- Is a Microsoft/EMI deal on the horizon?
Now that Apple has penned a deal to open up EMI songs, will Microsoft be next? The Times Online writes that Microsoft has hinted that it may follow the Apple model and sell EMI songs at Zune Marketplace without DRM. No deals are signed or announced yet, but an EMI spokesman said that negotiations with non-Apple vendors are ongoing. As I've posted before, I think that the Apple/EMI deal is the first chink in the ship that will sink DRM use. Just like all those late and unlamented software copy protection schemes of the 1980's, DRM may soon be a historical footnote. Only time will tell, but I suspect that the iTunes DRM-free option will encourage a new wave of purchasers that have previously spurned the store due to DRM concerns.

So you've set up your Apple TV, and now you want to extend your available content beyond the iTunes Store. Aside from ripping your own DVD's, what can you do?
Check out HungryFlix. They distribute independent films specifically formatted for the Apple TV (iPod versions are available as well), and their collection ranges from shorts to full length features, across a number of genres. Most of the films are only a few dollars to purchase, and you can even sell your work to HungryFlix if you're on the other side of the camera.
If you've got an Apple TV and indies are your thing, check out HungryFlix.

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, iPod Family
Think about this. What if Microsoft gave Zunes away, the same way phone companies give away cell phones, and collected their money from the Zune Pass all-you-can-eat subscription program instead? You'd sign up for a one- or two-year contract for the service and get the hardware thrown in. That's the idea posted over at Wired where Jason Reindorp, marketing director for Zune, is basically quoted saying it's an idea that Microsoft has been kicking around.Could a cheaper-made (perhaps flash-based) Zune swing the deal? Would it put Zune on a footing to compete with the iPod monolith? It certainly opens new possibilities.

Wow, as if there weren't enough reason to carry around your iPod, Kevin Garrad of the 3rd Infantry Division has evidence that an iPod can save your life. Apparently, he had the iPod in his outside pocket when he was shot with an AK-47; the iPod seems to have slowed down the bullet enough to prevent it from penetrating his body armor. Flickr user tikigod, who posted the image, says that it has been seen inside Apple, and they're working on getting Kevin a replacement.

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/04/05/flickr-find-ipod-armor-edition/#comments - TinyURL Service
Filed under: Cool tools, Productivity, Freeware
Over at Hawk Wings, Tim Gaden points to the TinyURL Service by Rachel Blackman. Once installed (which annoyingly requires a restart), this Service allows you to create a TinyURL simply by selecting the URL (e.g. in the address bar of your browser) and invoking the Service (either through the Services Menu, with the global hotkey, or with Quicksilver). This saves some steps compared to using TinyURL's bookmarklet. Tim draws attention to this because using TinyURL is one of the workarounds for dealing Mail.app's unfortunate tendency to break links in emails sent from it. Instead of dragging the URL from your browser, just select it and invoke "Shrink URL," and the appropriate TinyURL will appear in your address bar for dragging and dropping. Another ready constituency for the Service is the whole mob of Twitter fanatics, of which you can include us here at TUAW.
Rachel's TinyURL Service is a free download from Riverdark Studios.

Update: In the comments below, Sparks (i.e. Rachel) notes that she has addressed some of the concerns with her first version and has a new version that can Shrink the URL to the clipboard. It can be downloaded from her site here (zip).Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
