- Found Footage: Apple TV Plugin Loader
AwkwardTV has just posted this video demonstrating a new Apple TV 'meta plug-in' that retrieves and installs other plug-ins from around the net. Developer Alan_Quartermain built this brilliant tool that displays a list of third party items from the AwkwardTV site and allows you to select which one you want to install. It's currently in a private beta. If you'd like to test it, you may want to hang out over at the #awkwardtv IRC channel.

It isn't often that developers unveil their cards, but then they do, their user's ears typically perk up. Such is the case with Dave Watanabe's release of Xtorrent 1.0 v40 in which he announced two big new features now, and a few juicy ones coming down the road. As of this new version, Xtorrent Pro (the registered version) offers per-torrent bandwidth limits and support for the Azureus/utorrent compatible peer exchange, which should apparently help increase some transfer speeds.
Using his crystal ball, however, Watanabe also announced three major features we can strike off the request list: selective file downloading, encryption, and torrentcast auto-downloading (though I should point out that Xtorrent can already subscribe to RSS feeds of torrents - it just doesn't auto-snag 'em yet). Dave announced that these features are "absolutely" planned for a future release (or spread out across more than one), though we'll all just have to sit tight as these things naturally fall under the tried and true "they'll be done when they're done" policy.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Humor, Cult of Mac, Apple
In my time I've been accused of being an Apple fanboy, but this girl takes it to the next level. On celebritytattoos.org we find this lovely collection of the 32 geekiest tattoos, with our favorite company logo clearly taking pride of place. I can't say I approve, but you've got to respect the Apple devotion! You just have wonder how she's going to feel about it in a few years.

Filed under: iPod Family, Odds and ends
Today's Apple-related human interest story centers on employees of the UK's Royal Mail. MacWorld UK reports that their communal iPod has been confiscated by management.
The iPod was provided by the Royal Mail to improve working conditions at a sorting depot in Newcastle. After one worker loaded a "rude spoof version" of "Oops, I did it again" (originally by musical maestro B. Spears[1]), the iPod was confiscated and disciplinary action launched. A Royal Mail spokesman said: "Royal Mail has an absolute policy of respect for all, and total opposition to any form of harassment." I'm pretty sure that being forced to listen to "Oops, I did it again" whether in its original or spoof version counts as musical assault but I don't quite see how it's "harassment". Here's hoping for a speedy return of the workers' iPod.
[1] No Köchel catalog numbering for "Oops, I did it again" is available at this time

File this one under, tons of potential but not there yet. TranslateIt! is an interesting foreign language dictionary application from what appears to be a Russian software company. The application comes in two versions, one shareware and the other free, but it is only the shareware version that does the cool trickery you see above. It can be set to "scan" the text under your cursor and pop up a floating window with a dictionary entry for that word (this is somewhat similar to the built-in OS X dictionary's shortcut: ⌘ + ⌃ + D, but TranslateIt! does not require any shortcut -- you merely need to hover over the text). Unfortunately, the free version lacks the "scanning" and only allows you to type terms into its search box (similar to Dictionary.app). Both versions are plagued by very bad decisions on user interface design, including gratuitous use of the cube and flip transformation effects.
Of course the strength of any dictionary program lies in the quality of its dictionaries and it's here that TranslateIt! falls flat. It includes several simple dictionaries built in (e.g. English-French, English-Russian, etc.) and there are more available for download, but in playing with it I found the entries to be much too basic for serious use. There are links to open-source dictionaries, but no instructions as to how to use them.
The other problem with TranslateIt! is the cost. While there is the freeware version, to get the cool scanning costs $24.95 per year or $64.95 for a lifetime subscription. For those kinds of prices, the dictionary content would have to be much better than it is. When I saw this I was very excited, because something like this could make reading sites in languages I sort of know, but not well, much more convenient. As it is, however, I can't really give it my full recommendation at this price. There is a demo available for download to check it out for yourself, and the freeware version is probably worth a look as a simple foreign language dictionary.

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Software, Internet Tools
As long as I can remember - at least since Mac OS X 10.4 and possibly even 10.3 - Mail.app hasn't been able to maintain column widths to save its life. It doesn't matter if I never touch the window width, or if I manually set each column exactly where I want it, or even if I ask nicely - Mail.app almost seems to enjoy playing an obnoxious game of 'what me worry?' with my column widths, tossing them to the digital wind at every opportunity. Run a search? Hello suddenly-double-sized-Attachment-column. Put on a pot of coffee in between TUAW posts? Better make extra room for the Date Received column, cuz there's no telling how much space it's going to gobble up behind my back.
Ok fine, for the record: I don't actually believe Mail.app can tell when I'm making coffee. Still, the point stands: Mail.app needs to brush up on the 'How to be a Good Lil App' rules and learn how to keep everything in its place.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Apple Corporate, Apple, Retro Mac
If you're a Mac geek in Menlo Park, California, listen up. TechShop on Independence Drive will host an evening with Daniel Kottke, Apple Employee #12, and the only employee to have worked on the Apple I, Apple II, Apple III and the original Macintosh. Mr. Kottke will speak on "The features that made Apple's products winners in the market place," and working versions of each of those classic machines will be on hand. It all starts at 7:00 PM PST.
As TUAW tipster Taylor points out, Woz himself has a tendency to show up at these public "nerd events," but we aren't making any promises.
Thanks, Taylor!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
