  • Read/Write Web wonders how Apple can win the PC battle

One phrase that sums up the American spirit is, 'If you're so smart, why aren't you rich?' While this phrase mistakenly equates intelligence with business acumen, it is still a powerful statement that seems to resonate with people. This phrase was brought to my mind thanks to this post over on Read/Write Web, which is a great blog all about webapps and the like, dealing with Apple's market-share. The thesis of the post seems to be, 'if Macs are so great, why isn't everyone using them?' It is true the post isn't as combative as that turn of phrase might suggest, but nonetheless it is a good summary of the post's main thrust.

The first half of the post deals with the rise of Apple, the cool new hardware and the software that powers it, not to mention the powerhouse that is the iPod. Given these data points, and the fact that Apple's market-share is rising, is it possible to assume that Apple will win the PC battle?

Read/Write lists some ways they think Apple will be able to win this battle. They trot out the old chestnut that Macs are more expensive than PCs. It is true you can get a PC for less dough than you can a Mac but that is really comparing Apples to cheap, crappy Oranges. It has been well established that a PC with the same feature set of a Mac will cost about the same, or slightly more...

  • Two 'casual' games coming soon via Aspyr Media

    Filed under:

Aspyr Media recently announced the upcoming release of two so-called "casual" games for Mac OS X 10.3.9 (and up): Virtual Villagers and Travelogue 360: Paris, both created by Big Fish Games. These two titles are set to ship in August for $30 each.

Virtual Villagers is a real-time strategy game in which players must guide villagers in rebuilding their land after a volcanic eruption. Travelogue 360: Paris is a simplistic puzzle game in which players must find hidden objects in multiple locales of Paris, France, and the game includes two different gameplay modes. Although these might not shake up the Mac game scene, it's nice to see some new titles coming soon via Aspyr.

  • Those YouTube videos on your iPhone might be illegal

Content creators have a right to make money from what they produce, I don't think anyone argues that. As a content creator myself I feel for those that have their copyrights infringed, though I think that only happens because the big media companies are afraid of digital distribution and treat their customers like criminals.

Anyway, the latest copyright infringement story has just popped up over on NewsBlog. It would seem that some of Bob Tur's work has been illegally uploaded to YouTube, and he isn't happy. He has filed suit against YouTube already, but now he thinks he has a case against Apple. Why? Because the YouTube app on the iPhone plays his copyrighted material (please, no one tell him about the AppleTV, Macs, or PCs, all of which can play YouTube content too. He might start going after everyone with a net connection and access to YouTube).

Bob is 'disappointed' in Apple for creating an app capable of distributing copyrighted material and thinks he can name Apple as a secondary copyright infringer. Now, I'm no lawyer but this is just dumb (that's the technical term, I think). It is like suing Sony because their TVs and DVD players allow me to watch a bootleged DVD (not that I would do that). Here's hoping Mr. Tur comes to his senses and doesn't clog an already overworked legal system with ridiculous cases.

  • Mac 101: Reset your Mac OS X password

We've all done this.* It's time to install something or run Software Update, but first we've got to enter our password. What was it again? Oops.

You can reset your password with the CD (or DVD) that came with your Mac, but if you don't have it, try this tip from Hackszine. Restart your machine while holding down the Command Key (or "Apple Key") and the "S" key. This will start your Mac up in "Single User Mode."

Now it's command line time.** Don't worry, it's just three lines:
    • #sh /etc/rc
    • #passwd yourusername
    • #reboot
Ta-dah! You may return to what you were originally doing. Just write that new password down first.

*Well, not us, but, you know...our "friend."

    [Via Lifehacker]

**Update: this post has raised some understandable security concerns among our readers. Our own Mike Rose had this to say:

"Not this caveat, from a commenter at Hackazine: if you have a FileVault-protected home directory, you cannot use this hack. Changing your password from the command line will render your home directory completely inaccessible, probably permanently."
