  • Shopper picks up iPhone AND $800US

Here's the story. This kid in Texas arrives at his local AT&T store at 6:00 AM on Friday the 29th to buy an iPhone. His effort pays off as he finds himself in 1st place.

Almost 12 hours later, a woman shows up with $16,000US in cash. Mark - the 1st place squatter - sells her his spot for $800US. Her intention was to buy a slew of phones and sell them all on Ebay. Apparantly, she was unaware of the "1 per customer" rule, and left with a single phone that ended up costing her $1400 (before activation).

As for Mark, he eventually got a phone of his own plus a mountain of accessories. Why not, right?

The moral of the story: Some people are lucky, some people are dumb. We'll let you work out which is which.

    Thanks, Marco!

  • iBooklet server

How we love enterprising geeks. "This machine isn't dead," they say, "it's prepped for re-purposing!"

Thus was Jonas' thought process (maybe not verbatim) when he came across this 500mhz G3 ibook with a busted display. Other than the screen, the computer functioned perfectly, making it a good server candidate.

He removed the display, optical drive and battery. Next he whittled the case down to the bare minimum that would contain the remaining parts. Finally, he went to a used book store and found a hardcover book that was slightly larger than the resized laptop and cut out all of the pages.

He then used some plastic and velcro to secure the 'book in the book, put it on the shelf and the iBooklet server was born. He claims that there have been no heat issues. Still, I wouldn't go to sleep with that thing running.

  • AppleCare for iPhone details confirmed

    Filed under:

Rumors were floating around earlier this week about AppleCare for iPhone. Now, reader Kender points out the official information from Apple:
    • AppleCare for iPhone will be available "...in July"
    • Your hardware coverage will be extended for up to 2 years
    • Customers will be provided with a loaner iPhone if theirs is out for repairs (after a $29US "rental fee")
They also list the specifics of the rental unit (you can transfer your data to it and an 8GB phone will get you an 8GB loaner) and exactly what type of things will void your warranty. The only thing missing is the cost of the program, though $60US has been suggested.

    Thanks, Kender!

  • iPhone: The Musical

    David. Pogue. Is. Awesome.

Aside from the obvious reasons -- creator of the "Missing Manual" book series, New York Times Circuits columnist, all-around-great guy -- he does one thing no other tech pundit can pull off: he parodies well-known songs and turns them into tech classics. He usually debuts a new one every year at Macworld, and each year they get better and better.

And Pogue's done it again, this time creating an original music video called "iPhone: The Musical" about the drudgery of owning a Phone of Yesteryear, longing for an iPhone, and finally making the glorious purchase. Both the song and video -- some of it recorded with guest singers at the Apple Store Fifth Avenue iPhone launch -- are incredibly clever and humorous, and definitely worth a watch.

You can also check out some of Pogue's older song parodies at his website.

  • Telekinesis puts your Mac desktop onto your iPhone

    Filed under:

Talk about cool. Alan Quatermain read about Telekinesis over at Daring Fireball and tipped me about it. It's a new OS X program from the creator of QuickSilver that serves your computer up as webpages. Load the iPhone remote software onto your Mac and you can use your iPhone to access your camera, your files, and even see your screen. It's new and just a wee bit buggy ("Really. Alpha. Don't expect it to be pretty. Or work.") but it already shows great promise. The screen shot here is off my Mac, but the same functions are available directly on the iPhone.

Unfortunately, my Macs are so firewalled up that I can only use it in my house, but it worked well during my limited tests using my in-home network. This is probably a good time to re-check out a service like No-IP.

    Thanks to Alan Quatermain.

  • iPhone supply being replenished

This morning's reports found all but two US Apple Stores were out of iPhones. TUAW reader Jim tipped us off that his local store - Seattle's University Village - received a fresh shipment this morning. Now he's the owner of a shiny 8GB model. Lucky.

So, has anyone else noticed that their local supply is being replenished? Let us know.

And just in case you were wondering, Apple Store Shadyside (Pittsburgh) and Bridgeport Village (Portland area) are the two that failed to sell out.

    Thanks, Jim!

  • TUAW Tips: iPhone Safari Navigation Tricks

The iPhone offers some delightful navigation tricks in Safari. Here are a few of my favorites for you to enjoy and to use while scrolling though webpages:

Page down. When not using a zoomed-in display, double-tap towards the bottom of the screen. The page will re-center around your tap. Make sure not to tap a link!

Jump to the top. Double-tap the very top of the screen, just below the time display to pop back to the top of the page. (Thanks John C)

Zoom onto a single picture. Double-tapping images in Safari zooms them to fit your iPhone display. If the picture is linked to a URL, this can prove a little tricky but it works great for non-linked images. Double-tap again to return to the unzoomed display.

Zoom a column. You can zoom text columns as well as pictures. Double-tap on the column to fit it to the display. Double-tap again to return out of the zoom. Not only does Safari zoom block-quoted text independently of regular text but if you move your finger after the first double-tap-to-fit, it interprets the next double-tap as a re-center page command rather than a return-to-previous-zoom. Smart.

Stopping a scroll. After flicking a page to get it to scroll, you can tap the page at any time to stop that movement. Don't forget, you can also manually drag the screen display to reset the part you're viewing.

Manual zoom. This is probably one of the most-advertised Safari features (along with the flip-the-phone-on-its-side-trick) but it's worth mentioning again. To zoom into a Safari page, put your thumb and forefinger on the screen and move them apart. To zoom out, pinch the fingers together after starting with them apart.

Examining the URL. To peek at a link's destination, touch and hold the link for a few seconds. You can also do this with images to see if they are linked. If a link appears and you don't want to activate it, just slide your finger away until the destination text disappears.

Got some more tricks to add? Let us know in the comments.

  • Rumor: Apple patent points to "iPhone nano?"

Now this is interesting. Apple applied for a patent today that depicts an iPod-looking device with a simple clickwheel that displays numbers...much like an old rotary phone. Could it be a low-cost sibling for the iPhone?

This is all speculation, of course, but Apple does offer both a high end and a low end iPod; would a basic companion to the iPhone not make sense? Some users just want to make and receive calls, and couldn't be bothered with all that hoity-toity "internet" stuff.

    Thanks, Chris!

  • 6 Things You Need to Know About iPhone SMS

    Filed under:

RU big n2 texting? Chek these 6 tips u need to no FTW. TUAW hopes they will help joo wid iphone txting. NP, our pleasure noob, newb or no.

    1. Don't sign up for extra texts during activation. (See update) The default SMS-add-ons are expensive and limited. If you did sign up for them then call up AT&T, cancel the add on and request this $5 all-you-can eat unlimited messaging plan instead. TUAW reader Leo signed up and reports the $5 plan is indeed iPhone compatible--at least with the postpaid (normal) phone plan. Be persistent. The AT&T rep may have to search around to find the right plan. Ask for the option that adds unlimited mobile-to-mobile text messaging for $5 per month. Read more about this option at the Howard Forums. Remember, the mobile-to-mobile texts do not include Google SMS, AIM Mobile, Facebook or any other non-cellphone texts. If you use those services, you still might get charged per message. (Update: This unlimited plan may be limited only to other AT&T phones--in which case, you may want to just sign up for the normal messaging plans.) Update 2: According to a post at the MacRumor forums, you can add both that unlimited in-network messaging and 200 additional SMS msgs for $5/month.

    2. You can send text messages to an iPhone by e-mail. Yeah, yeah, a lot of you already know about this. But many of our readers do not. And for you guys, here's how to do it: send your text message to phonenumber@cingularme.com (e.g. 7035551212@cingularme.com, just use the numbers, no hyphens, etc). Keep your message brief. Both the subject line and the message arrive on the iPhone.

    3. It costs USD $0.15 to send and receive texts on an iPhone when using a prepaid plan. The money comes out of your account balance. If you're paying, say, 10 cents a minute, then a text would cost you one and a half minutes. Adjust the math according to your specific plan. (Mine is $0.15/minute, so one text is one minute.) This does not apply if you've added the $5/month all-you-can-eat text plan.

    4. If you're on a limited prepaid plan, you'll receive a notification after each and every text. Yup, every single text you receive, every single text you send will cause the iPhone to display a message along the lines of "Your last transaction cost 0.15 USD. Your account balance is (whatever) USD". You must tap "Dismiss" every time. What a complete pain. Worse, at least in my experience, you have to dismiss this message before viewing the actual text you just received. AT&T says this is a feature, not a bug: "Your updated balance will be sent to your phone automatically after every call. you can also dial *777# at any time to see your current balance." I've tried this and it works.

    5. All the Google SMS services work I'm not entirely sure why you'd want to use Google SMS but I tested it out and it certainly works. I texted fish tacos 80224 to Google and it replied with several local fish taco restaurants. Convenient when you're out of WiFi range and Safari with EDGE is responding too slowly.

    6. SMS is not email SMS is limited to 160 characters per message. You can find any number of SMS FAQs via a Google search.

kthxbai Leo, Jordan Golson, and Brian Rose and everyone else who tipped us off about message features and annoyances.

  • Rumor: iLife '07 ready to go

According to MacScoop, "sources" have stated that the next release of Apple's iLife suite has gone gold master. In fact, if they're to be believed, it could be released before Leopard in October.

Macworld '07 came and went without even a mention of iLife. January became February, and now here we are in July with no official word from Apple. Some have speculated that iLife will be a part of the OS from here on out, and no longer as a stand alone purchase. MacScoop contradicts that theory by saying that iLife could ship this summer.

Of course, rumors are just that. In the end, we aren't any closer to iPhoto '07 than we were yesterday.

  • Universal does not renew iTunes contract

The Universal Music Group has told Macworld.uk that they have, in fact, not renewed their long term iTunes store contract. Universal has decided to continue showcasing their music in iTunes 'at will,' meaning that at any time they can pull their music from Apple's download service.

Why would Universal do this? Considering that almost 1 out of every 3 CDs sold comes from Universal, I am sure they want to show their might and put Apple in its place. Will they abandon the iTunes Store? I doubt it, since they make lots of money off of it (though not as much as they would like, but isn't that always the case with the music companies?). This does mean that Universal might make certain music available from other retailers exclusively, something they couldn't do under their other contract with Apple.

  • O2 may not be aboard the iPhone train

    Filed under:

According to this Dutch-language report, O2 says it does not have an iPhone contract with Apple to distribute the iPhone in England The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland not including her overseas territories. A spokesman denied signing a contract and would not discuss any ongoing negotiations. This contradicts earlier reports that O2 would provide exclusive iPhone service in the UK. Rumors are flying regarding European iPhone distribution deals but there is still no official word about anything yet over at the Apple PR site.

    Thanks, Habbie.

  • TUAW Tip: iPhone "Will" Contractions

I kept running into this: I wanted to type contractions like "he'll" or "we'll," but they were a hassle: without the apostrophe, they're both words on their own, so the keyboard software wouldn't recommend the contraction. I'd have to click the punctuation button, then hit the apostrophe to form the right word.

But nope, there's a better way: simply add a third "l." Type "helll," and the keyboard software will recommend "he'll." Type "welll," and the keyboard software will recommend "we'll."

    Sweet.

[Update:] This also works with "were" and "we're." Type an extra "e" ("weree") and the software recommends "we're."
