  • Ukelele: visual keyboard layout editor

One of the things I like about working on our Ask TUAW series is that researching answers to readers' questions leads me to interesting software I would not otherwise likely find. This week's Ask TUAW is a case in point, when somebody asked about remapping keyboard keys, it lead me to Ukelele, a cool visual keyboard layout editor. Ukelele presents you with a keyboard (above) and allows you to create custom key mappings simply by double-clicking on the visual representation of the key or even just dragging and dropping a character from the Character Palette onto the visual keyboard. Once the key layout is created you'll just need to select it from the Input Menu tab of the International Preference Pane (you can also activate a menubar icon to make it even easier to select between different keyboard layouts). So if you've ever wanted to remap a large number of your keys for some specialized purpose (e.g. a foreign language or even a programming language), then Ukelele will make it relatively easy.

Ukelele is a free download from NRSI.

  • TrainPlayer

TrainPlayer is a model train layout and modeling tool for people who are really into model trains. You can download (i.e. purchase) a variety of track layouts, or even design your own with the accompanying TrackLayer, and then run your trains. The graphics are relatively simple; it's not really a game but rather a design tool "for the evolving railroader -- one who stares at track plans and dreams of an empty basement."

There are several editions of TrainPlayer for Mac from $29.95 to 79.95 and a demo is avaiable.

  • Mac 101: Preview Media with Column View

Finder's column view doesn't seem to be a big favorite among switchers, which is a shame. Switchers tend to prefer using icon views or lists but column view offers a huge win over these other when working with media, allowing you to preview your media directly in Finder. To switch to column view, choose View -> as Columns or just press Command-3. Finder changes over to this view which shows a tree-like structure of your disk.

Not only do you see the contents of your current folder, but you can see other folders higher up the directory tree. And here's the good part: when you select an image, audio or video file, you can preview its contents directly in the Finder window. Select any media file and Finder shows you its name, kind, size and other file information. It shows you the contents of the file as well.

If it's a picture, you see a small version of the image. If it's sound or video, a QuickTime-style player appears and you can play it back directly in Finder. Got a lot of pictures or other media to sort through? Use the up and down arrow keys to scroll through your files. Finder will update the preview to reflect your current selection until you find the file you were looking for.

  • Gruber interviews CanSecWest winner

    Filed under:

Over at Daring Fireball John Gruber interviews Dino Dai Zovi, who won the CanSecWest security contest we mentioned last week by successfully exploiting a MacBook Pro through a flaw in QuickTime's implementation of Java. Dai Zovi explains the sort of thing he did (though obviously without giving details). He is a Mac user himself and confirms what we noted before that you can defend yourself by disabling Java in your browsers. Dai Zovi's main advice for the "typical" user is merely to run in a non-admin account. It's definitely worth a read for anybody curious about the exploit.

  • TUAW Tip: Bring favicons to Firefox's bookmarks bar

For a number of reasons, I always keep coming back to settling for (read: compromising on) using Firefox as my main browser. For those who are curious as to why, I offer two reasons to keep things short for now: 1) Many of the Greasemonkey scripts for Gmail that Lifehacker included in their Better Gmail add-on enhance Google's web client beyond my wildest productive dreams, and 2) Blogging add-ons from the likes of Clipmarks and ScribeFire do wonders for my workflow.

Nevertheless, one of the things that's always irked me about the Mac version of Firefox is its lack of favicons in the bookmarks bar right out of the box. Pouring salt on the wound, no amount of research through Firefox's help files, Mozilla's forums or even Firefox's own config file (accessible by typing about:config in the address bar) yielded any kind of explanation or workaround. But thankfully, I finally found a solution, so if you're in this same bucket and you want favicons in your Firefox bookmarks bar, listen up: it's all (apparently) about the theme. I don't know how or what exactly these theme authors are doing, but installing some of the themes available from Mozilla's add-ons site will bring favicons to Firefox's toolbar once you enable the theme and restart the browser. I first tried the Blue Ice theme which worked just fine, but finally settled on Mac Favicon which simply edits the default theme to enable the tiny but handy icons. I'm sure more of the themes at Mozilla's site will do the trick, and I would bet that checking their preview screenshots to see if favicons are indeed visible should save you some time when searching for the right solution.

I would imagine Mozilla turned off favicons by default to make the browser look and feel a little more like Safari, but they could have made our lives easier by simply offering a menu item, possibly under View. Ultimately, an add-on like the ones I've mentioned are a decent enough solution for now, but I recommend you submit this as feedback to the Firefox team if you've been jonesing for favicons as bad as I have.
