  • Monocle: Web Search Tool

The just-released Monocle adds a simple little search box to your menubar, which by default supports Google, Wikipedia, Windows Live, and Yahoo. You can add other search engines just "by performing an example search inside a web browser window in Monocle". You can also define a Global Hotkey to bring up Monocle quickly. Personally, I much prefer Quicksilver for this sort of task, but I know some folks like good single use programs, so Monocle might be worth a look.

Monocle is a free download, but donations are requested.

  • Widget Watch: Volkswagen creates Dashboard and Yahoo! widgets

It's nice to see the widget train making its way across the land, and yesterday I noticed that Volkswagen of all companies has even hopped on board. The German car company has released a Rabbit Widget for both Dashboard and the Yahoo! Widgets Engine that lists free public events in over a dozen US cities.

The widget's design is obviously heavy on the revitalized Rabbit they seem to have replaced the Golf with; in fact, I can't find this widget anywhere else on VW's site besides the actual Rabbit page. On the right, the widget displays names of the events with small icons that help categorize said event (General Interest, Theatre, Music, etc.), and clicking on any event provides a brief description and links to more information.

At first a widget like this that helps promote a German car doesn't make much sense, but part of the Rabbit's marketing campaign is all about saving you money, so a free events widget then makes a bit more sense. Ultimately, it's a unique widget with a great design that's hocking quite a few events that some of you major city goers might not otherwise know about.

  • Hitch iPod2iPod USB Transfer Device

The Hitch iPod2iPod USB Transfer Device is an interesting little device for copying songs between two iPods without a computer in between. You just plug both iPods into the Hitch and you can "select and transfer songs, albums and videos between the two iPods" directly. The Hitch has a little LCD for selecting songs, and even runs a version of Linux, presumably opening up many cool hacking possibilities. In fact, the Hitch works with any two USB Mass Storage devices, like USB external hard drives or USB thumbdrives.

Now for the bad news: any FairPlay music will not play until after a sync (though unprotected files will play immediately), and worst of all "Hitch will only work between two iPods that have been initially configured under Windows OS," which is to say only on iPods that are formatted with FAT32 and not OS X's default HFS+.

  • Widget Watch: Abracadabra

    Filed under:

There are many ways to "hide" files on your Mac, and Dashboard Widget Abracadabra makes it drag-and-drop easy. Just grab the file you want hidden, invoke Dashboard and drop it onto the magic hat. Presto! It disappears from the Finder and Spotlight.

To retrieve your file, just flip the widget over and enter the password (you can even password protect this process, if you're super-paranoid). As tipster Lewis points out, it looks like this widget puts a "." in front of your filename to work its "magic."

    Thanks, Lewis!

  • Office 2004 11.3.4 patch out today

    Filed under:

The Microsoft Office 2004 11.3.4 updater is available for download, a quick-eyed reader tells us. The 12.5 MB download purports to provide "several enhancements to improve security and stability," including blocking some arbitrary execution security holes, but no more detail than that at the moment. The files updated by the patch are Word, the Junk Mail Filter, and the Component Plugin. Requires Office 11.3.3 and OS X 10.2.8 or higher.

    Thanks Dan!

  • NetNewsWire style: FeedLight

These NetNewsWire styles just keep getting better, especially since this one is designed for both NetNewsWire and Vienna. Not long ago I found a couple of really slick NNW styles, one of them taking a crack at a Spotlight look + headline wrapping, and now Brent Simmons via the Ranchero blog has highlighted FeedLight, a style based heavily on Mac OS X's Spotlight searchbar. While it bears resemblance to other Tiger styles available (including NNW's own built-in style), I really enjoy FeedLight's approach of displaying all the important data like a properly wrapping headline, feed, date and author in a concise, static top bar that remains in place (only on NNW, not Vienna) even as you scroll through a long article. Of course, the fact that it comes in two sexy gradient-ific versions, one for Aqua and another for Graphite, doesn't hurt either.

All FeedLight styles and versions are available from Alex at BrokenLogic.

  • More on Apple Store Boston

"It's not often that a retail construction project makes news..."

That's a quote from The Boston Globe regarding the Apple Store that's planned for Boston's Boylston Street. The store certainly has made news, as we've been writing about it for almost a year now. Apple had a hard time getting the design approved, and produced several revisions. Finally, it looks like it will be built this year. It looks stunning, and I think it'll be gorgeous directly across the street from The Prudential Building, one of the city's landmarks. I can't wait.

  • iTunes: Free Tuesday

Welcome to this week's edition of iTunes: Free Tuesday. This week, the word is "Borne". Their track "The Guide" is single of the week at the US iTunes Store, at iTunes Latino, in New Zealand, France and Australia. Pretty good marketing build-up for a single track, isn't that? Unfortunately, no free tracks yet over at Canada, the UK and the Japan store isn't updated yet.

    US Music

    US: The Guide by Borne
The four-piece known as Borne formed in 2003 in Australia and has spent the years since its inception honing its epic pop into something more precise, passionate, and unique. Cameron Tapp's vocals have an earnest, yearning quality that floats in the same airspace as Chris Martin or Bono, but has a rougher, more soulful edge. On "The Guide," the band turns a plaintive piano lament into an ecstatic array of guitar-lead bliss. The band originally sent us their demo a while back and we ended up featuring a track from them in our Australian store. The track was a phenomenal success. We think the band is something special and so now we're making this new track available free worldwide in order to get the word out. If you like the song, check out the group's album Loss of Signal, available exclusively on iTunes for a mere $5.99.

US: Can We Fall In Love Again by Darien Brockington
With a slick R&B style that rolls off the tongue with confidence, Darien Brockington is a bright reminder that John Legend has not completely written the book on fusing hip-hop and soul. The beat on "Can We Fall in Love Again" is a solid, easy-stepping groove that would make D'Angelo jealous, but it's Brockington's richly toned vocals that set this track apart. It's our free Discovery Download this week.
