- Double the Activations, Double the Fun! An iPhone Cautionary Tale
This post is one of those "don't let this happen to you" cautionary tales so please, bear with me as I don't want this to, in fact, happen to you. Or, if it does, I want you to be prepared and know what do do to rectify the situation. Don't worry, it's nothing earth-shattering or extremely dangerous, just a bit of information to help you keep pace with and sometimes pass up "the man" when he tries, intentionally or not, to keep you down.
As some of you may remember, I'm one of the people who first activated an iPhone with a number provided by AT&T during the activation process. My intention at the time was to try out the device and see if I really liked it before fully committing and porting my number over to AT&T from T-Mobile. Well, that test period didn't last very long as I pretty much fell in love with the iPhone (in spite of its issues -- hey, nothing's perfect, right?). So, about a week or so into the testing phase, I opted to go through the porting process.Continue reading Double the Activations, Double the Fun! An iPhone Cautionary Tale

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Multimedia, Tips and tricks, iTunes, Open Source
I haven't gotten into social music database Last.fm much, mostly (I'm ashamed to say) because I'm worried about some of my musical guilty pleasures being browsable by the Internet audience at large. Also, because I listen to my music in all kinds of ways, not just simply through iTunes.
One of those ways, of course, is my iPod, and if you've been trying to figure out how to get your iTunes listens scrobbled into Last.fm, worry no more: Scrobblepod is here to save the day. It's a go-between for iTunes and Last.fm, and allows you to sync your iPod listens up with Last.fm before your iTunes listens get entered, ensuring everything gets listed just fine. Now, people will be able to see that you've listened to Mamma Mia whether it's on your iPod or your iTunes install.
Of course, I still haven't seen a way to track the other way I listen to my music-- I keep all my actual music files on my Powerbook, and share them directly to my desktop through iTunes. That way, I have access to my music no matter where I take my laptop. Unfortunately, neither iTunes or Last.fm treats listens through shared libraries as if they were "real" plays, so no matter how many times I listen to that Timberlake Justice remix, it'll never show up on my "Recently Played" list, or in Last.fm.
But anyway, my problems are complicated. If all you want to do is track your iPod listens into Last.fm, Scrobblepod's got you covered.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Back in March, TUAW operative Kelly made us aware of what would become Kentucky's very first Apple Store. While browsing Apple's jobs boards, she found several postings for retail positions at Louisville's Oxmoor mall.
Today, reader Chris sent in this spy shot of the subtle barricade that's in front of the store. No hints there.
We still don't have any information on when this store may open, but we'll let you know as soon as we find out. Get ready, Louisville, you're closer every day!
Thanks, Chris!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Multimedia, Odds and ends, Freeware, Open Source
So this past weekend I realized that I still had the great Skyrocket screensaver on my Powerbook from the Fourth of July-- no, not this year's. Last year's. It was time to get a new screensaver.
Fortunately, FreeMacWare was featuring Chemicalburn, a screensaver by Michael Ash (who also created GPULife, a Game of Life screensaver) that not only looks cool, but actually simulates a transportation network. Nodes get created randomly, and little colored packages fly around between them, as frequently used routes get stronger and stronger. When a route is destroyed, the network eventually fixes itself, by creating more routes and nodes. Not only is it aesthetically cool, but it's a great thought experiment, and it's fun to watch a little network get created and destroyed when your own work goes idle for a bit.
Chemicalburn is open source and free. You can get it on Ash's website.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Internet Tools, Security, iPhone
SPI Labs is claiming to have discovered a fairly significant threat to iPhone security due to MobileSafari's ability to dial phone numbers found on web pages. The feature can apparently be exploited in various ways, such as redirecting the actual call to a number other than what is viewed on the webpage, tracking calls placed by a site visitor, bypassing the confirmation dialog and forcing the call to continue and even preventing the phone from dialing calls altogether. Imagine clicking on a local number for a restaurant on a malicious website, only to discover you're actually calling an international number and, perhaps more importantly, paying international calling rates.
While SPI Labs has rightly chosen not to disclose the actual nature of the exploit and how to perform it, they do state that they have alerted Apple and are cooperating to plug these holes. If these security threats worry you, SPI Labs recommends that users simply don't use this feature for now. Ultimately, it is probably a safe bet that Apple is working quickly to plug security issues like this and other bugs for a future software update that will be delivered (hopefully) soon.

Filed under: Hardware, Retail, Apple, iPhone
This wasn't on the iPhone Bingo card, but it should have been. Where there's an extremely coveted gadget, there'll be an extremely expensive luxury case for it. Louis Vuitton has announced a set of four cases for the iPhone: Monogram Canvas, Taiga Leather, Epi Leather and Alligator Skin. The Taiga Leather one has a belt attachment on it, but all of the cases are pretty inconvenient, because you've got to pull the iPhone all the way out to actually use it.
Oh, and we've saved the best for last. Want to guess prices? The Monogram Canvas case will only set you back a measly $225, while the Alligator Skin case is twice the price of the actual iPhone: $1120. All the cases will be available tomorrow at Louis Vuitton's Fifth Avenue store in Manhattan.

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Humor, Odds and ends
I'll admit to being one of those people who sits at the coffee house with a double espresso and a laptop. What's the point of buying cool hardware if you aren't going to be seen with it, right?
It would seem that I'm not alone. Alexander at The Macintosh Journal also spends time with the urban hipsters, and he's even developed a theory: Most laptop-wielding coffee house patrons use Macs. He recently conducted an informal poll at CoffeeGeek which confirmed his suspicions.
When I think of it, I'd say Macs to non-Macs (Windows or Linux) at my local coffee joint is about 50/50. In fact, I've used my Ubuntu Compaq nearly as often as my MacBook Pro (I didn't spend all that time precisely putting stickers on the lid for nothing).
So, TUAW'ers, what's your experience? Macs at the coffee house or no?Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Multimedia, Rumors, iTunes, Steve Jobs, Apple
Rumors have been bouncing around all weekend about Steve Jobs' next big project-- no, it's not the iPhone Nano, or the long awaited iTablet. According to Moli.com (yeah, we've never heard of them either), it's a record company. Supposedly Jay-Z and Beyonce are going to Apple to start a recording division. Just imagine HOVA in this picture wearing blue jeans with his black shirt tucked in.
Frankly, farfetched is too nice of a word to describe this rumor, but the idea of an iRecords isn't that new or ludicrous. Obviously, SJ's got issues with the folks standing between him and musicians, and putting musicians under his own wing would allow him to digitally distribute their music DRM-free, and collect all the profits for himself. There's blood in the water around the recording industry, and the time is ripe for someone to jump in and take over.
Of course, this is Apple, so there's more to the story than that-- their first battle would be convincing Apple Records to come to some kind of agreement. Then there's the actual music management function of it-- Apple's great at serving consumers, but would they be able to serve the function of a record company in terms of promotion and booking? Digital distribution is super (and it definitely cuts down on costs), but no one's buying your music if no one's heard of it.
Then again, SJ managed the content producers at Pixar just fine, and if he has a little help (the Moli report says Apple has hired a publicist from Capitol Records), things might just turn out OK after all. I doubt Jay-Z and Beyonce are really involved, but if His Steveness decides to form a record company, he might just put the last nail in the traditional recording industry's coffin.

Filed under: Software, Internet Tools, iPhone
We know how much you love our Getting Things Done posts, so here's another.
The Godfather of productivity - no, not Merlin Mann...David Allen - recommends that people always have an "ubiquitous capture tool" at hand. In other words, something that you can use to jot down anything at any time. Why not use your iPhone?
iNozbe became available this week. I played with it briefly this afternoon, and it works pretty well. The UI is clean, readable, and perfectly sized for the iPhone. Once you sign up, you'll have to remove some "demo" items, but hey, just put it on your Next Actions list! iNobze features four subscription levels, starting with a limited free plan and capping off with their "Super!" plan, which is the most generous and costs $14.95/month (though you can save money by paying for a year at a time).
Some of you have complained that we don't post about enough freebies, so this one is for you. Ta-Da List by 37signals was recently revamped for the iPhone. It's very flexible, suited for GTD and totally free. So there you go.
Finally, David briefly mentioned iPhone iGTD earlier this afternoon. It's an iPhone-optimized implementation of the iGTD software, which recently added .Mac synchonization.
So check them out, and remember: Now you've got absolutely NO excuse for leaving any incompletes on your "@Phone" list.Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/07/16/inozbe-gtd-for-your-iphone/#comments - Menuet and Art Collector released as careware
Filed under: Software, Freeware, iTunes
Ollie Wagner sends word that he has release both of his Spencere apps, Menuet and Art Collector, as careware. Over on his site, you can get both of the apps for free, as long as you promise to donate to the charity of your choice (he's listed eight good choices if you don't have a preference).
We've covered both before-- Menuet is a pretty iTunes controller with a few other features built in, including Last.fm support, themes, and a sleep timer. Art Collector grabs artwork from Amazon for your iTunes library-- it's a little useless, because iTunes now does this for you, but if there are a few covers iTunes can't find, maybe Art Collector can.
Together, they used to run around $13 (although Art Collector separately was $7, and was originally bundled with Menuet). If you've seen these before and never gotten a chance to try them, here's it is, and hopefully you can help out a charity as well.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Joe Hewitt of joehewitt.com. A software engineer and web developer as well as a classically trained kazoo player, Hewitt is the man behind the latest iPhone development craze: iUI, the user interface software development kit for the iPhone. iUI, which is built using JavaScript and CSS, makes it easy for third party developers to create lickable iPhone websites that both look and, more importantly, feel like they were created natively as part of the iPhone.
To use iUI, you don't have to be a CSS or Javascript expert. iUI converts standard HTML source material into iPhone interface conventions, even taking advantage of native iPhone graphics. And, importantly, iUI continues to grow and develop as an open source project and as a topic of discussion at the iPhone Web Development Google Groups community.

Filed under: Multimedia, Blast From the Past
This post combines two things we love: inventive geeks and vintage Macs.
Peter Jungers and Josh Burker worked together to write several HyperCard stacks to compose their music, which you can listen to here. That's a trio of 68K Macs you're listening to (though it reminds me of a scene from Suspiria).
On their site you can listen to all of the music, watch a video of the Macs in action and download their HyperCard stacks for use in your own weekend projects. Well done, Peter and Josh!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
