  • Sell on iTunes with TuneCore

    Have you ever considered selling your own music on iTunes? A service called TuneCore makes that possible. You pay a small charge to deliver your album to iTunes plus a yearly fee. If people start buying your tunes, you earn $0.70 per track.

    So let's say you create an album with 8 tracks. You pay $0.99 per track upload plus another $0.99 for the album listing, and $9.98 for the first year album fee. That works out to--scratches head--8 x $0.99 + 1 x $0.99 + $9.98 = $18.89 to upload and store that 8-track album. After the first year, you continue to pay $9.98 per year per album. That album would start earning money for you after the first 26-or-so sales, if I did the math right which is always questionable.

    So what does selling through iTunes get you? First of all, nearly anyone who doesn't use Linux can use iTunes to buy your tracks, so your product is pretty accessible. Second, I'm guessing that TuneCore takes care of a lot of the accounting issues, so you just upload and you're done until you start earning money--if you start earning money.

    Obviously, you'd have to take care of your own marketing, but this would make a great way to distribute material for non-profits like schools for audio-only material. This of course, assumes, that TuneCore ends up being reliable and trustworthy. TuneCore offers a complete FAQ of their service here.

  • Complete-my-Album FAQ

    No Virginia, free iTunes Singles-of-the-Week and Discover-Downloads will not make it cheaper to purchase entire albums. And you only have a limited time, about six months, to complete each album after you purchase any track. These, and other fun Complete-my-Album FAQs, can be found at Apple's new FAQ document, recently posted.

    And what happens when you've purchased so many tracks that your final complete-the-album purchase price is less than the cost of a single track? You're out of luck. You can't complete an album that you've already paid that much for.

    Plus complete-my-TV-season isn't available. Bummer.

They'll walk you through Garage Band's somewhat daunting interface and teach you the basics you need to know.

  • Apple adds Xvid to QT Components site

    Our own David just texted us to let us know that Apple has added Xvid to its online QuickTime Components list. The Xvid-for-QuickTime component, which you can download here, allows you to play and encode Xvid video. As the writeup mentions, Xvid follows the MPEG-4 standard.

  • New Apple Patents

    MacNN reports on the latest Apple patents, published today by the US Patent & Trademark Office. The new patents include a centralized printing queue, a variable-sized icon GUI, a thermal-contact arrangement between chips and heat sinks, and an audio battery status patent. This last may provide audible status information for the upcoming iPhone. If reading about patents is your thing head on over and check these out. MacNN provides links to the actual patent filings.

    It always surprises me that certain things that seem fairly brainless and obvious like "monitor a device condition, obtain an audio snippet based on the device condition, output the audio snippet" are patentable, but I am not a lawyer.

  • AP disses Apple TV

    Peter Svensson of the Associated Press likes the look of Apple TV as a gadget but declared that its video output came up short. "It's as if Apple had introduced an iPod that sounded like a cassette player," he writes. Svensson downloaded a copy of Pirates of the Caribbean from iTunes and declared it "barely watchable".

    The article is a bit hazy about testing details, but I'm pretty sure Svensson neither tried watching any High Def content on Apple TV nor did he compare the same data files on both units. Should he blame Apple TV hardware when iTunes compression might have been at fault for his viewing experience? Perhaps a little. Given the tight bond between Apple TV and iTunes, Apple does have to stand behind its current library of video data.

  • TinyURL Service

    Over at Hawk Wings, Tim Gaden points to the TinyURL Service by Rachel Blackman. Once installed (which annoyingly requires a restart), this Service allows you to create a TinyURL simply by selecting the URL (e.g. in the address bar of your browser) and invoking the Service (either through the Services Menu, with the global hotkey, or with Quicksilver). This saves some steps compared to using TinyURL's bookmarklet. Tim draws attention to this because using TinyURL is one of the workarounds for dealing Mail.app's unfortunate tendency to break links in emails sent from it. Instead of dragging the URL from your browser, just select it and invoke "Shrink URL," and the appropriate TinyURL will appear in your address bar for dragging and dropping. Another ready constituency for the Service is the whole mob of Twitter fanatics, of which you can include us here at TUAW.

  • Canada's only GSM carrier shakey on iPhone

    Hang on, Canada, it looks like Rogers Wireless is in a snit.

    The iPhone is a GSM phone, and all Canadian providers - except one - use the CDMA standard. The lone GSM provider is Rogers Wireless, which makes them the only Canadian company that can possibly support the iPhone. This past Tuesday, Rogers made a point of telling CBC News Online that they had not announced their intentions to carry the iPhone.

    Note that Rogers didn't say they won't carry the iPhone at all, they just aren't prepared to say that they will. Perhaps the don't want to expose their plan too early, or maybe last-minute negotiations are ongoing.

    In any case, we've got our fingers crossed for all of our Apple-loving neighbors to the north.

  • Ironcoder V results

    Ironcoder is a Mac software developer competition inspired by the cult Japanese television cooking show Iron Chef in which Mac developers have about a weekend to produce a cool piece of software based on a particular API and theme. The latest contest was Ironcoder V and featured the ScreenSaver.framework API with the theme "Life." The results are in, and the winner this time around is Ben Gottlieb, whose winning entry, WikiPath, displays a series of Wikipedia pages by following a random path (though the links) beginning from the Wikipedia entry on Life. The results page offers the winning entry plus several runners up for free download.

  • Apple extends Best Buy program

    About a year ago, there was a single Mac mini set up in my local Best Buy. It quietly disappeared, and I wondered if Apple was giving up on Best Buy. Today, I got my answer: No.

    According to an article at MacNN, the Apple/Best Buy retail venture will grow to 200 stores in 2007, up from the current count of 50. That's great and all, but let's hope that the staff at these extra 150 stores aren't as blatantly anti-Mac as the employees I've encountered. I've actually seen staff steer interested shoppers away from the mini and towards some hulking PC. I only hope they bought virus protection software as well.
