- Spyshot: Apple Store San Luis Obispo
How we love our eagle-eyed TUAW operatives across the globe! This time, Earnest comes through with this shot of an Apple Store under construction in beautiful San Luis Obispo, California. A quick glance at Apple's jobs page revealed that sales positions are still available for this location.
Keep your eyes peeled, TUAWers, and let us know what you find!
Thanks, Ernest!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

We know what you're thinking, "All right, TUAW! Enough with the GTD posts already!" Hey, it's currently the "It" cottage industry, and some folks are writing some nice software.
Midnight Inbox is an application meant to enable users to follow the GTD methodology easily on their Macs. All of the "steps" of the process are represented by a very nice UI. The app's main window is a bit large, but can be minimized if you don't mind a good deal of scrolling.
This week version 1.1 was released. Changes include:
- SQL format data storage
- iCal synchronization for external devices
- Documentation in OS X's help menu
- A new archive feature

Razer announced the pending availability of their Pro|Type keyboard back in August. Honestly, we were wondering it was ever going to ship, and how much it would cost. Now we finally know.
This week, Razer announced that their battleship-sized keyboard will cost $130US and begin shipping today, April 6th. The Pro|Type keyboard features in integrated iPod dock, two USB ports, 10 programmable keys, media keys and 10 available "profiles," which we assume are for multiple users. If you're a real keyboard jockey with a yen for customization, this keyboard is for you.

You know those logos that appear in the corner of your TV, overlaying your TV shows? It isn't hard to create the same effect using an image editor like Photoshop and the hidden features of QuickTime Pro. In this, the first of two how-to galleries, you'll see how to prepare an overlay using your favorite photo editor. You need to make the overlay the same size as your destination video, and you need to take advantage of your editor's "alpha" transparency features to create a translucent logo that will overlay your video.

Filed under: Video, iTunes, Apple TV
The Internet Archive offers many treats to its visitors. These range from the WaybackMachine web page archive to a 38-thousand-plus live concert recordings collection to its nearly 200,000 eTexts, and that doesn't even touch videos. Archive.org's Moving Image archive is chock full of video already compressed to MP4 that you can load to your iTunes library and sync to your Apple TV without any further conversion or data massaging.Yes, sure, the quality isn't great--but it's free, it's historical and a lot of the material is just plain fun. Expect a data rate around 350 kbps (more or less) and you won't be too disappointed by the results. For comparison, consider that a standard iTunes video runs at 1500-2000 kbps and a new High Def Apple TV video runs at closer to 4000 kbps.
Animations like Betty Boop, Looney Tunes and Felix the Cat are plentiful. Other standout items include old timey newsreel fodder and full-length features like My Man Godfrey.

Filed under: iPod Family, Multimedia, Video
Hammacher Schlemmer is now offering The Portable Video iPod Enlarger And DVD Player.. The device has a 7" widescreen 480 x 234 display that can show video content either from an iPod docked into the back or from the built-in DVD player. While the screen resolution seems pretty low to me (and the name rather questionable), this might be worth a look if you were in the market for a portable DVD player anyway. However, the measly 2.5 hours of battery life is rather disappointing. It's available now for $249.95.

You may recall that a while back we told you about Wing Commander Saga, a fan-made extension to the Wing Commander universe using the open-sourced Freespace 2 engine. Now some similarly avid B*G fans are putting together another Freespace 2 powered game set in the (new) Battlestar Galactica universe called Beyond the Red Line. A demo has already been released that allows you to take on the role of a "nugget" Viper pilot aboard the Battlestar Pegasus. The voice-acting is actually quite a bit better than in WCS, and the artwork really does feel like it's from the show. There's even the option for online multi-player. Unfortunately, there are also some graphical glitches with bitmaps (as there were with WCS), and the Freespace 2 engine is becoming somewhat dated. Nonetheless, if you've ever wanted a crack at the Cylons, here's your chance.
A demo for Beyond the Red Line is available as a free download (for Mac, Windows, and Linux).

Filed under: Education, Freeware, Open Source
The folks over at MacResearch point to the Magic Number Machine, a nice open source scientific calculator from Matt Gallagher. It has a lot of what you would naturally expect from a good handheld calculator, but also some Mac specific features like the ability to change the insertion point by clicking on the display, keyboard shortcuts, and a slide out drawer for your "expression history." If you're in need of a scientific calculator a bit more powerful than Apple's built-in application, but don't want to shell out $19 for PCalc, then the Magic Number Machine looks like a good choice (even if it's not quite as stylish as some of the other options and doesn't do RPN).
The Magic Number Machine is a free download from Matt's website and includes the source. (Note: when I tried to mount the DMG it gave me a warning, but I ignored it was able to mount it and install the application without any problems).

Author Nils Werkmeister (great name!) writes in to tell us about his QuickPack, a Quicksilver Action that makes it very easy to add entries to a page on 37Signals' Backpack online organizational tool. We've mentioned a number of Backpack tools in the past, including various widgets and Packrat, but Nils' solution has the nearly insuperable advantage of integrating so well with TUAW's favorite utility: Quicksilver. After entering text mode in Quicksilver (generally with a period) you're able quickly to insert calendar entries, ToDos, notes, and reminders to any of your Backpack pages by prefixing your entry with one of the various supported tags (e.g. "+todo" and "+note"; see the QuickPack page for full details). Once you select the QuickPack action it will bring up another dialog box asking on which page you want your new entry placed.Continue reading QuickPack: Quicksilver plus Backpack

So there's this company, Kaspersky, and they say they've discovered the first iPod virus[1]. Oh dear! Everyone panic, alarums and excursions, and all that, right? Not.This is about Podloso a proof-of-concept virus that infects iPods (rather than using iPods as a distribution mechanism). And it goes like this: First, you have to install Linux on your iPod. Next, you have to install the virus to your Linux-capable iPod. Then you have to launch the virus, because "Podloso cannot be launched automatically without user involvement". Once launched, it infects all executable .elf files with a lame message.
So here's TUAW take on the matter: if you own an iPod and you run Linux on it? Don't install the virus, 'kay?
[Via TechDirt][1]They're not counting the Windows virus that accidently hitched a ride on some otherwise innocent 5.5G iPods.
