  • ImageWell receives big update

I'm a huge fan of ImageWell. In fact, I've used it to edit nearly every image I've posted to TUAW. If you're unfamiliar, it's a quick-and-dirty image editor that's perfect when Photoshop would be overkill. Crop or resize your image, add a watermark or upload to your server easily.

Today, version 3.2 is available, and offers Flickr, SmugMug and ImageShack compatibility. Just click to send your image on its way. You can also annotate images with text, flip, rotate and more. Plus, ImageWell offers support for FTP, .Mac, SFTP and WebDAV. You can even designate a local folder for export.

ImageWell is free. However, you can purchase the "Xtras pack" - which offers features in addition to those mentioned here - for $14.95US.

  • Jott2iGTD: Use voicemail to add tasks to iGTD

As many of you know, iGTD is a killer task management app that can't stop bringing cool features to the table. As fewer of you might know, Brett Terpstra at the Circle Six Design blog also can't seem to stop bringing awesome tools and features to the table; he's responsible for stuff like the FlickrMate bundle that provides some powerful Flickr integration with your TextMate projects, as well as the TextMate AutoTag bundle for WordPress, offering some great tagging features that integrate well with your WordPress blog. Amazingly, Brett's at it again, and this time he's allowing you to add tasks to iGTD using only the power of your voice - with a little help from Jott and Apple Mail, of course.

Jott is a service that allows you to send email and text messages by calling a private phone number. Calling this number allows you to leave a message which then gets dictated and sent to a recipient, including yourself. With the power of Brett's new Jott2iGTD utility and a customized rule you created in Apple Mail, you can leave a message with Jott that is emailed to you, which Mail processes and automatically converts into an iGTD task. Jotting (ha!) down a reminder or idea probably can't get much easier than this, though some setup and file shuffling is involved to get this all running properly.

As with his other goodies, Brett amazingly provides Jott2iGTD as donationware, with a PayPal link hidden at the bottom of the page (I really think you should move it above the fold, Brett!). A changelog is provided, along with instructions to get you all set up.

  • MacUpdate rolls out a bundle-- $50 for 7 apps

MacUpdate has another one of these bundle promotions going on-- is it just me, or is Mac software the only place (besides, say, pyramid schemes), where increasing bundles like this are sold? I don't show up at the grocery store to buy some oranges only to find that they're cheaper because 10,000 people bought them earlier that day.

Anyway, the bundle's not too bad, even without the extra promotional stuff. Right now, for $50, you get copies of:
    • SRS iWOW, an iTunes audio enhancement plugin
    • GarageSale, the eBay client
    • Cocktail, the utility that our own Scott McNulty calls "indispensible"
    • ProfCast, for lecture recording
    • Amadeus Pro, for multitrack sound editing
    • Fetch, an FTP client
    • Graphic Converter X, a useful little image editor
And then if the promo pans out, you can get more software out of the deal-- if a certain number of people (up to 10k) buy the bundle, then Little Snitch, Intaglio, and TechTool Pro get added to the bundle. With a week to go, they've only sold about 700 (for Little Snitch) today, so there's no guarantee you'll see any of the extra stuff, but the bundle might be worth it just for the apps above.

And MacHeist, always ready to jump on the hype train, is trying to add a little extra bonus onto all of this.

[ Thanks to everyone who sent this in! ]

  • MockDock for your iPhone

Despite the lack of a proper SDK iPhone apps have become a cottage industry. An industry that makes no money for those that are whipping up these apps, it is true, but who needs money, right?

The latest iPhone app that has no business model, but a very cool concept, is MockDock. MockDock is a simple webapp that links to a number of other iPhone ready apps. The clever part? It mimics the look of the iPhone home screen, so you add apps to your 'Dock' and go from there.

Mock Dock requires your email address to sign up, but it is free.

  • PocketTweets: Twitter for iPhone

The ultra portability of the iPhone lets services like Twitter and Pownce realize their intended purpose: tell the world what you're doing at any given moment.

PocketTweets offers a UI for Twitter designed especially for use with the iPhone. It's uncluttered and perfectly legible without zooming in. I tried it out this morning and it works great - Simply sign in with your Twitter credentials and you're off. I've bookmarked this one.

  • Consumer Reports on iPhone as a Phone

One of the most important things to think about when considering any new cell phone purchase is how well the device in question functions as a phone. Whatever other cool features it may have going for it: Internet access, sms, music and video playback or a camera, you will probably still want to make a few calls with it now and again as well.

As a new iPhone user, I'm neither overwhelmed or underwhelmed by the iPhone's ability to make and receive calls or by its call sound quality -- I think its fine. Coming from a Blackberry, for me the iPhone pretty much sounds the same as my old phone, so I'm satisfied with it.. However, Consumer Reports takes a different view of iPhone's voice and call quality.

According to the site, the iPhone is "undistinguished at best" when it comes to call voice quality. They also highlight some other shortcomings of the iPhone as a phone including its lack of voice-activated dialing and the lack of an easy method for accessing frequently called numbers.

Maybe its me but I don't miss voice dialing and I don't find it very difficult to access frequently needed numbers. Sure, it would be great to just hold down one key to dial a saved number -- as I used to do with my Blackberry -- but the lack of that feature, or the others highlighted in the article, don't really cause me to like the device any less. What you iPhone users out there? How do you think the iPhone rates as a phone?

    Thanks, Chris.
