- Mac 101: Changing the size of your icons
Finder's View Options allow you to control the way your icons look on your desktop and in your folders. You can zoom your icons all the way up to a hefty 128x128 (shown here) or shrink them down to a modest 16x16. There are tradeoffs of course. Smaller icons let you see more files at once while large icons better allow you to preview your files, especially pictures. You can easily experiment with changing your icon sizes as follows.

If you're planning a trip and are looking for some inexpensive spoken books, iTunes put up a special 25 books for under $5 page that you might want to check out. These audio books include material ranging from Steven King and Jerry Seinfeld to Elie Wiesel and Ann Coulter. Be aware that most of these selections are abridged or based around short material, so there's generally a good reason they don't cost as much as most full-length audio books. The cheapest item, Harry G. I recently posted about accessing the calendars in your /usr/share/calendar directory. Jewish readers may have noted that the default calendar.judaic file is sadly out of date. The Jewish year does not line up exactly with the standard Christian calendar. Josef Grosch maintains an up-to-date version of calendar.judaic that you can download at his ftp site. Download a copy, uncompress it (we recommend using the Unarchiver) and replace the standard 2002 version with the latest 2007 (11 Tevet 5767 - 22 Tevet 5768) release to bring your calendar file up to date. April 16 2007 will go from being the 19th day of the Omer (using the 2002 dates) to the 13th (with the 2007 dates).

It's spring time here in the US, and that means voting for The 2006 Engadget Awards has begun. The nominees this year are: The Nintendo Wii, Dell 3007WFP-HC, HTC Hermes / 8525, SanDisk Sansa E280R, Slingbox PRO Sony's PS3 and last but certainly not least, the MacBook Pro!
As of this writing, the MBP is in a distant 2nd behind the Wii (the MBP has a little over 18% of the vote, while the Wii is pulling in 56%). Sure, the Wii is cool, but we need to show the MBP some love!

April, 1993. Unix World asks: "Does Steve Jobs have a future in software?" 14 years later, as OS X prepares to enter 10.5, we can answer "yes". TUAW reader Bill B. found a copy of this old issue of Unix World lying around his office and scanned it. - iTunes: Free Monday
Three new free videos popped up over the weekend while I was away in Nebraska. Those of you with US iTunes accounts can download the premiere episode of Shear Genius (which is, sadly, not nearly as good as Project Runway), a special mythology roundup for Stargate SG-1 and the Brandi Carlile Grey's Anatomy video. In other news, I've been hoping for Showtime's "Dexter" and "Tudors" series to show up on iTunes. No luck so far but I did run across both a free Dexter podcast and a free but macabre Dexter video collection. These look pretty spoiler-y so you might only want to download these materials if you've already had the opportunity to watch the show when it first aired.

You may have noticed that Apple doesn't want you taking screenshots of DVD movies you're watching with their DVD Player software. If you try one of the usual keyboard shortcuts while a DVD is playing, you'll get a message that says something along the lines of, "Nice try, Bub."
If you still insist on getting that screen grab, check out DVD Snap. It will let you grab a full screen capture, a smaller window-sized screenshot and even set up sequential captures (every 6 seconds, for example). Pretty useful if you wanted to set up a slideshow.
DVD Snap is universal and requires Mac OS 10.4 or later. A single license will cost you $19.95US. Of course, Snapz Pro does this (and a lot more) for only slightly more money, so shop around.
