- MarsEdit acquired by Red Sweater Software
Filed under: Software, Blogging
MarsEdit is my blogging client of choice. It is simple, straightforward, and streamlined (unlike Ecto, which I also use and enjoy). Today we found out that MarsEdit, formerly of Ranchero which itself was acquired by NewsGator, has been acquired by Red Sweater Software. This is good news for all MarsEdit uses since NewsGator is much more focused on NetNewsWire, and the future of MarsEdit didn't look too clear.
Check out this Q&A with Brent Simmons, creator of MarsEdit, and Daniel Jalkut, the man behind the Red Sweater, for some insights into the future of MarsEdit.
Updates to MarsEdit 1.x will continue to be free for registered users, and new users can pick up a copy for $24.95.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Software, Education, Odds and ends, Freeware
When we recently mentioned the release of EarthDesk 4.0 from xeric design, many of the commenters suggested we check out the OSXplanet Project. OSXplanet is a Cocoa port of the Open Source program Xplanet and like EarthDesk puts a "live" picture of the earth on your Desktop. However, like Xplanet, OSXplanet can also display other planets in the solar system (though perforce with not quite as much live data). You can choose from a variety of map projections, see cloud formations, mark cities on the map (and even center the view on one of them), track storms, view earthquakes and volcanoes, and even some satellites (as I write this, the International Space Station seems to be about over Chicago). Surprisingly, it doesn't even require too big of a memory hit (I'm at about 54MB real).
OSXplanet is a free download though its author (who is all of 17 years old) requests donations ($20 suggested).Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Gaming, Software, Odds and ends
The cross-platform Roller Coaster simulator No Limits has recently been updated to version 1.6 for the Mac, and since we've never mentioned it before on TUAW, I thought it was worth bringing to your attention. No Limits is both a simulator that allows you to "ride" a variety of coasters, as well as a track editor you can use to build your own designs. The No Limits community is quite large (I know a roller-coaster addict who has long been a fan) and so there are quite a few fan designed coasters you can download and try out. There are even replicas of famous real coasters from parks around the world. No Limits uses Open GL to render your ride in real time, with extensive scenery and details; you can even look around (with the mouse) during the ride. But the best part is definitely designing your own coasters, allowing you to go well beyond the limits safety and prudence dictate in the real world.
No Limits is $29.95 and a demo is available.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Macworld, Accessories, Hardware, Video, Cult of Mac
Some Mac websites might say, 'Macworld 2007? That's old news, grandpa!' Not TUAW, though, because we are devoted to getting as many videos that feature yours truly onto the internet as possible. After some production delays we can finally share with you our brief chat with the guys behind ETCHamac, whom we have covered here at TUAW a few times before.
Here is the iPod ready version, so feel free to avoid the Netscape player if you like.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Multimedia, Software, Video, Beta Beat
We recently mentioned that the Joost IPTV streaming video service had released an Intel Mac compatible beta version of their client. Now Ars Technica has put up a First Look and it looks pretty darn cool. While there are still some rough edges to be ironed out with text and performance, Ars reports that "the Mac client is a near replica of the Windows client" and "provided a good Mac experience, with no real navigational or functionality problems to speak of." This sort of thing is exactly what makes the Intel transition so great. It's hard to imagine that we'd be getting nearly as many of these sorts of things on the Mac were we still on PPC. It's unfortunate that owners of PPC Macs are shut out, but perhaps they can console themselves with the thought that now they have yet another good reason to upgrade! Unfortunately, the Joost service is still closed to new users (though you can register for an invite). I've been waiting for a while, but reports like this make me that much more eager to get one so I try it out for myself.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

One of the coolest places at Macworld this year was the ADC Developer Pavilion. Lots of small developers showing off their wares to the masses is always a good time if you ask me, but I'm crazy for third party developers. Apple has just posted audio interviews with 9 of those very developers, along with a photo gallery of the pavilion.
This is great, to be sure, but at the risk of sounding like an ingrate, these 9 interviews would have been great as a podcast (or a podcast series). That being said, the interviews are well worth a listen.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
