The new iPhone 1.0.1 update just hit iTunes. TUAW is here to keep you informed about what that update means to you--as a normal user and/or as a hacker. Here's the dish we've learned about, what we're speculating about and what we know for a fact.

Filed under: Software, Cool tools, Productivity, Tips and tricks, Internet Tools, Mods
If you use Twitter via the web, you can simply click the trash can next to that last tweet that had a typo or - *gasp* - you realized all too late shouldn't be public. If you use something like the TUAW favorite Twitterrific from the Iconfactory, however, you're at a loss, as it features no such trash can. Fortunately, Daniel Jalkut (of such fine Red Sweater Software products as MarsEdit, FlexTime and FastScripts) has posted enough embarrassing tweets to warrant the creation of a Twitter undo AppleScript that automates the deletion if your previous tweet, and he is provided it free of charge from the Red Sweater Blog.
By default, all you need is Jalkut's excellent FastScripts product (either the commercial version or its free little brother), and you can simply follow his brief instructions to get set up with a Twitter safety net. Note that if you use external apps like Twitterrific you won't actually see the tweet disappear from your account. However, if you see the delete confirmation that Jalkut's script is designed to display upon successful operation, the tweet should actually have been deleted and you can check your actual Twitter.com account page to be sure.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Rumors abound that Apple will be unleashing a brand new iMac on August 7th, which seems a little odd given that is very close to the beginning of the school year. However, given the existence of these photos of a purported new iMac keyboard and the fact that our sister blog Engadget was just invited to a press event on August 7th might prove me wrong.
The invite made it clear that this gathering is all about the Mac, so what do you think we'll see?Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Gaming
Remember back at WWDC when EA announced they were coming back to the Mac in a big way? Well several of our readers did, and have written in to point out that it's the end of July and EA on the Mac is nowhere to be seen. Back in June Macworld reported that EA would be bringing four popular franchises to the Mac starting in July, and that these would be released simultaneously with their PC counterparts thanks the the Cider technology. Well Peter Cohen at Macworld recently noticed that Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is shipping for the PC, but the Mac version is nowhere to be found (it's not even listed among the options on platforms page). This sets a very bad precedent for the return of EA to the Mac. And so Mac gamers are forced to ask: oh Electronic Arts, where art thou?

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/07/31/oh-ea-where-art-thou/#comments - Updates galore: Security Update 2007-007, Safari 3.03, iPhone 1.01
Filed under: Software Update, Security, iPhone
Today is a busy day in the land of software updates. Apple has released 3 updates today: security update 2007-007, Safari Beta 3.03, and iPhone firmware 1.01. Let's take a look at each in turn.
The security update is recommended for all and addresses issues in bzip2, CFNetwork, Core Audio, cscope, gnuzip, Kerberos, mDNSResponder, PDFKit, PHP, Quartz Composer, samba, WebKit, and WebCore. Full details can be found here. It is available now.
The iPhone Firmware 1.01 and Safari beta 3.03 are both security updates that plug various holes in Safari. Sorry, iPhone users, no nifty new features are listed, but it will make your iPhone more secure. Apple does note that the iPhone update will not appear in Software Update on your Mac. You must sync your iPhone using iTunes to get the update. Both are available now.

Digging through the archives we came upon the lost tape of WWDC: an interview with Daniel Jalkut of Red Sweater Software. Red Sweater sells MarsEdit and Black Ink, among other apps. Daniel was kind enough to talk WWDC, iPhone and show us around Black Ink, a very nice crossword app.
NOTE: Sorry about the interlacing issues!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

It's sad but true; not everybody can have an iPhone. But for those poor souls with a supported Windows Mobile device, things just got a little bit better as Mark/Space has released version 4.0 of their Missing Sync for Windows Mobile with support for the new Windows Mobile 6 platform. New to version 4, Mark/Space has added plugins for video support (both ways), call logs, and SMS messages. And as always Missing Sync continues syncing support for iCal, Address Book, iTunes, iPhoto, etc.
Missing Sync for Windows Mobile is $39.95 and upgrade pricing is $24.95 from a variety of Missing Sync products.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Our pals at Engadget have turned up what appears to be the first third-party iPhone battery replacement kit. It comes from Brando, a Hong Kong company that is reasonably well known in the mobile accessories aftermarket. The kit includes the instructions, a screwdriver, a case opener, and the battery. Unfortunately, replacing the iPhone battery looks to be a considerably bigger challenge than on an iPod, as the battery is soldered to the motherboard and the iPhone is rather tougher to crack. If you want to get a sense for how difficult this will be, check out the iPhone take-apart video we posted earlier. In short, even though I've done an iPod replacement, I wouldn't even begin to think about doing an iPhone myself. Needless to say, this will violate your warranty.
The Brando replacement iPhone battery kit is available for $20.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Last week many, many of you reported problems with wifi since the OS X 10.4.10 update. Fortunately, Apple appears to have heard your cries of anguish and has released the Airport Extreme Update 2007-4. Apple doesn't say much about what the update contains but does say it "is recommended for all Intel-based MacBook, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini computers and improves the reliability of AirPort connections."
So, for those of you who had problems, did this fix it?

Filed under: Hardware, Odds and ends, Mods, Apple
If one were to draw a Venn diagram of my interests this clockwork Pismo mod would fall squarely in the overlapping circles of 'Steampunk' and 'Apple tech.' Tom Mordasky at MacMod.com took some broken clock gears, aluminum, a sharp knife or two and created a thing of beauty. Pictured above, before he applied some glossy paint, this Pismo (which is a G3 Powerbook, for those of you who are only familiar with Apple's more recent metallic efforts) looks like something Jules Verne would be proud to write with.

Today not only marks the release of a new beta Remote Desktop client from Microsoft, but also a new beta Microsoft Office Open XML File Format Converter for Mac 0.2 (Beta). What the heck is this? It converts Office files that use Microsoft's new Open XML file format (i.e. files created in Office 2007 for Windows) into a file format that Office 2004 for the Mac can read. This release promises improved conversion of files containing inline graphics, amongst other things.
Since this is a beta Microsoft warns that all files might not be converted correctly. They suggest you open the file and make sure it looks like it should.
Update: As was pointed out in the comments, this only converts Word and PowerPoint documents.

Microsoft promised us some goodies this week, and they just delivered on that promise. The long awaited (at least by me) Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2.0 (Beta) is now available for download. This is a beta, but in my limited testing it is much, much faster (as one might expect). New in this Beta, which expires on March 31, 2008 are:
- Universal Binary (hurrah!)
- Works with Vista, and used the new Remote Desktop protocol
- Multiple session support (this is a big deal, though I can't actually figure out how to connect to more than one machine at a time)
- Better printer support, better UI

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Software, Internet Tools
The much-hyped (and little-used-- it's still in private beta) FTP client Flow has gotten a website, complete with a feature list, and some interesting screencasts about how the app will let you let Flow work with a browser, transfer files (remember that, the only thing FTP clients used to do?), and even edit and preview files on the fly.
I have to admit that it all looks pretty nifty (the Dropmarks system sounds cool-- drag a file to a bookmark icon, and it'll send that file out for you, complete with a tiny dialogue), but there's not a lot here that might yet lure me away from just using Cyberduck for free. The editor is probably the biggest draw, but even then, I can't yet see anything here that I can't really accomplish using some combo of TextMate and Transmit.
Still, can't judge a book by its cover, and can't just an editor without actually using it. Flow is still in private beta, with a release upcoming.
Thanks, Sebastiaan!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
