  • NYT reports on first announced iPhone vulnerability

    Happy Monday, everyone; are you done reading Potter yet? Here's a somewhat less magical story for you. Today's New York Times includes an article with the utterly un-sensational headline "IPhone Flaw Lets Hackers Take Over, Security Firm Says" (yes, Times-style requires that even the 'i' in iPhone be capitalized in a headline), discussing the discovery of a buffer overflow exploit in Mobile Safari. The exploit, which can be triggered by browsing to a malicious page in Safari from the phone, claims to allow the execution of arbitrary code, and could expose personal information to an attacker. The exploit is not in the wild and has been reported to Apple; full details are at the Independent Security Evaluators site.

    Is this a very bad thing? Not necessarily; it's not a zero-day vulnerability, the research team is communicating with Apple, and there is no released exploit code out there in the big bad Internet that can currently zombify your iPhone. Unlike many smartphones, which may not have a frequent firmware update mechanism, the iPhone is syncing to iTunes constantly and can be updated at any point, so one would hope this gets patched rapidly. If you use some basic precautions (don't click mystery links, don' t use unfamiliar wireless access) you should be covered if something like this ever sees general distribution.

    Is this, on the other hand, an top-notch opportunity for some iPhone and Mac OS X security FUD from the Grey Lady? You betcha. Let's take a look at some of the assertions in the article, and compare them with both the claims of the vulnerability discoverers and the reality on the ground.

  • Widget Watch: Dashalytics 3.0

    Google's Analytics service is a great (and free) tool for anyone who wants to track website visitor statistics. How many visits, who and where they're coming from, what OS and browser they're using, how long they stay - nearly the whole enchilada. To view your statistics in a place other than Google's site, Dashalytics from Rob Scriva is truly your best choice. With access to what seems to be all the stats Analytics has to offer, Dashalytics wraps everything up in a gorgeous UI that has received a wonderful update for this new v3 release. While the changelog states there are simply too many changes to list, I notice the widget itself feels snappier, especially when switching between viewing stats from multiple sites under the same Google Analytics account (i.e. - yes, you can view all sites registered on your account). Dashalytics is also smart in that it stores your login credentials in Keychain, making it easy to use multiple instances to track sites under multiple Google Analytics accounts.

    Provided as donationware, Dashalytics is a truly great choice for staying on top of what your visitors are up to. I highly recommend you drop Mr. Scriva a few bucks for his good work.

  • Quinn is not Tetris, is Universal

    I love this quote from the Quinn author Simon Härtel: "Quinn is an implementation of a popular falling-blocks game which, according to the Tetris Company, must not be named here." We've mentioned this game before as "...one of the most beautiful applications on the Mac." Version 3.5 continues to look great and finally brings Quinn into the Universal Binary age.

    One of the coolest things about Quinn is its support for network play, allowing you go head-to-head against other players. This version also opens up some new customization options, so if you're missing your old-school (not) Tetris experience, you should give Quinn a look
