- Finder Window Manager
Complaining about the Finder is a favorite pastime of Mac users, and one of the biggest annoyances has always been that it won't remember window placement and view settings. Well for the OCD set, Finder Window Manager may be just what the doctor ordered (as a supplement for the Prozac). This simple utility allows you "to save and restore your window placement and view options via Window Sets." You can have different Window Sets for different purposes (e.g. different projects, etc.). Just arrange the Finder windows as you'd like them and take a snapshot by creating a Window Set; later you can easily restore these settings through the menubar item (right). There are also a bunch of window management options in the Utilities submenu, such as stacking and tiling, etc.
Finder Window Manager is $15 and a demo is available.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Freeware, Internet Tools, Open Source, Beta Beat
The concept behind Googalyzer is interesting, though it's probably not for everyone. It's basically an open-source, tabbed web browser with built-in note-taking, web-clipping, outlining and bibliographic tools. The idea is to consolidate these different aspects of web research into one application. This way you can have multiple research projects with all the relevant information kept in one place, without getting data from different project intermingled (this reminds me of the thinking behind Panic's recent Coda web design application). If you do a lot of research online, and are not already using something like DEVONthink, this might be worth a look.
Googalyzer 3.0 beta 1 has just recently been released and is a free download from Funkware.

Here's a simple trick to help you locate items from your Dock in Finder. Sure, you can Control-click (or Right-click) and item and choose Show In Finder from the contextual pop-up menu, but it's a lot easier simply to hold down the Command key and click the Dock item. (That's a left click for dual-button mice.)Command-clicking a Docked application or file automatically opens up a new Finder window showing the item in its folder. Say you stick a folder into your dock and you drop items into it throughout the day. By command-clicking that folder at the end of the day, you can immediately revisit that folder and review all the items you've added. Which probably saves you a microsecond over double-clicking the thing. I'm pretty sure you TUAW readers can come up with an even better example!

Is the iPhone slippery? Will it drop out of your hands during use, crashing to the floor below and destroying your expensive purchase? That's the question raised over on Digg, which linked up this story about slippery iPhones. The story quotes Alexandrous Roussos, who wrote "the material used on the device's case makes it feel even more slippery than the iPod and will probably require the purchase of a protective skin or case so as to avoid unintentionally dropping it".Immediately the blogosphere split into two factions, debating whether the iPhone was in fact slippery or not. MyiPhone's Chris Barr writes that according to Brian Lam, an actual iPhone holder and toucher, the iPhone is not slippery at all. Wired reports that the iPhone might slip out of your hand.
Me? If I get an iPhone, I'm buying a case for it--just like I bought one for my iPod and my cell phone.

Filed under: Humor, iPod Family, Flickr Find
Those ZoomSystems iPod vending machines that we once gently mocked are both more successful and more ubiquitous than we thought they'd be. Still, it seems they aren't flawless. Reader & iPod shopper Kristopher decided to give one of the machines at his local mall a try; unfortunately, as soon as he started using the touchscreen, a familiar error screen appeared, and then... well, you can see what's underneath the pretty surface.
[That's a joke, in case our visitors from Digg are confused. While there are plenty of Point Of Sale systems for the Mac, I don't actually know of one that's intended for vending-machine deployment, and even a Mac Mini is a bit high-end for the build cost of vending machines. That aside, it's probably not the best call to go with XP for a vend setup either...]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Last week, Apple announced that Europe would see the iPhone in Q4 2007. Today, Gregory Ng of iPhone Matters writes that there is mounting evidence for a 3G European version of the iPhone. Pointing to an iPhone FAQ post, he suggests that a non-3G release would hinder the international success of the iPhone; 3G is far more widespread in Europe than here. Ng believes that we may see two versions of the iPhone debut in Europe: both a GSM/EDGE version and a 3G version. So what do you European TUAW readers think? Could a 2.5G iPhone succeed? Does the iPhone need to be 3G?

Finishing up my interview series with notable Mac OS X developers is Allan Odgaard of Macromates, makers of the most excellent TextMate text and code manipulation app. Allan now joins Brent Simmons, Wil Shipley, Paul Kafasis and Gus Mueller in sharing some thoughts with us on the delay of Mac OS X Leopard, the iPhone and what it's like to develop on the bleeding edge.

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, iPhone
When it comes to Ballmer, it's usually best just lay his quotes right out there. So here it goes. "There's no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance. It's a $500 subsidized item. They may make a lot of money. But if you actually take a look at the 1.3 billion phones that get sold, I'd prefer to have our software in 60 percent or 70 percent or 80 percent of them, than I would to have 2 percent or 3 percent, which is what Apple might get."Of course, it's tempting to compare the iPhone to the iPod--also considered a boutique item when introduced--but the cell phone market is large and far better established than the digital media player was when the iPod debuted. Even if that market is crying out for innovation and new direction. I think the iPhone will easily outperform Ballmer's 2-3 percent over the next few years, but my crystal ball is hazy as to just how well it will do. What are your thoughts?

Filed under: Odds and ends, Steve Jobs
Last week, the California Supreme Court refused to hear Steve Jobs' request to demolish his house. The Jackling house is a large Spanish Colonial revival mansion built in 1926. A group of preservationists called "Uphold Our Heritage" want to prevent Jobs from tearing it down. They have established a website at friendsofthejacklinghouse.org.

Filed under: Freeware, Internet Tools, Open Source
John Gruber points to gSpell, a neat little OS X Service that leverages the power of Google as a spell checker. The author, Nathan Spindel, had the clever realization that Google's spelling suggestions are better than the built-in spell checker because their "sites generate insane amounts of statistical data regarding the world's most common spelling mistakes [searches] and their intended spellings [results clicked]." Using it is easy; just select the text and invoke gSpell through the Services menu or by keyboard shortcut.
gSpell apparently began as a programming exercise and is now available as a free download.
