- iPhone camera problems and solutions
Apparently some people are reporting problems with the iPhone's camera producing green-tinted pictures. iPhone Atlas suggests that the problem is probably being caused by some defect in the iPhone's automatic white balancing. Fortunately, they also suggest some post-processing solutions with iPhoto or Photoshop. So, dear TUAW readers, have any of you experienced the green tinting in your iPhone photos?

Filed under: Audio, Software, Internet Tools
Rogue Amoeba, purveyors of all sorts of wonderful audio software, have been releasing details on pending updates for two of their most popular products: Airfoil and Audio Hijack Pro. Both upgrades seem like they're coming sometime soon, with Audio Hijack Pro 3 (a tool allowing you to record any audio from your Mac) sounding like it could land sooner rather than later. Details and screenshots (like the one above) of AHP3 are being posted to this forum thread, including thoughts on whether they'll charge an upgrade fee (though prices for new licenses should remain at $32). If Rogue Amoeba wants my two cents (which they admittedly didn't request), I'm all for developers, especially indies, charging upgrade fees for major point releases. It sure is nice when they don't, but I completely understand that underneath all that code and slick features there's a human being that's just trying to survive (and possibly provide) like the rest of us.Continue reading Rogue Amoeba releases details on Airfoil 3, Audio Hijack Pro 3

We've written about the iPod's popularity in the medical field, including Dr. Michael Barrett, who gave recordings of heart sounds to med students, and the digital stethoscope recording system for the iPod nano.
While those things were cool, they're nothing compared to what's being done with the iPhone. A group called Heart Imaging Technologies ( or "HeartIT"*) has built a system that will allow a doctor to send or view a video of a patient's beating heart to an iPhone. Now that's cool.
I'm not a physician, so these videos are nothing more that pulsing globs of grey to me, but they're pretty cool to watch.
*Thank goodness they didn't choose "iHeart."

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/07/20/iphone-assisting-physicians/#comments - CoverFlow, "Get all" podcasts in iTunes 7.3.1
Filed under: Video, How-tos, Tips and tricks, iTunes
Reader Bo Smet sends along (thanks!) two cool new podcasting features in iTunes 7.3.1 that I hadn't noticed yet. First and foremost, podcasts are now browseable with CoverFlow, which is awesome (and probably points to an eventual implementation of CoverFlow on the iPod, if speculation is your thing). However, podcasters aren't sure exactly how art is determined for this-- they can define art by episode, so which episode art is shown in CoverFlow? Also, video podcasts use an image that comes a few frames into the video, which doesn't really help unless the podcast is designed to show a logo or identifier early on.
The other new feature works great, though-- when browsing a specific podcast, you'll notice that a new "Get All" button shows up near the title. When you hit that, iTunes will automatically download all available episodes of that podcast. Depending on how many are available, that might be a pretty big addition to your collection, but if you find a really good podcast that you can't get enough of, it's great to have one-click access to everything out there.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Earlier this week, Duke University was blaming the iPhone for persistent outages they were experiencing on their wireless network. Their IT department reported that on campus iPhones were flooding access points with requests, thereby knocking them down, a dozen (or more) at a time.
Today, it is expected that Duke will release a report on their investigation into the matter, which may exonerate the iPhone. Duke's assistant vice president of academic services technology support, Julian Lombardi, is reported as having said that all aspects of the school's network are under consideration. That doesn't mean that the iPhone is free and clear, but at least he isn't laying blame on it as clearly as he did last week.
We'll let you know what's up when this report is finally released.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Apple Corporate, Apple Financial, iPhone
Think you're worth 3 bucks a month? Or even 11 bucks a month? Those are the figures being bandied around today over at Seeking Alpha regarding the secret details of AT&T's revenue sharing with Apple. The post suggests that AT&T may be paying Apple $3/month for AT&T customers who switch to the iPhone and $11/month for iPhone customers who have switched carriers to AT&T. They cite a recent Piper Jaffray research note authored by analyst Gene Munster.
That sounds like a lot of money to me (especially for the switching customers) heading off to Apple along with the revenues on the physical iPhone sales.

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/07/20/how-much-are-you-worth-to-apple/#comments - Ive wins National Design Award
Filed under: Hardware, iPod Family, Odds and ends, iMac, iPhone
It seems like Apple's Johnathan Ive does two things: design great products, and win awards for designing said products. So today's Ive news is of the second order-- at the National Design Awards in Washington on Wednesday, Ive picked up the product design award. According to the Washington Post, Ive was recognized for his work on the iMac, the iBook, and the iPod, but we can't help but think having the iPhone now under his belt didn't hurt either.
Awards also went to Adobe for creating Photoshop, the "gold standard" of photo manipulation software, and a few other architects and designers from various places around the country. The awards were handed out by First Lady Laura Bush, who said Ive's work "...has made it more fun to go back in time and play oldies on our iPods." She's still listening to oldies? Someone show this woman the podcast page on iTunes!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/07/20/ive-wins-national-design-award/#comments - Apple files patent for synchronized lyrics display
Filed under: Audio, iPod Family, Multimedia, Rumors
If there's one music player feature that never seemed to catch on, it's showing off the lyrics of a given song. The record companies quibbled a little bit about cover art, but now even iTunes will provide you with cover art, and yet lyrics are still confined to ad-laden websites trying to hide from the copyright brigade. Music players gained a little ground earlier this year when Gracenote won the ability to distribute song lyrics, but so far only Yahoo Music has taken them up on the offer (and who uses Yahoo Music anyway, right?).
Apple is getting there, though. According to Ars Technica, they've applied for a patent to "dynamically" show text on the screen of a portable media device while the media is playing, specifically synchronized lyrics. They also mention two ways of doing this-- either scrolling the text across the screen (which seems like a strange setup, but might work), and the more standard method of distinguishing one part of the text from another-- in other, less legal words, the bouncing ball technique.
Either way, I've never seen a good implementation of showing lyrics in a music player (the last time I messed around with it was a plugin for Winamp however many years ago, and of course in that case you had to get them in there yourself). If anyone can tell you what the hell Björk is supposed to be saying on her latest album, hopefully it's Apple.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/07/20/omnigraffle-4-2-is-available/#comments - Jing makes screen captures slick and easy
Filed under: Software, Cool tools
It's always something: just as I start to write up a Mac 101 on screen grabbing, along comes something cool, free and pretty: Jing for Mac. Built by the screen capture savants at TechSmith (developers of Windows tools Camtasia and SnagIt), Jing combines a lightweight, one-click image or motion capture tool with a free 200 MB hosting account at Screencast.com. The result is a fine way to quickly get 'casual' captures online and shared with a minimum of fuss. The motion captures are saved as .swf Flash video, which is either a bonus or a drawback depending on your perspective.
The current-but-one version (labeled a 'project,' not a beta) gave me a smidge of trouble on a dual-monitor setup, but the current 1.2.4 version seems to be working better, and it also cleared up a conflict with Growl. I'll do a few captures here and get a gallery together to see how they look. Jing isn't going to replace power tools like Snapz Pro, ImageWell or Skitch, but it's pretty good at what it does. Also, as Laurie pointed out, the Jing installer comes with a handy 'autoinstall' AppleScript that copies the application and then unmounts the disk image -- particularly useful for those friends and family (you know who they are) that seem to get confused and end up running applications from a mounted .dmg instead of installing them properly.

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/07/20/jing-makes-screen-captures-slick-and-easy/#comments - AAPL earnings buoyed by two days of iPhone sales
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Apple Financial, Apple, iPhone
According to the Dow Jones Marketwatch, apparently Apple's earnings last quarter are going to be much higher thanks to something called the iPhone. You probably haven't heard much about this device, but our sources tell us it's some sort of hybrid between a Personal Digital Assistant and one of those phones you can use in your car.
Investors are cooing about the tiny "iPhone", because even though it only appeared on Apple's quarterly cycle for two days, the estimated 500,000 units sold in the first weekend will probably be listed as at least partly responsible for the 34% rise in AAPL's profits. The iPod didn't do too badly either-- everyone's expecting Apple to announce that around 10 million iPods were sold last quarter also.
And not surprisingly, bigger things are on the way-- one analyst says "the iPhone will have an even stronger halo effect than the iPod on Macintosh's market share." If two days of the iPhone can do this much, how big will AAPL get with a whole quarter of the gadget?Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Is that "Sent from my iPhone" message starting to get on your nerves? By default, every email sent from your iPhone gets appended by a signature specified in Settings > Mail > Signature. To clear out this signature entirely, delete all the text from the Signature text field. Your emails will lose that "Sent from my iPhone" tag.
Of course, if signatures don't particularly bother you, you might want to add a more personalized quote or even some contact information (although preferably not using unnecessary ASCII art). Or, you can put on your antipersonnel hat and start messing with people's minds, e.g. "Sent from my Blueberry." How do you intend to sign your emails?

No, not exploding batteries. I'm talking about 12-18 months from now, when thousands upon thousands of iPhone batteries, completely sealed from consumers, will begin to lose their juice. Sheldon Liber, on our sister site Blogging Stocks, suggests that in about a year, Apple is going to be dealing with a lot of unhappy campers who will have to surrender their iPhones for a bit while a new battery is transplanted into their tiny tech wonders.
Of course, we now have warranty info, which means you really shouldn't worry until next July, right? Something Sheldon misses is the fact that, for another $30 or so, they'll give you a loaner. That should put a stop to the whining-- mostly. It will certainly ease the sting of a 3-day turnaround. But when you can get a replacement BlackBerry battery for less than $10 in many cases, once again users may complain about the "Apple tax."Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/07/20/iphone-battery-a-ticking-time-bomb/#comments - Hello World, says iPhone
Filed under: Software, Hacks, iPhone
Those crazy dudes working around the clock to hack the iPhone open have gotten one step closer. Last night, it was posted on the iPhone dev wiki that a hacker named "Nightwatch" had compiled and launched a Hello World application, the first nonstandard application to run on the iPhone. He did this by using a project of his called the ARM/Mach-O Toolchain, which is "being refined and tested" and "should be released as soon as possible."
This does not mean, however, that the iPhone is completely broken open-- from what I understand (and I'm definitely not a hardcore hacker), each iPhone has its own special code to be cracked, and even if the code is entered, there's no guarantee that the next software update won't break everything again.
But running a user application-- any user application-- on the iPhone is definitely a huge step in the process, and it's the result of a lot of these guys working around the clock since iPhone's release. Good for them.
