  • Widget Watch: iStat Pro 4, iStat nano 2

The crew over at iSlayer have been busy releasing major updates to their killer system monitoring widgets, and not a moment too late for this year's Apple Design Awards (entry deadline is April 23rd). Earlier this month we missed a major upgrade and UI overhaul to iStat nano, bringing the compact system monitoring widget to v2 and adding a ton of new features.

With the release of what almost looks like an all-new version of iStat pro v4, however, iSlayer has brought a consistent, uniform UI to both widgets. While I agree that you should probably sit down and take a deep breath before reading through the extensive list of changes, the big-hitters include: support for the battery meters in bluetooth keyboards and mice, instant update for things like network changes and disk mounting, a choice between memory and CPU usage in the process panel, as well as drag and drop re-ordering of sections inside the widget, allowing you to customize the layout to your heart's content.

That isn't all though - go check out the huge list of changes for either of these widgets and consider showing iSlayer some donation love for all the stellar work they've done on two of the inarguable kings of system monitoring widgets for Mac OS X.

  • Return of the pineapple: HandBrake 0.8.5b1

First there was HandBrake, then MediaFork... and now, well, just don't call it a comeback: HandBrake 0.8.5b1 is out, incorporating all the library updates from the MediaFork build of the free, open source DVD converter/compressor and adding some new goodies:

    o. User presets
    o. AppleTV and PS3 support
    o. Anamorphic video, even in QuickTime
    o. Surround sound (both AAC 5.1 and Dolby Pro Logic II)
    o. Chapter markers (QuickTime-style)
    o. Official support for the Windows GUI
    o. PPC Linux support
    o. High profile H.264

What better way to spend a weekend than converting all your DVDs to show on your AppleTV? Just note that this is a beta version, and the last stable rev of HandBrake (0.7.1) may be more reliable.

  • Sleep Display, put your monitor to sleep instantly

Sleep Display does one simple thing: run it and it puts your display immediately to sleep, no fuss, no muss. Of course you could turn manually down the backlight, go to the Energy Saver Preference Pane, or even put the entire computer to sleep, but Sleep Display shortcuts all of this: run the application and the display goes dark. Hit a key or move the mouse and the display wakes up. It's perfect for use with Quicksilver. This is a great boon to portable users especially, since the display tends to be the biggest drain on the battery (and running it doesn't affect your normal Energy Saver settings).

On my iMac I've had some problems with automatic display sleeping (i.e. it often simply doesn't work), but this little application does the trick just fine. Another great thing about Sleep Display is that when you run it, it sleeps the display and then quits, so it's not running all the time. I think the icon (right) could use a little work, but since I hardly ever see it, I don't think that's a big deal.

There's also a Dashboard widget version if you swing that way. Sleep display is a free download for either the application or the widget version.
