  • TimeDrawer: document versioning before Leopard

    Filed under:

TimeDrawer looks like a very interesting document versioning utility that gives you a preview of Leopard's forthcoming Time Machine functionality. It installs as a system preference and "stores your files everytime you update them." It allows you to go back and visually ascertain the differences in previous versions with an Expose-like modal interface (though obviously a far cry from Time Machine's groovy out-of-this-world thing). You activate the interface with a contextual menu, so you can see changes in files on your desktop or within a given folder, etc.

There have been some previous document versioning applications like Versomatic, but TimeDrawer's interface looks very slick. On the other hand, it's hard to imagine TimeDrawer will last long once Leopard is released (except maybe for those who stick with Tiger, which it requires). On the positive side, TimeDrawer does not require an external drive like Time Machine.

TimeDrawer is now in beta and is a free download from ONERIVER software

  • Webjimbo 1.0 released

We last mentioned Webjimbo when it was in closed beta. Now the clever application that allows you to access your Yojimbo notes over the internet by turning your Mac into a mini web-server has been released. Your notes appear in any web browser in an interface that looks very much like Yojimbo on the desktop. Version 1.0 adds support for passwords and viewing encrypted notes, which was missing in the beta. Also tantalizing is the promise of a future iPhone optimized version ("stay tuned"), which should help make up for the deficiencies of the woeful included Notes application.

The same warnings apply as before. You're only able to edit in plaintext and there are security considerations any time you run your Mac as a server. Nonetheless, if you want access to your Yojimbo notes on the go, Webjimbo could be just the ticket.

Webjimbo is $29.95 and a demo is available.

  • Mac 101: Hovering to copy

    Filed under:

Many new Mac users think that in order to drag a file into a folder, that it must already be open on your screen. In fact, OS X offers a lovely trick that allows you to navigate through folders as you perform your drag and drop. To make this happen, start dragging the file you want to relocate. When you reach the parent folder of the folder you want to relocate to, hover for a few seconds. Finder recognizes that you're hovering and opens that folder for you. You can then locate the next folder down in the path, hover there, and so on until your reach your destination.

This is particularly useful when dragging items onto other desks, especially networked disks. You can drag and hover items onto disks in Finder window's source pane as well to move files between computers.

And what do you do if the item you want to drag onto is off screen? Drag in the direction you need to go. Finder is smart enough to help scroll the window for you.

  • TUAW Tip: Speed up Sheet animation

I was reading this article from MacDevCenter on how productivity maven Mark Hurst sets up a new "Good Easy Mac" for his own maximally productive use. He's got a number of interesting choices (check them out for yourself), but one of the coolest tips was a link to a MacOSXhints hint that describes how to speed up your sheet dialog boxes. These are the boxes that appear when you open, save, or print and by default OS X animates them so that they drop down and expand. Well if you open a lot of these sheets like I do, this can get annoying after a while, especially if you use Default Folder X, which adds its own delay. Anyway, a simple terminal command can radically speed up the appearance of these sheets, which over the course of a day can really cut down on the annoyance factor. All you have to do is open the terminal and type:

    defaults write NSGlobalDomain NSWindowResizeTime .001

If you want to restore the default behavior just replace the '.001' with '.2' Anyway, try it, I bet you'll like it.

  • Hack Alert: ssh from iPhone

This morning, reigning iPhone hack-king NerveGas compiled and installed sshd2 and ssh on his iPhone. So what does this mean? It shows that the first steps have been taken towards allowing the iPhone to natively ssh out. For all of you who are inclined to say "Oh ssh, my Nokia can do that... pffft", remember we're still in iPhone's early days. And, no, there isn't a GUI version yet. If you need ssh on your iPhone right now, you'll need to use a Web-based solution. Want to learn more? Head over to #iphone-shell at irc.osx86.hu.

Thanks to the whole iphone-shell gang.

  • AT&T refunding iPhone activation charges for customers who experienced limbo?

    Filed under:

If you were one of the unfortunate souls caught up in the AT&T activation limbo, some readers are reporting that you might be able to reclaim at least a few bucks for your pain and suffering. As the story goes, AT&T is apparently refunding the $36 activation fee to those who call and present their story of iPhone despair. Of course, it would probably help if you're cordial while explaining instead of reliving the memory entirely, but a refund of such a comparatively small amount of money doesn't sound like too much skin off AT&T's back to make up for doing such a dreadful job handling the iPhone Weekend.

If you try this, let us know what your experience is like. There are no guarantees here, and I was fortunate to get activated right away so I don't have any personal gripes. Good luck with those calls.

  • Apple form factor evolution

Donationware app MacTracker is great for those times when you need to look back at the history of Apple's products or the stats of one particular machine. If you're interested in more of a visual history, however, this picture from art director and designer Edwin Tofslie should satisfy your cravings for pretty pictures. Tofslie collected images from most of the major design revisions Apple has made to many of their most significant products, including the Mac, Newton, iPod, Xserve and iPhone, as well as their displays, mice and even the AirPort Extreme stations. It's an interesting look back over the evolution of Apple's industrial design that seems to include all the major landmarks.

  • iPhone 101: Take decent photos

There's one aspect of the iPhone that's counter-intuitive - the camera.

Unlike nearly every camera ever made, the iPhone takes a picture when the "shutter button" is released, not pressed.*

I've gotten some nice snapshots, but only after I figured out my current process:
    1. Press and hold the shutter button
    2. Compose the shot
    3. Release the button
    Now, isn't that better?

*Yes, many digital cameras feature a "two-stage" process (half a press to focus, full to capture the image), but most take the photo upon a full press, not release, of the shutter button.
