  • Big News: Adium Hits the Big 1.0

After 4 years of hard work by almost 30 volunteers, instant messaging application Adium has finally reached version 1.0. The most significant update to the program in over a year and a half, the update brings with it a slew of new features, bug fixes, and added functionality. I've been using the 1.0 since it hit beta on July 4th of last year, and it is truly a treat to interact with. As for the new features, here's the shortlist:
    • Working Direct Connect and file transfer.
    • Global user profile and buddy icon.
    • Xtras manager.
    • Completely overhauled interface and icons.
    • Redesigned log viewer.
    • Major privacy enhancements.
    • Full changelog here.
Adium is open-source and available as a free download.

  • TUAW Podcast #20: Macworld Interview with Guy Kawasaki (Extended Remix)

Wow - you overwhelmingly asked for it, and here it is. I was blown away by the response to the 'TUAW edit' of my Guy Kawasaki interview, so the extended remix is ready for download. This one clocks in at over 55 minutes, so it should satisfy the fans of Guy in the crowd. It was an honor to speak with Mr. Kawasaki, and as you'll discover, we touched on so many more topics throughout the rest of the interview. We covered being a venture capitalist, Guy's surprising humility, what a car from Apple would be like, whether Guy bought a Wii, how he gets his blogging on and so much more. I was admittedly speechless at times around Guy, and I'm glad Laurie Duncan, who graciously came along to handle the recording aspects, was there to help me keep from stumbling. You'll hear her field some great questions to Guy a few times throughout the interview.

There is, however, one catch even with this extended cut: we wound up chatting with Guy for so long that the recording equipment we used ran out of juice just before we wrapped up. Don't worry - you have virtually all the juicy stuff we talked about, but I just wanted to give a heads up on the use of the canned conclusion.

With that said, you can now grab my full interview with Guy Kawasaki, which weighs in at 50MB and 55 minutes. Enjoy it from this direct link, our iTunes Store Podcast directory or our own podcast RSS feed. Enjoy.

  • iTunes: Free Friday

Happy Friday to you! Today brings us a free episode of Bravo's Top Design at the iTunes Store, which I just got around to watching on TiVo last night. It's basically a rehash of HGTV's Design Star, but on a different network and without the marvelous Tim or David.

    US: Top Design, Episode 101
This spring, more than colors are going to be clashing when 12 of the hottest up-and-coming interior designers square off in Bravo's all new competition reality series, Top Design. Todd Oldham, acclaimed fashion-turned-furnishings designer, will serve as host and inspire the contestants to show their most creative and original sides. Each week, the competitors will face their toughest critics: lead judge Jonathan Adler, known for his glamorous mod-inspired style; Margaret Russell, Editor-In-Chief of Elle Décor magazine; and Kelly Wearstler, designer of the trendsetting interiors of the Viceroy Resorts. The contestants will live together in Los Angeles in a decked-out studio loft as they vie for seed money to start their own design firm, a car from GM, a feature in Elle Décor, and a spot in Dining By Design, one of New York's finest design showcases.

  • Bill Gates: "security guys break the Mac every single day"

I'm all for competition in the marketplace. I'm even for friendly puns between rival competitors and the camps that follow them, especially since you have to have a sense of humor about them in the first place. But don't we also need a sense of reality?

In a Vista-pimping interview with Newsweek yesterday, Bill Gates appears to be taking off the gloves with an all-out attack on the Mac. When questioned about accusations of copying Mac OS X features, Bill began accusing Apple of the exact opposite, and he also postulated that "maybe we shouldn't have showed so publicly the stuff we were doing." While he is of course referring to the 2003 demonstration of Longhorn, this isn't even the half of it. Bill also tried to turn their reputation for swiss-cheese security around on Apple, claiming:

"Nowadays, security guys break the Mac every single day. Every single day, they come out with a total exploit, your machine can be taken over totally. I dare anybody to do that once a month on the Windows machine."

I'm sorry: "Total exploit?" Did anyone else see something from the rear end of a bull just fly over their shoulder? I'm no security fanboy for the Mac, but perhaps Bill got the wrong impression of how (not so) widespread the exploits from MOAB - the Month of Apple Bugs - actually became. Or perhaps he forgot that it's Microsoft who has had to set up regular patch release schedules to help throttle the damage. All things considered, however, I can understand if Bill lost track; regularity can sometimes numb the pain, breeding forgetfulness in the process.

Check out the rest of the, uh... 'interesting' interview for some other great zingers from the big G-man. If you ask me, he sure is shaping up to retire with a bang in 2008.
