  • Keyspan TuneView color LCD iTunes remote

We last mentioned the TuneView a year ago in its iPod iteration. Now, Keyspan is shipping a revamped model with a USB transceiver for controlling iTunes on a Mac from "up to 150 ft" away. It has a color LCD which will allow you to "browse and control your iTunes music, videos and podcasts without going to the computer." The device is RF in 2.4GHz band so it should work through walls (to some extent). The idea is apparently to pair the TuneView with an Airport Express or other music extender so you can change your tunes without getting up.

The TuneView is available now for $149.

  • Elgato brings EyeTV Support to HDHomeRun

We previously mentioned a hacked together, rudimentary Mac interface for the HDHomeRun and expressed hope for EyeTV support. Well, our wish has been granted as Elgato has announced the HDHomeRun for the Mac. The HDHomeRun is a nifty little device that features two over-the-air / Clear QAM HD tuners which decode HDTV signals and send them out over ethernet. The video can then be watched on any Mac on the network with the EyeTV software. Since there are two tuners, you can watch or record two different channels at the same time.

The EyeTV package includes the HDHomeRun as well two EyeTV licenses for $199.95.

  • Newsgator mobile for iPhone

A while back David opined about eight apps he wanted on the iPhone and number one on his list was a old TUAW favorite, rss reader NetNewsWire. Well that hasn't happened yet, but Newsgator (which owns NNW) has announced an iPhone optimized version their web based newsreader at http://m.newsgator.com. What's significant about this, of course, is that like the regular web based Newsgator, this mobile version can be synced to NetNewsWire to preserve your feeds and read/unread state. So if you're an iPhone using NNW junkie you may want to check it out.

  • Only 146k iPhone activations?

I have to admit: this is a little surprising at first glance. AT&T is reporting only 146,000 iPhone activations "in the first few days of its availability," which has led to a downturn in Apple's share price today (as of this writing it's down over 8 points to about $135). AT&T's share price is also down, despite the carrier reporting 61% growth in profits in the second quarter.

Apparently, what happened is that analysts built up wild and unrealistic expectations for the iPhone launch, and with the numbers looking a bit softer than expected, the stocks are taking a hit. I think it's really much to early to say anything definite, with the 146,000 activations only covering a vague "first few days." It's still going to be a while before we know the full extent of the iPhone's market penetration, and it's certainly much too early to jump ship like so many of these skittish investors and analysts.

  • Hypercard's history

SiliconUser takes a short look at ye olde Hypercard technology, Apple's precursor to the concepts that eventually became HTML and the World Wide Web. The project was originally created in 1985 as an easier way to create programs on the Macintosh-- it consisted of a "cards and stacks" metaphor, as in you created one card that linked to another card in the stack, and so on. Early Hypercard stacks just worked as organized information databases, but eventually Hypercard ended up doing more and more-- cards could work as applications in themselves, and the links between them served as a precursor to hyperlinks and what we know as the Internet today. Personally, I only used Hypercard very minimally, and it's hard for me to imagine as much functionality coming out of Hypercard as we've got with CSS, HTML, and PHP today. But Hypercard faithful (of which the numbers seem to be not quite known), held onto the application for a long time.

Hypercard's downfall came arguably not because it failed to stand up to new concepts, but because Apple, in a blunder, passed the program away to Claris, who tried to sell it rather than include it free in Macs. By the time Apple took it back, in 1993, the momentum was lost, and after a short period with Apple's Quicktime division, Hypercard was discontinued in 2004. Previous to that, Hypercard 3.0 was shown at WWDC 1996 (including the ability to display Hypercard stacks in a web browser, which might have been the key to keeping Hypercard alive), but that release never came. There are a few traces of Hypercard left on Apple's site, but as a technology, it's as dead as dead gets.

    Thanks, Thomas!

  • iTunes: Free Tuesday

Welcome to this week's edition of iTunes: Free Tuesday featuring a new collection of free singles and videos from around the world. Each week we send out our dealgnomes to the furthest corners of the Earth to find and retrieve iTunes freebies from all the International stores. Here's what's new today.

    US Music

US: Black Heart Queen by Gallows
Each week, we find a track from an artist or a band who's on the cusp of success and bring it to you, for free, as our Single of the Week. Last week, we gave you some cool California folk-pop, but we're completely switching gears this week. Brace yourself for the uncompromising English metal/punk of Gallows. "Black Heart Queen" is fueled by a contagious, spitting anger and playing with a fury that recalls classic early '80s hardcore mixed with the melodic heaviness of newer acts like Funeral for a Friend and Bullet for My Valentine. Not for the meek.

US: Ya Me Voy by Ceci Bastida
Each week, we find a track from an artist or a band who's on the cusp of success and bring it to you, for free, as our Canción de la Semana. Ceci Bastida spent the majority of her teenage years singing and writing songs for the ska-punk group, Tijuana NO. For her first solo album, Bastida moves away from the crunchy side of things and delivers a smart, quirky pop song with hints of electronics underscored by an acoustic rhythm.

US: I Don't Wanna (With Black Thought) by Carol Riddick with Black Thought
Our Discovery Download puts the focus on a different genre each week, offering up a free track from an artist we think is worth your attention. Philadelphia's reputation as a launch pad for stellar soul singers is further validated by Carol Riddick, who was discovered performing at a wedding attended by Will Smith's manager James "JL" Lassiter. The meeting led to studio work with DJ Jazzy Jeff's A Touch of Jazz production company and cameo appearances on projects by Musiq, Anthony Hamilton, Terry Ellis, Jill Scott, and Norman Brown. No longer content in the bridesmaid role, Riddick exudes class and confidence on "I Don't Wanna," (with a cameo by the Roots' Black Thought) a butterscotch sweet track taken from her debut, Moments Like This.

  • iPhone 101: Locate your callers

Here's a neat feature that almost works beautifully. If you've received a call from a number you don't recognize, go to "Recents" and touch its blue arrow. A window appears that lists the number as well as the geographic origin, based on area code. Pretty cool.

Of course, if a person purchased her phone in New York and them moved to Colorado, this information would be incorrect. Still, it could help you identify that "mystery caller."

  • Mighty Mouse take apart

I recently purchased a wireless Mighty Mouse. Several users have complained of a sticky roller ball, and I was concerned until I was shown this step-by-step, illustrated take-apart. You'll only need an X-acto knife, a tiny screwdriver and some patience to remove the ball, clean it off and reassemble your mouse. Perfect!

I've bookmarked this one for future reference.

    Thanks, Grant!
