML email annoying, but what do I know?
Sit back, browse the gallery and tell yourself, "It's almost October...It's almost October..."

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/04/15/thinksecret-posts-new-leopard-gallery/#comments - The Little Things: drag and drop
Filed under: OS, Software, Tips and tricks
TUAW reader Chris Roberts was right: it's been far too long since our last post in The Little Things series, so I figured I'd pick up the slack with a really handy feature of Mac OS X: drag and drop. Sure, most OSes these days can drag and drop at least some things, but Apple has gone to great lengths to build this workflow-enhancing feature into so many facets of Mac OS X's experience, I don't really have time to cover them all (and there's no doubt that I don't even know about them all). Take my screenshot for example: I'm dragging an image of our puppy out of iPhoto on the left into iChat's icon well on the right. A simple gesture, sure, but a tiny example of how powerful this functionality can become. Try a few of these other drag and drop operations on for size:
- Drag a file onto an app's icon in the Finder or Dock; its icon should darken, signifying that it can handle whatever you're throwing at it. Hold the Command key to force an app to open a file if it isn't initially cooperating.
- Drag images from a browser (except Firefox and Camino) into a Mail message or iChat window to easily share them; no clunky 'right-click, Save, Open' workflows here.
- Pause a QuickTime movie, click on the video and drag out to the desktop to create an instant snapshot of the frame you paused on (this might only work in QuickTime Pro - can anyone verify?).
- Drag a file onto a Terminal window to instantly create a path.
- Highlight text in most apps, then click and drag it to the desktop to create a text snippet, or into another window (Mail, iChat and Yojimbo are great examples) for a drag 'n drop take on copy/paste.
