- Flickr Find: First iPhone Pics?
Over the weekend all the buzz was about whether someone had posted pics snapped with an iPhone up to Flickr. The EXIF information suggested that the shots were "taken with an Apple iPhone". Mobile Guerilla did a little investigating, found that the person who uploaded the pics (now taken down from Flickr) was indeed an Apple employee and that the pic of this gentleman was shot in Cupertino, CA--not too far from Apple HQ.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Odds and ends, Steve Jobs
Last week, the California Supreme Court refused to hear Steve Jobs' request to demolish his house. The Jackling house is a large Spanish Colonial revival mansion built in 1926. A group of preservationists called "Uphold Our Heritage" want to prevent Jobs from tearing it down. They have established a website at friendsofthejacklinghouse.org.Jobs received a demolition permit in 2004--under the condition that Jobs offers to give away the house itself so that it can be relocated to another site, according to this Mac Daily News article. Jobs calls the house an "architectural abomination" according to that article.

Filed under: iPod Family, Blast From the Past
October 2001. Apple introduces a new portable music player that it declares is much easier to use. So much easier, in fact, that it may "broaden a nascent market in the way the Macintosh once helped make the personal computer accessible to a more general audience". This new device is called iPod.The New York Times article that describes the iPod is pessimistic. The iPod-buying market would probably be limited to the 7 million existing owners of Apple Macintosh computers since no Windows support was provided at the time. And the new iPod might support piracy, although CEO Steve Jobs assured the music industry that steps would be taken to prevent songs from being transfered from the device to other computers.
The 2001 iPod's 5GB hard drive was large enough to store 1000 songs.

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, OS, Software, Internet Tools, Leopard
It's things like the iChat Theater page at Apple's Developer site that make me just fine with the delay of Mac OS X Leopard. They say 'good things come to those who wait,' but from what I'm reading at the iChat Theater page, that phrase is more like 'fantastic, amazing and mind-blowing things come to those who wait' when applied to the new technologies coming in Leopard. While most of that page is geared towards developers, offering things like code snippets to get them excited and motivated to build their apps to work with Leopard's iChat, the first two paragraphs are enough for 'the rest of us' to get a mouth-watering glimpse of just how much the new iChat could change the way we work and play once Leopard does arrive.
In short, iChat Theater is a new feature that will allow the broadcast of, and collaboration on, just about anything we do on our Mac. Of course, a developer will have to design their app specifically to incorporate these new features (hint: submitting feedback and feature requests is a good thing), but just consider the possibilities: instead of having to jam pack all your tech support calls into that once-or-twice-a-year family holiday trip, you can fire up Leopard's iChat and show mom and dad how to make a slideshow in iPhoto over the web, with both video and audio of yourself and iPhoto. Now expand a little: is your job on the verge of granting you telecommuting privileges? Or perhaps you're a teacher or a technology scout for an educational organization? This new Leopard feature opens doors much larger than the one for mom and pop; with iChat Theater, teachers and businessmen alike will be able to work their magic in entirely new ways, and not just with the tools Apple provides. The beauty of iChat Theater is that it's an open platform, so to speak; want to brainstorm in OmniGraffle with a colleague on the opposite side of the country? Need to teach a last-minute digital art class in Lineform for a friend halfway across the world? No sweat. Although I have no idea whether The Omni Group or Freeverse have already hopped on the iChat Theater bandwagon, plenty of comments and requests from their users could probably ensure they do.
iChat Theater is gonna be a big'un boys and girls, and I already have a couple handfuls of reasons as to why I can wait for Apple to take their time and (hopefully) get it right.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

IT News Online tells us that Samsung has begun mass producing 16 Gigabit NAND flash chips. "In rolling out the densest NAND flash in the world, we are throwing open the gates to a much wider playing field for flash-driven consumer electronics," IT News quoted Jim Elliott, director of flash marketing. As you probably know, high density data storage is a prime ingredient of flash-based music players like the iPod Shuffle and Nano lines, and smart phones like the iPhone (as well as digital cameras, handheld computers and memory cards). Denser storage means more capacity for these consumer electronics.
I'm guessing that 16 Gb chips probably will not debut in Apple products until the end of this year or the beginning of the next. If I have my facts straight, the iPhone uses 4 Gigabit chips in its design.

Filed under: OS, Software, Tips and tricks, Mods
Steven Frank has been blogging a number of Coda-related tips since Panic released this ground-breaking app last week. Fortunately for the non-code ninjas in the crowd, Steven's tips haven't been all PHP and CSS-obsessed, however, as he just released this handy gem that I've never seen before. Apparently, in most Mac OS X apps (probably the Cocoa-based ones, so Firefox is out), you can cmd-click the 'standard toolbar widget' in the upper right of the window (the one that looks like a throat lozenge) to cycle through all the different states of toolbar buttons. Large icons + text, small icons with no text and even two different sizes of text-only buttons are all readily available for you to customize in most apps.
This is a handy tip especially for me since I *hate* how large Apple made the default icon size in the toolbar, and I previously was right-clicking and chosing 'Use Small Icons' in every single one of my apps. Until a developer comes to my rescue with some sort of AppleScript that can set the default icon size in every app to what I believe it should be, this tip is the next best thing. Thanks Steven!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: OS, Software, Productivity, Mods
Erica just touched on Mac OS X's ability to selectively hide drives form the desktop via the Finder's preferences, but what if you still want access to those drives? Maybe you're a neat freak when it comes to your desktop, or maybe you're a recent Windows switcher who misses the comforts of My Computer. Either way, an app simply called My Computer might very well do the trick for you, as it really lives up to its name. Included with the app are some brief instructions that basically parallel Erica's post, teaching you how to use the Finder's preferences to remove your drives from the desktop. After that you can simply move My Computer.app into place (which really doesn't do much more than using cmd-shift-c to get to the same display of drives) and enjoy your home away from home, or simply what some might consider a cleaner desktop. While the choice for the app icon is a bit outdated, that can be rectified with a simple Get Info command (cmd-i) on the icon and choosing something new, perhaps from the endless archives at The Iconfactory.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Hardware, OS, Software, Features, Leopard, TUAW Interview, Developer, iPhone, Apple TV
The interview train just keeps on chuggin', and this time we have Gus Mueller of Flying Meat Software, developer of VoodooPad, FlySketch and FlyGesture, on board. Just like the other interviews I've done with Brent Simmons, Wil Shipley and Paul Kafasis, Gus had some great thoughts to share on the Leopard delay, whether to develop software for one specific OS, words of wisdom from a Nintendo game developer and how Apple's past behavior can hint at the possibility of the iPhone opening up up to 3rd parties sometime in the future. Amazing fact from this particular interview: Gus's mobile phone just turned 7.
