- Mac 101: Reset your Mac OS X password
Filed under: Terminal Tips, Mac 101
We've all done this.* It's time to install something or run Software Update, but first we've got to enter our password. What was it again? Oops.
You can reset your password with the CD (or DVD) that came with your Mac, but if you don't have it, try this tip from Hackszine. Restart your machine while holding down the Command Key (or "Apple Key") and the "S" key. This will start your Mac up in "Single User Mode."
Now it's command line time. Don't worry, it's just three lines:
- #sh /etc/rc
- #passwd yourusername
- #reboot
*Well, not us, but, you know...our "friend."

We've mentioned Remote Buddy quite a few times over the last year as what was originally just an Apple Remote utility seems to gain features at a steady pace. First they added Wiimote support and now maker IOSPIRIT has announced iPhone compatibility. In some ways it's similar to Telekinesis which we mentioned before, in that it's basically a mini-web server that runs on, and gives you control of, your Mac through iPhone Safari. It generates little iPhone optimized web pages which give you access to several modules:
- Remote control (emulates Apple Remote to control Remote Buddy)
- Trackpad
- Keyboard
- Menu (browse Remote Buddy's menu)
- Music
- Now playing (in iTunes)
- Movies
- EyeTV
Remote Buddy is €19.99 (~$28) and a demo is available.

- Happy Birthday, iCal
There's something that can be said for a broken clock - It's correct twice a day. Which is more than you can say about the iCal icon - it's accurate only once a year. Today is that day!
It was on July 17, 2002 that iCal was born (hence the date on its icon). Three years later, in April of 2005, version 2.0 was released.
Today, our old friend iCal has a younger sibling on the iPhone and synchronizes with Google Calendar (kind of). Mac system administrators are waiting for the iCal server that will be a part of Leopard Server, while end users anticipate iCal 3.0 in October.
Happy birthday, iCal. Now go back into the box with Keynote, Pages, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD and all the other applications that Apple has forgotten.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

It was just a couple of hours ago that reader Greg wrote in to share his frustration with Parallels tech support, or the lack thereof, and a key missing feature in v3 -- "The members of their support forum are generally as confused as I am... [also] while Parallels 3.0 brought in 3D support, it REMOVED disk image resizing."
We did mention that interesting exclusion from version 3, but no sooner asked than answered: Build 4650, now available for download or via auto-update, features the triumphant return of the Parallels Image Tool, among other features and fixes (see below for the full list). No longer will dual-OS users be blocked from expanding a virtual disk! Relish your freedom, my friends, for it is sweet.Continue reading New Parallels build features return of Image Tool

Filed under: Humor, Cult of Mac, iPhone
DS Fanboy's Alisha Karabinus sent us this one, and I have to agree with her. While I'm not normally a man to call things cute (except in that derogatory sense: "Oh, you only beat Halo 2 on Normal difficulty? That's cute."), this papercraft iPhone is so tiny that it is, in point of fact, "cute."
I'm not sure why Junyang chose to make it so small (other than the obvious fact that smaller things are cute), but it's pretty impressive that he got a papercraft item that size to look so much like an iPhone. He even made a scale charger and cradle for it, and the box it came in. He even replicated the instruction manual for it! He's a madman!
But it does look cool. If a more to-size iPhone is your pleasure, there are a few different print-and-cut models floating around. And I'm pretty sure you're just one Photoshop scale away from shrinking it down to a size like this. Of course, in just a few years, they'll be this size anyway ("the iPhone Pico"), but until then we've got papercrafters to show us the cuteness.

Filed under: Hardware, Retail, iMac, Flickr Find
We've heard about them, and now Ian sends us his Flickr tour of the "Apple shop" inside a Best Buy. It's a weird combination-- Apple's elegance with Best Buy's garish discount electronics warehouse look-- but from what we've heard, it works.
Would you buy an Apple from Best Buy? Ian says the nearest Apple store is 15 miles away, so for actually buying and purchasing a Mac, I'd rather go to the Genius Bar. But of course this store isn't meant for me (even though I do buy games and electronics at Best Buy)-- it's meant for Windows folks coming in to get a new PC, and reconsidering for the purchase of an iMac.
The problem with that is that Apple doesn't compete on price, and Best Buy does (ironically enough, Ian points out that Best Buy's plans are actually more expensive than AppleCare). Apple competes on the pleasure of the UI and usability-- that's why Apple stores work so well, because the whole transaction is designed around using the item. Still, making their computers accessible and open like this even at Best Buy (as much as possible, anyway-- the place looks a little cramped) is a start at reaching the unwashed Windows masses and enticing them into a better world.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

It appears the Microsoft Mac Business Unit is alive after all as they popped up with an announcement of coming attractions for "the week of July 30th." They'll finally be offering a Universal Binary of the Remote Desktop Client which allows you to control Windows computers from your Mac (thereby hopefully addressing some of Scott's concerns). In addition they're promising beta 2 of the much lamented Office 2007 file format converters with "a significant Word refresh and the addition of PowerPoint (.pptx)."
In fact, the new General Manager of the MacBU Craig Eisler recently introduced himself and called for more "dialog" with customers. At least it's nice to know that things do seem to be progressing up there in the long wait for a Universal version of Office.
Thanks, Space Taker.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Internet, Internet Tools, iPhone
Today, we've come across another website optimized for the iPhone. TeleMoose is a front-end for Amazon, and it's pretty nice. The UI is tidy and much quicker than browsing Amazon.com over EDGE.
Select the category you're after - DVDs, for instance - and you're brought to a page of sub-categories (comedies, dramas, etc.), which features a handy, Cover Flow-like navigation as well as a list.
Placing an order, reading reviews and so on are all presented well. You iPhone jockeys will want to bookmark this one.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

If you remember the good old days of OS 9... well, maybe they weren't all that good, but at least it was easy (via the Internet control panel) to set all your helper applications, which would launch whenever you hit a mailto: or ftp: link. Nowadays you've got to dig into Mail.app just to change your default email application, and that's just a pain in the neck. What can solve this sticky situation? MisFox can.
Just revised to a Universal Binary, system preference panel-savvy, version 2-iy version 2, MisFox lets you set your default helpers and file mappings for all sorts of URLs, extensions and protocols. I've used it since way back and there's nothing handier for getting your auto-launching ducks in a row. And free? Such a deal.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Software, Internet, Internet Tools
Fresh from receiving an Apple Design Award at WWDC '07 (runner up for "Best Mac OS X User Experience"), the folks at Karelia have released Sandvox 1.2.2 (we've written about Sandvox before). If you're unfamiliar, it's a WYSIWYG web editor that features drag-and-drop ease, iLife integration, simple publishing and several attractive templates.
Speaking of templates, they've all been tweaked in version 1.2.2 to look great on an iPhone. Other changes include squashed bugs and localization improvements.
Sandvox requires Mac OS 10.4 or later, is universal and comes in both pro ($79US) and "regular" ($49US) versions. Version 1.2.2 is a free upgrade for registered users.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Gaming, iPod Family, iTS
Get your iPods out and your gaming thumbs on boys and girls - the iTunes Store just added a new game: The Sims Bowling (iTunes link). From the preview trailer in the iTunes Store, it looks like a pretty decent bowling game; users are able to adjust their position and direction before throwing, and you can of course create your own Sim with which to hit the lanes. Reviews are also pouring in at the store, with an average rating of 4/5 stars.
As with all other iPod games from the iTunes Store, The Sims Bowling costs $4.99 and only works on fifth-generation iPods with iPod Software 1.2 or later.
