- Flickr Find: Leopard is late
Filed under: Cult of Mac, Odds and ends, Leopard, Flickr Find
TUAW reader Matt Laurie whipped up this fun desktop pic. Show the whole world that you are anxiously awaiting Apple's latest OS offering, in style. I have to say that I am OK with this delay. What's 4 months between friends? That being said, if Apple delays Leopard once more that will spell trouble and make me think of a certain often delayed OS offering from a little company in Redmond.
Update: It looks like Matt removed the pic for some reason.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

You've bit the bullet and plunked down the cash for an Apple TV. Now you are totally in love with the thing, and want to banish all your physical DVDs to the dustbin of history. However, you don't just want to rebuy all those movies on iTunes. No, no, you somehow want to make them playable on the Apple TV.
Macworld's Jonathan Seff lists a few ways you can accomplish this using two of TUAW's favorite apps: MediaFork (soon to be HandBrake once more) and VisualHub. Rip, stream, watch. Apple should be proud.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Software, Odds and ends
I have to admit I'm a fan of Ukraine-based BeLight Software. I regularly use both Mail Factory and Swift Publisher, and now they have released an interesting new application: Live Interior 3D. As you would expect from the name, it's a Computer Aided (Interior) Design package. Basically, it includes both a top-down 2D plan view (like a blue-print) in which you can locate walls, doors and windows to lay out the rooms, and drop in furniture, decorations, etc. Then there is a 3D mode that renders the design live and allows you to "walk" around inside your rooms. It includes a variety of 3D objects (with an IKEA feel) and you can import many more from Google's online warehouse for SketchUp. Unfortunately, as you can see from my meager attempt above, it does include Computer Aided Tastefulness.
Live Interior 3D is available either by download or in a boxed edition for $79.95 (non-profit pricing is available). A demo (which precludes saving) is available for download.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Software, UNIX / BSD, Developer
Everybody knows that at the heart of OS X lies a powerful UNIX/BSD installation, but actually installing UNIX software can be a bit of pain, requiring command line trickery at least, and sometimes even compiling from the source (and dealing with dependencies, etc.). Fortunately, the Fink package management system goes a long way toward making this easier by packing much of the software in a relatively easy to use format. However, Fink still requires some command line chops, so Phynchronicity takes the Fink idea to the next level. It's an OS X GUI for installing Fink packages that's as simple as navigating through the categories and hitting the install button.
Phynchronicity is $20 and a demo is available (Fink must already be installed on your system).

Filed under: Productivity, Tips and tricks, Mac 101
Last year (pre Mac 101) we told you about the ability to customize your Finder toolbar with folders for quick access, but you can also put applications there to use with drag and drop operations. For instance, in my Finder tool bar I have AppZapper, ImageWell, and Path Finder. This way I can easily uninstall applications, do simple image edits (especially resizing), or reveal the file in Path Finder just by dragging things onto the appropriate icon. This can be a real time saver for any applications you use regularly, particularly by drag and drop.
To customize your Finder toolbar, just right-click on an empty area of the toolbar and choose "Customize Toolbar..." You'll want to have another Finder window open to your Applications folder and then you can just drag and drop application icons from the other Finder window onto the toolbar of the window with the customize sheet open.
Update: As several folks have rightly pointed out you don't need to use the "Customize Toolbar..." command, though I was under the (perhaps mistaken) impression that Apple officially recommended doing it this way.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
