- Apple patent for charger DRM
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, iPod Family
I don't think this is such a great idea.
According to the New Scientist, Apple has filed for a patent on a new security measure for mobile devices. Basically, it involves locking a mobile device to a particular charging cable so that if it's stolen, it won't recharge when plugged into another cable.
While I appreciate the sentiment of creating a deterrent to theft, this strikes me as more likely to be annoying than helpful. It will eviscerate the after-market supply of charging cables and docks from third party vendors (which are generally more reasonably priced than Apple's offerings). I fear that what has happened with the MagSafe power adapters will basically recur with Dock connectors. When Apple was just using a plug, it was possible to get reasonably priced third-party power adapters (and car/airline chargers), whereas today (since the MagSafe connector is patented) it is not.
This just raises the price and annoyance level ($59 for an airline adapter!?). What do you think? Do you like the idea of DRM'ed iPod or iPhone power adapters?

It was a good weekend in Holyoke, Massachusetts and Ann Arbor, Michigan, as each city opened a new Apple Store on Saturday. As usual, we ask any TUAW operatives who may have attended to share their reports and/or pictures. So, did you go, and if you did, how was it? Let us know in the comments.
I wanted to get up to the Holyoke store, but real life had other plans for me. I wonder if the opening will affect the authorized retailer in neighboring Northampton, MA.
Anyway, here's hoping you scored a T-shirt, the Opening Day Contest's grand prize and, dare we say, an iPhone!
Finally, if you haven't gone down to the stores yet, show us a little love and set the in-store Macs to TUAW!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: iPod Family, Universal Binary
Although there are many solutions for getting the hidden audio files from your iPod back onto your Mac, many folks have long considered PodWorks to the best of the lot. After more than two years since the last update, it was revised this week to version 2.9. The most significant improvement is that it's now a Universal Binary, though there have apparently been some bug fixes with regards to videos and an update to the interface. If you only need to transfer songs occasionally, the donationware Senuti will probably be adequate but if you're regularly transferring songs, I suggest giving PodWorks a look.
PodWorks is $8 and a demo is available.

Filed under: Tips and tricks, iPhone
Sometimes you want to connect your iPhone to your Mac just to give it a charge. However, iTunes launches each time and starts a time-consuming synchronization. How can you prevent this?
The solution is pretty easy. First, connect your iPhone to your Mac and launch iTunes. Next, click on your iPhone in the sidebar and then de-select the "Automatically sync when iPhone is connected" option in the first tab. The next time you connect your iPhone to your Mac, you won't initiate a whole ordeal. Ahhh.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

I own a Wii, and i installed Windows Vista in Boot Camp on my MacBook Pro primarily so I could play Half Life 2 and catch up with some of the other rockin' games coming out for PCs (buying Vista at OEM prices via a local computer shop numbed some of the pain). With all this rockin' gaming I have going on, however, I am still admittedly a sucker for a good Breakout-style game, and Ricochet Lost Worlds is just such a game. Yes I know Breakout is one of the traditional jokes about Mac gaming, but those stereotypical days are disappearing anyway. Cool powerups and some unique challenges in Ricochet caught my attention, and a today-only sale at MacZOT for $10.95 instead of its regular $19.95 in the Mac Game Store just netted a PayPal purchase from me. If you're looking for some basic gaming that doesn't take an hour just for the warmup, Ricochet Lost Worlds is a good choice.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

This is kind of amazing when you think about it. According to Macworld UK - reporting on information from DRAMeXchange - Apple has secured about 25% of the entire world's supply of flash memory. That's a lot of iPod nanos and iPhones!
Apparently, production problems have reduced yields, leading to increased flash prices and even shortages for other vendors. When you consider all the memory cards for cameras, etc. out there, that Apple is using that much of the global supply is quite remarkable.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
