  • iTunes gathers Love Songs

Love is in the air, and it would seem it is also in the iTunes Store. Valentine's Day is right around the corner and no doubt you'll want to fill your iPod to the brim with a wide assortment of love songs. iTunes is there with a special section called, oddly enough, Love Songs.

Here, in one place, are a number of different love song compilations for your buying and listening pleasure. Tell someone you love them the only way that counts, by purchasing them something.

  • iPodDisk

In honor of His Steveness' disdain for DRM, I thought it would be appropriate to highlight a little app that makes getting music off of your iPod easy as pie. Sure, there are a number of ways of accessing the music that resides on your iPod but iPodDisk combines two killer features: free and easy.

That's right, if you have your iPod set to disk mode, iPodDisk allows you to browse, and copy, all the music that is on it (for backup purposes only, of course). It even offers Spotlight support, which is pretty awesome.

iPodDisk is free, but it is a PPC app at the moment, a Universal Binary is on the way shortly.

  • Apple online seminar: New to the Mac and Compatibility with Windows

You might not be aware of this, but Apple has a large array of online seminars, which are free for you to view. Simply register for them, and you can watch the seminars on demand for as long as they are available.

I just watched the two part, 'New to the Mac and Compatibility with Windows' and I must say I was impressed. Clearly aimed at Mac neophytes, this seminar does a good job of making corollaries between Macs and PCs, and assuring the small business owner that the Mac works with a number of industry standards.

  • iTunes: Free Tuesday

Each Tuesday, TUAW is pleased to bring you the latest free items from iTunes. This week's Free Tuesday is dedicated to the memory of Michael Scott Baldwin, a college friend who passed away yesterday surrounded by family and friends. He was too young. He will be missed.

    US Music

US: You Give Me Something by James Morrison
"You Give Me Something" has a warm, brassy feel that sounds like it could have rolled off of the soul music assembly line in the early '70s. A touch of strings, brass, and acoustic guitar build up into a crescendo that Morrison is able navigate safely due to his strong, belting vocals. He's obviously a student of the Stevie Wonder songbook who also happens to have his own songs to sing. Should we mention that he hails from the U.K. and is barely in his twenties?

    US: Antonia by Stefano Bollani
Stefano Bollani is an Italian pianist who, at 35, has been performing for more than half of his life. His early years were spent at the Florence Music Academy, where he underwent a rigorous study of classical music. At the same time, his ears became attuned to the sound of bebop through masters like Charlie Parker and Bud Powell. "Antonia" is taken from his Piano Solo album and showcases both his virtuosity and his subtlety. It's a relaxed yet completely luscious and enveloping track. Try it for free - it's this week's Discovery Download.

TV Shows and international listings after the jump...

  • Steve Jobs posts his thoughts on music (and DRM)

I just finished reading Thoughts on Music by everyone's favorite iCEO, Steve Jobs. Then I read it again.

This is big, folks. While the piece is entitled 'Thoughts on Music,' it is really all about DRM (Digital Rights Management). Steve outlines 3 scenarios that the future of online music distribution can take:
    1. Stay as it is. Each online store using different, and incompatible, DRM schemes to sync with different devices.
    2. Apple licenses FairPlay to others (spoiler alert: it isn't going to happen).
    3. The music industry agrees to license their music to online stores without DRM.
Steve calls for the music industry to embrace the final option, arguing that DRM is pointless and pricey to support especially when you can buy a physical CD unencumbered with DRM.

I encourage everyone to read this themselves to get a glimpse into what one of the largest music distributors thinks about DRM (and it even has some interesting bits about Apple and the big record labels deal. Did you know that if FairPlay, Apple's DRM, is cracked Apple has a few weeks to fix the problem and if they can't the music companies can pull all of their music from the iTunes Store? Wacky, huh?).

I'm with Steve, let's end DRM and let the music play on all devices!

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

  • WWDC 2007: June 11 - 15

Attention Mac coding nerds (and I say that will all possible respect), Apple has announced the dates for their World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC for those in the know). This year WWDC is happening in San Francisco on June 11th through the 15. WWDC is traditionally a little later in the summer, which leads people to believe that Steve might announce Leopard's availability during the WWDC keynote.

Update: It would seem that my memory only goes back as far as last year, which had an unusually late WWDC. This date is more inline with 'traditional' WWDC time. My bad, as the kids say.
