- New Get a Mac Ads
Filed under: Switchers, Cult of Mac, Apple
Apple has posted some new Get a Mac ads. "Flashback" (above) has Mac and PC as kids doing then just about what they do now. And "Computer Cart" lampoons Windows' cryptic error messages. The last of this set ("Security") has been out for a while. Fun stuff!
Thanks, Josh!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Kate Milon posted about another possible iPod in Space on her personal weblog. According to an email she received from a NASA engineer, astronauts may take small personal items with them on shuttle flights. Pilot Lee Archambault has chosen his 0.55 ounce iPod shuffle, says the letter, and it may require a high-altitude modified case for the player to work. This wouldn't be the first SpacePod that we have covered here (here, and here). And if you are more interested in Space on your iPod than iPods in Space, check out these NASA podcasts.

Today with so many of us using our digital cameras to shoot short video segments, it's especially easy to forget that we're dealing with videos and turn the camera on its side for a portrait orientation. Unfortunately, most video programs are not set up to handle portrait video. The video ends up displaying on its side. QuickTime Pro makes it easy to recover from this kind of shooting calamity and restore the orientation you intended. Here's a gallery showing you how.

Here's one for our readers in North America. As of this writing, you've got six days to pay your dues to Uncle Sam. You know how the saying goes, "There only two things you must do in this life: Die and pay your taxes." Since there's no avoiding it (unless you think prison sounds like fun), then you might as well make the process somewhat pleasant by using your Mac.
There's a great article at Macinstruct all about filing with your Mac. They compare apps like TurboTax, TaxCut and TaxAct (both the boxed and unboxed versions) and explain how to apply for an extension - all with your Mac.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Software, Productivity, Internet Tools
Someone must have answered Rod Schmidt's call for AppleScripters, as he has just released PackRat 1.1, a major update to his offline Backpack syncing app that brings double-whammy support for both AppleScript and Automator. You can now get almost all your Backpack data via script, which means power users can do all sorts of extra-cool nerdy things now. A 'Synchronize with Backpack' Automator action is also included, offering easy access for the rest of us to set up auto-downloads in the morning or before we leave for a trip (hint: run the action as an app attached to an iCal event).
Check out Rod's announcement post for more details and to download a copy of the new PackRat version. As usual, PackRat will function as a non-expiring demo that allows working with 4 pages, while a license costs $24.95.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Today Apple announced that MGM will sell its catalog of older films at the US iTunes store. To kick things off, "Dances With Wolves," "Mad Max," "The Great Train Robbery," and "Rocky" should be available for purchase some time today. More titles will be added during the coming weeks. (MGM owns the largest movie library in the world.)The movies will be distributed in the current "Near-DVD" resolution of 640x480, a fact which makes Apple TV owners cry. And ask why. Because if Apple were going to start offering High Def movies any time soon, why wouldn't they have MGM in on that announcement and make it an even bigger to do?

What's better than a Dashboard widget that can display a Mac OS X kernel panic? A full-on screensaver that can simulate one, of course! Mark Johns of Doomlaser has built an eerily realistic kernel panic screensaver, right down to the slowly dropping grey shade of despair, that will surely induce panic in the hearts of its victims in the way that only the haunting question of "oh crap, did I save?!" can. For a nice touch of style, it can even pause iTunes to really stop the show.
Watch a demo of the screensaver here in this post, or head over to YouTube for the original. Finally, you can snag your own pranktastic copy from Doomlaser.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

It is ironic that I just recently found this new beta of Missing Sync for Windows Mobile, as a BlackBerry Pearl is arriving today to replace my Samsung BlackJack, which I can no longer stand. Nevertheless, I know there are plenty of Mac users out there who are rollin' with Mark/Space's Missing Sync to get their Windows Mobile device to sync with Mac OS X, and I thought y'all might be interested in a new beta that takes Flight Mode out of the picture. Though it isn't specifically listed in the release notes for this current version (3.0.2b6 as of this writing), Windows Mobile users no longer have to shut off the phone radio (what is known as Flight Mode) to perform a sync over Bluetooth. This is great news since turning off the phone radio, as handy of a UI as it may be, is still a clunky and annoying process. Support for a few more devices has also been added, as have the typical batch of bug fixes, so check out Mark/Space's testing page for a download link and release notes with more details.
Now, where's FedEx with that Pearl...Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: OS, Software, Productivity, TUAW Tip
The Finder's Get Info window (View > Get Info or cmd-i) is one of those unsung heroes of Mac OS X computing. It houses a lot of great options, and Stationery Pad is one of them. If you have any kind of workflow where you need to repeatedly modify some sort of a file template, checking this option in any file's Get Info window will tell its parent application to open a copy of it by default, ensuring that the original file remains unedited. While some applications that manage files for you can offer similar functionality, this is a great option for anyone who, for example, use Word docs as contract templates, or begins with a basic pre-built file for various Photoshop or hand-coding CSS/PHP freelance work. You can simply build the file any way you like, save it and check this box in Get Info to tell any app you open it with to open a copy instead of the original.
Easy breezy file templates, with no AppleScripts or plugins required.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Airport, Software Update, Security
Apple has just released a new update for AirPort Extreme base stations. The update includes general fixes, security improvements and addresses compatibility for the 802.11n base station. To install this update, you'll need AirPort Utility 5.1 for Mac or Windows.
The first security concerns seem to be the AirPort's ability to allow incoming IPv6 connections, which it does by default. The new update changes those default settings to limit inbound IPv6 connections to the local network only. You can check your settings after installing the update by opening AirPort Utility, selecting an 802.11 Extreme base station, clicking Advanced -> IPv6, and making sure that Block incoming IPv6 connections is checked.
A second security issue allows file names from a password-protected AirPort Disk to be viewed by users on the local network without a password. This is patched to require validation before file names (not file contents) can be seen.

Filed under: Software, Cool tools, Hacks
We've found easy methods for hiding the icons of running apps in the Dock, but you typically have to get your hands dirty with editing files inside the app package itself. For users who prefer a more simple drag and drop operation, there's always Dock Dodger. From the same FoggyNoggin Software that brought us Desktopple Pro, Dock Dodger handles the dirty work of ensuring your app never shows its icon on your Dock; simply quit the app if it's running, drop it on Dock Dodger and restart it for the ultimate in 'what am I going to do with all this open space in my Dock?' experiences. While Dock Dodger performs the same editing of app files that you can do yourself, we'll still echo their recommendation of duplicating the original app first so you have a backup just in case.
Dock Dodger is available as donationware from FoggyNoggin Software.

There's been a lot of buzz the last few days about Drobo, the "storage robot" from Data Robotics. The best way to get a sense of what it can do is to watch this promotional video. Basically, the Drobo, which has four SATA drive bays, plugs into your Mac via USB and looks to the Mac just like a large USB mass storage device. According to our blog compadres over at Engadget (who have the full skinny), it "uses pooled virtualized storage" (not RAID) to create what looks to your Mac like a single drive, but which has data protection and redundancy features. Best of all, the hard drives are hot swappable. You can add and remove hard drives on the fly without corrupting your data either because of hard drive failure or merely to add more storage space. All of this is transparent to the host computer, which never notices anything has happened.
All of this storage robotics coolness is expensive, however. The Drobo sells for $699 without any drives. You'll need to install at least two SATA hard drives in the Drobo and it handles all the rest.

Filed under: Audio, Multimedia, Software, Podcasting
We last mentioned Übercaster several months ago, and now the German-made all-in-one podcast producing tool is finally shipping. Übercaster is designed to replace a variety of different applications, allowing you to produce, record, and edit your podcast all in one interface. You're able to set up a variety of clips (e.g. intro and exit music), clips, sound effects, etc., which you can invoke with one-click as you're talking. It even allows recording audio directly from iChat, Skype, and Gizmo Project. Once you've laid down your tracks, it allows you to edit them in a multi-track editing environment. I played with the beta while back and was impressed with the Mac-like nature of the program, though I did notice it sometimes does not gracefully handle large audio files dropped into it.
Unfortunately, all of this podcasting goodness does not come cheap. Übercaster is $79.95 and a demo is available.

Filed under: Software, Productivity, Internet Tools
The crew at Holocore have seen it fit to begin teasing users of PictureSync, a slick app for both Mac and PC that makes it easy to upload pictures and videos to various social media sites, with screenshots of a forthcoming update to version 2.0. The app has clearly taken on a very i-App UI, placing image and video sources such as iPhoto in a left sidebar, with any services you upload said media to just below that list. The scaling slider in the lower right is a very nice touch, as the current version only displays fixed thumbnails that can sometimes make it difficult to pick out images in a lineup. These new features are, of course, in addition to PictureSync's present abilities which include turning your iPhoto keywords into tags for most services (including Flickr and Vox), as well as being able to edit extensive amounts of metadata, even in batches, and grab geolocation data from Google Earth.
PictureSync at present is free when used with one online service at a time, but its real power comes from spending a mere $15 for a license which enables uploading to as many services at once as your heart desires. An alpha of this v2 update is expected to be ready for Windows by the middle of next month, with a beta shortly thereafter. The Mac version will apparently follow a little later.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Features, How-tos, Productivity, Freeware, Internet Tools
A while back we posted on a nice AppleScript and service for the online organizational service Stikkit, usable with Quicksilver. However, according to the Stikkit blog, Merlin Mann has now talked Alcor, the author of Quicksilver, into writing an official plugin for Stikkits. This plugin not only allows you to easily add new Stikkits, but even adds your Stikkits themselves to your Quicksilver Catalog. So you can search and edit your Stikkits, right within Quicksilver. Unfortunately, like many things related to Quicksilver it's not immediately obvious how to get this set up, so I'll walk you through it briefly.Continue reading How To: Stikkit Plugin for Quicksilver

Filed under: Cult of Mac, Odds and ends, Apple TV
Apple has posted the new Apple TV ad to their website. Eagle-eyed TUAW reader Klemens noticed that the Apple TV in the commercial that first aired yesterday had only a power-cord and no connections to a TV. Here are a few other things you may (or may not) have noticed:Apple Remote on the coffee table. At 23 seconds in, you see an Apple Remote sitting next to the TV remote on what has to be the cleanest coffee table in the Mac-owning universe.
Triplets. The guy in front of the monitor is the same guy with the iPod in the hallway is the same guy watching TV in the den. The guy is somewhere in the male 17-45 demo, but we don't see his face. There's both a guitar and a kid's toy in the office.
Ikea sensibilities. Shiny. White. Uncluttered. And, really, who wouldn't put out orchids like that on the kitchen table? Beautiful house, isn't it? ChrisM70 thinks it looks a little familiar, but I think it's just uses a similar style.

Filed under: Multimedia, Video, Apple TV
Dave Zatz, an employee at Sling Media, is confirming reports that they're busily bringing compatibility with the Apple TV to their cool Slingbox placeshifting device. The Slingbox connects to your home AV sources (cablebox, Tivo, DVD player, etc.) and your router, and allows you (via the SlingPlayer client) to watch that video stream anywhere in the world over the internet. It even includes an IR blaster that lets you control your source as if you were in your living room with your standard remote (which appears on your screen, like the Apple Remote to the right). Now the Slingbox Pro will apparently connect to your Apple TV (via the component outputs) giving you access across the internets, not only to your video, but to your entire iTunes library (via audio only mode) on your Mac, PC, Palm or Windows Mobile device. Nifty!
