- JP Morgan retracts. Now says "No" to near term "Nano" iPhone
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Apple Financial, iPhone
JP Morgan has just issued a note retracting Kevin Chang's earlier projection about a near term iPhone Nano. The new report says that the majority of Chang's assumptions appear to have come from a review of the patent that was published last week, adding that a near-term launch of an iPhone-nano product would be "unusual and highly risky". TUAW brings you the entire report in this exclusive online gallery.

Here's a nice way to recover notes from your iPhone without having to mail them to yourself--although it's not for the faint of heart. James Duncan Davidson located where iTunes stores its iPhone backup data--at least mostly. There's an error in his write-up. It's actually stored in your home folder's application support directory in MobileSync/Backup. For me, that works out to be /Users/ericasadun/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup. But getting back to Duncan Davidson's story, he took a peek at those files and noticed they were some sort of compressed SQLite3 files.
Following on that, "Mr. Flip", who is one of the iPhone web developer Google group members posted this simple extraction utility written in Perl. When run, it converts each of the backup files to a normal well-named SQLite3 db file. Following Flip's directions, I then downloaded a copy of the OS X version of SQLite Browser from Sourceforge and used it to view the contents of the backup db files.
Interestingly enough, when viewing the db files directly from the command line (via sqlite3 notes_01.db and .dump) I discovered that the iPhone saved my entire history of edits for my note files as well as the actual final content.

The long awaited GameTap client for the Mac is out (direct download right here), and our (newly redesigned) sister site for all things gaming Joystiq put together this video (complete with music from "Psycho Mother$*#^ing Soldier"), along with a pictoral preview of what you can expect when you download and install.
According to Joystiq, the Transgaming setup works very well-- they even found an Xbox 360 controller driver to use with it, and the client brought them right into OS X arcade gaming heaven. There are apparently some games you can play for free, but most games will require a subscription; we're told it's 99 cents for the first month, and it'll be about $7 to $10 a month after that, depending on how often you pay. This client is actually the "Lite" version-- GameTap says the deluxe version is coming later this year which will offer full screen gameplay, the ability to download more games while playing, and "a richer game environment," whatever that means. What are you waiting for? Download that sucker and go psycho, solider!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

According to Forbes, Apple stock is up based on today's rumors of an iPhone nano. We here at TUAW have heard this latest rumor, we're just not freaked out about it. As far as we can tell, all this furor is based around a single Apple patent that was speculated upon by J.P. Morgan analyst Kevin Chang. And right now as far as we can tell, while the news-o-sphere (the traditional media equivalent of the blogosphere) is going crazy on this unsubstantiated suggestion, there aren't any facts backing it up.Yes, Apple will probably follow on to the iPhone--that's kind of a given. And yes, the next iPhone may be cheaper. But since the existing iPhone is already nano-esque in that it is flash-based with only 4 or 8 GB of memory, it's hard to see where speculation about a second iPhone that's nano-esque and possibly slightly cheaper is actually all that, you know, newsworthy.

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/07/10/iphone-nano-rumors/#comments - Rumor: iPhones in the UK
A little birdie just flew into TUAW headquarters with a bit of news. It seems that the birdie's "friend" has seen an iPhone in the UK, running on the O2 network. Last we knew, a carrier had not been officially identified in the UK.
Back in March, it was rumored that Apple was in serious talks with Vodaphone. Just three months later, it appeared that O2 pulled the carpet out from under Vodaphone.
Then, just a week ago, O2 told the press that they do not have a contract with Apple. This is getting exhausting.
Now we hear that an O2-powered iPhone was seen in the wild. We can't substantiate any of this, of course, but Steve was recently in London.
This is a rumor, folks, but let the speculation begin.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Software, Freeware, Open Source
Everyone loves AppZapper for removing unwanted applications, and while many have called for something like it to be included in future versions of OS X, AppTrap comes closer to replicating the Mac simplicity we all enjoy so much. Expanding on the drag-and-drop workflow used to install programs, simply drag the unused application to the trash, and AppTrap pops up asking if you'd also like to delete any associated files.
AppTrap is free, open source, and installed as a system preference pane.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
