- Wisconsin Apple Store opens this weekend
Filed under: Retail
It seems like only yesterday that a new Apple Store was opening in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (OK, so it wasn't yesterday, it was last Friday). Now, another Wisconsin store is set to open, this time in Madison.
Apple Store West Towne will open on Satruday, July 7th at 10:00 AM. The store is located at 66 West Towne Mall, between Williams Sonoma and Coldwater Creek. You can get full travel directions here.
As usual, we're asking any TUAW operatives who visit this weekend to send us stories and photos. Good luck, have fun and we're hoping you score a T-shirt!
Thanks, Kevin!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

The gang from Over the Edge gave us a sneak peek of two new features in Unity 2.0: a cool terrain tool and real-time dynamic shadows. Check out the video, but also check out their page of all the other features coming soon to Unity.

Since picking up my iPhone a week ago (has it been a week already?), I've lived in fear of that first scratch. How long will I be able to put it off? I carry my iPhone around like a newborn.
That's silly, of course. The iPhone is a tool and should be treated as such. To ease my mind, I ordered an Invisible Shield. We've discussed Invisible Shield a number of times. Basically, it's a super-strong film that you apply directly to your precious, keeping it from harm. I saw a demo at MacWorld a few years ago, and was very impressed.
Once it arrives, I'll let you know how it performs. Invisible Shield for iPhone comes with a lifetime guarantee, costs $24.95US and is shipping now.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Software, Internet Tools, Open Source, Beta Beat
Vienna is a free, open source news reader that we like (we've written about it here); it's not as full-featured as NetNewsWire but it's a pretty slick app. The Vienna Development Team is preparing to release version 2.2, which will feature a huge list of changes and improvements, including:
- A new UI (no more brushed metal!)
- Russian localization
- Improved drag-and-drop from Safari
- Unsubscribe/resubscribe command added to the File menu
- SQLite updated to 3.4.0
Vienna is free, universal and requires Mac OS 10.3.9 or later.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Gear Live has a nice tutorial for getting IRC up on the iPhone. You'll need Colloquy, this plugin, and about 10 seconds to spend with Terminal. Once you're done with setup, launch (or relaunch) Colloquy and point your iPhone's browser to http://YourIP:6667. Visual learners may want to check out the walk-through gallery.
Enter the password you set up in the previous step and you're all set! The UI is clean and readable. I've tried it and it worked great.

Apple has sold many, many iPhones in the past few days, and you know what that means! Lots of phones that were, up until last Friday, perfectly capable have been tossed aside for a new love (a touchable love at that).
This leaves us with one question: what the heck do you do with that old phone? Luckily, exPhone is here to help you out. This site lists all sorts of ways you can recycle your old phone, so as not to get Greenpeace angry (and Earth is the only planet we have... for now). Not only does exPhone lists ways for you to recycle your phone, it also shows you how to donate your phone to charities (as long as it is still in working order, that is).Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Like Mac software? Like stunts designed to promote and sell it? Then guess what, buddy-- you're in luck. It seems MacHeist 2 is just around the corner. Last year's ARG / bargain / Mac software love fest is coming around again, it seems, and while details are slim at the moment, odds are there'll be more very soon.
The main site still says nothing, but over on the forums, things are starting to get interesting. First, head honcho Phill Ryu hints at something that might be a "Web 2.0" "Game thingy where you win stuff," and then shared a bunch of little pictoral hints about something called "groupthinkheist."
Then, a tipster, who we'll keep anonymous, sent us word that an email had been sent announcing MacHeist 2 and sending everyone to... um... something. I couldn't get it to do anything now (you probably had to type in a code), but previously there was action going on there. That action was accompanied by more forums board talk, but apparently that talk was silenced. And all we're really left with is hype for something we knew was coming anyway.
So are you all excited for MacHeist to come around again this year? I only watched from the sidelines last year, and it's really just a way to sell software (and not a very profitable way for devs, either). But it is a creative way, and I have to admit it sounds fun. What do you think?
Update: Phill himself tells us this "event" is completely unrelated to MacHeist (so it definitely hasn't started yet), but that MacHeist 2 is coming later this year.
Update2: If you're interested, lots more information about what's happening is showing up on this wiki.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

We know what you've been thinking. "Gee, I wish I could SSH into my Mac with my iPhone." Well, now you can.
WebShell is simple enough to install (just two commands in Terminal) and configure. Once it's all set up, point your iPhone to http://localhost:8022 in Safari and you're good to go!
The folks who are working on this are asking for your input. Send them your screenshots and experiences so they can make it even better. WebShell is free.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
