- Gruber begins dissection of Google Desktop
Filed under: Software, Security
In our sneak peak at the new Google Desktop for Mac, Scott wondered at Google's use of a proprietary installer. Like many Mac users, I get annoyed at installers, though I understand that sometimes they are necessary. Similarly concerned, John Gruber at Daring Fireball performed a test install and then did a file level comparison of his system before and after. As Gruber notes: "This matters with Google Desktop, because there are a lot of files, and they're installed into some interesting - if not suspicious - locations." This includes an Input Manager and some possibly questionable kernel extensions (which are likely necessary to make the full system-wide search possible). I should be clear: nobody is accusing Google of doing anything underhanded, but if you like to know exactly what's going on with your system, John's article is worth a read before installing Google Desktop.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Jason Snell, Macworld Editorial Director, has spent the last week with an Apple TV and shares with us his thoughts. Why am I linking to yet another Apple TV review, you wonder? You see, Jason previously had a Mac mini hooked up to his HDTV, so he compares that experience with that offered by Apple's latest electronic gizmo. Which one wins? The Apple TV wins for a number of reasons, though the key point seems to be: the Apple TV was designed to work with a TV, the Mac mini not so much.
Anyone out there replace their TV bound Mac mini with an Apple TV? How is it working out?Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Your Dock connector equipped iPod is probably one of your prized possessions. You don't want it to get all scratched up when you toss it in your bag, but who wants the hassle of taking it out of its case when you want to play your sweet jams via an iPod Hi-Fi? That's where the SendStation Dock Extender comes in.
This little doohickey clicks onto your iPod's Dock Connector with a plug that has the same proportions as Apple's Dock cable. It extends the Dock connector so you can plug your iPod into any Dock Connector ready accessory without having to take it out of its case.
The Dock Extender ships tomorrow for $28.95, which seems a little steep for me.
Thanks, Justin.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
