- Apple under European antitrust scrutiny
Filed under: Apple Corporate, iTS, Bad Apple
The AP reports that the European Commission has launched an antitrust probe into iTunes. According to the article a single track costs $1.56 in the UK, $1.44 in Denmark and $1.32 in Germany and Belgium, while at the same time users are restricted to the iTunes store of their country of origin. "Consumers are thus restricted in their choice of where to buy music and consequently what music is available, and at what price," the commission said in its statement. Apple's spokesman said it was prevented from creating a single European store by its contracts with music labels and publishers and the rights they negotiated with them. This investigation is apparently separate from the whole ongoing Apple/DRM fooferaw.

Welcome to this week's edition of iTunes: Free Tuesday. This Tuesday brings a great new selection of music, audio books, and video for our US readers and exciting new singles for our International readers. Don't forget to follow the jump to see all the free items listed for today.
US Music
US: Beautiful Disaster by Jon McLaughlin
Not to be confused with famed fusion guitarist John McLaughlin, this Jon McLaughlin is a young singer/piano player from Indiana. His major label debut is set to come out in early spring and "Beautiful Disaster" is the first taste of what's likely to be a successful pop career. Intertwining bold, dramatic strings around his own fluid piano work and a steady rock backbeat, this is our free Single of the Week.US: Cosculluela, Eddie Dee, Tego Calderon & Zion by Easy
Here's a collective effort from some of the biggest names in reggaeton - including Zion, Tego Calderón, Eddie Dee, and Cosculluela. Verses and vocalists interchange smoothly here while the rhythm is kept with some thick synthesizer pulses and streamlined bass kicks. The gunshots ring out to remind you that these guys mean business. Another solid cut from Machete Music.More after the jump...

When we last looked at Macgourmet, they were wrapping up the beta phase of version 2. Today, the beta phase is over and version 2.1 has been released.
If you're unfamiliar, Macgourmet is kind of like "iTunes for your recipes." You can store recipes, sure, but Macgourmet also lets you publish to your iDisk - or other WebDav server - for sharing with pals, generate shopping lists based on what you want to make, create relationships between dishes and wines and a lot more. Changes in version 2.1 include:
- Improved recipe export (including iPod)
- Import improved to include 3rd party formats
- Improved method of grabbing recipes from the web
- Multiple recipe libraries

Last month, we pointed out Tipkalc, the iPod "widget" from Koloroo that lets you calculate your tip and split your bill while at a restaurant.
Now, the folks at Koloroo have released a second iPod widget, Kolorwheel. Once loaded, you select a "base" color with the iPod's scroll wheel and Kolorwheel suggests a compatible scheme of four colors.
It's neat, though I imagine a professional would have a more elaborate solution as his or her disposal. Kolorwheel is currently available for an introductory price of $7.99US.

BurnAgain DVD by freeridecoding is the killer media-burning software that we just love (we last looked at BurnAgain in July). It allows for multi-session burning, and is even smart enough to update changes to previously burned files. For example, if your second burn contains some files from the first, BurnAgain will add only the new or changed files. Pretty sweet.
It produces cross-platform results and doesn't create multiple volumes. Changes in version 1.1 include:
- German localization
- UI changes
- Bug fixes and enhancements

So let's say you've got an iPod with a dead hard drive. You could install a replacement hard drive,* sure, but the fun would be converting it to Compact Flash. However, you aren't up to hacking together your own solution, no matter how detailed the instructions are. This post is for you.
Mark at GeekTechnique.org has created an adapter that will allow you to put a Compact Flash card - up to 128GB - into a 1st, 2nd, 3rd or fourth generation iPod, and he's selling them from his site. Of course, his solution eliminates the hard drive, which improves battery life. He doesn't mention how much he wants for one, so you'll have to send him an email. Still, it could be a fun weekend project.

Filed under: iTS, iTunes, Surveys and Polls
Now that Apple and EMI have announced the pending availability of DRM-free music, we're wondering if you're going to upgrade your music. When the new downloads become available in iTunes this May, you'll be able to "upgrade" the EMI music you already own by spending an extra $0.30US per track.
Yesterday, our own Erica pointed out just what you get for your thirty cents, and with that in mind, we ask: "Will you upgrade your iTunes music?" Leave your answer below and check back tomorrow for the results.

Filed under: Wireless, Cool tools, TUAW Tip
Ah, the open road. What's more American than being mobile, drifting along the highways and byways, traveling hither and yon, free as a debt-laden bird? While I try to rein in that derailed train of road metaphor, let's consider the options for Mac users and wireless data. Many of you would love to take your Internet access with you as you travel on family vacation or spring break; for others, terrestrial broadband (cable modem or DSL) is unavailable or prohibitively expensive at your fixed location. Good news for all: the choices on the wireless access front are better than ever before. We'll cover the US domestic options today, and hopefully get to Europe/UK and other international options sometime soon.

Filed under: Software, Freeware, Internet Tools
As its name suggests, FacebookSync is a tiny freeware app from FSB Software that - wait for it - syncs your friends' info from Facebook to Mac OS X's Address Book. Upon running it, a window much like the one you see above will appear for every contact that either doesn't have an Address Book entry at all, or is missing information that could be pulled down from Facebook. It can even pull down images in case your Address Book contacts don't have those either, which is handy since apps like Mail, iChat, Growl + Gmail and Adium can use these pics to help identify these contacts.
Whilst trying this out, FacebookSync seems to work pretty well, though I admittedly don't spend much time on it and I only have a dozen or so friends. Still, it added the information I told it to (and for the record, I'm on 10.4.9 and have over 450 contacts in Address Book already), so I'll give it two thumbs up. Before running FacebookSync, however, I highly recommend you chose File > Backup Address Book in Address Book to create a clean, recent copy in case things go south. FacebookSync isn't likely to eat your cat or cause your Apple TV to implode, but having a Plan B is an absolute must when playing with software like this.

Filed under: Software, Universal Binary, Beta Beat
Mailsmith is an old-school, text-only email client from Bare Bones (of BBEdit and Yojimbo fame), that has long had a cadre of devoted users, but which has also really been showing its age of late (version 2.1.5 was released in March 2005). Yesterday, however, Bare Bones' Rich Siegel announced a public beta of Mailsmith 2.2 that brings the application into the Intel age as well as adding a variety of other changes, including substantial changes to disk storage formats which preclude downgrading back to 2.1. Siegel emphasizes that 2.2 is not yet for sale and is completely unsupported, but if you're an old Mailsmith user who moved away in the Intel age you may want to check out the announcement.
