  • Take Your Mac Pro Eight Ways

You know what they say, if four is good, eight must be better. MacBidouille has a nicely detailed tutorial on replacing your Mac Pro's stock Dual Core Xeons with Intel's new Quad Core Xeon X5355, bringing your up to eight total cores. Needless to say, you'll be kissing your Apple warranty goodbye if you perform this kind of brain surgery, and some earlier tests from AnandTech even indicated you won't necessarily gain in performance (since software has to be optimized to use multiple cores effectively). Nonetheless, if you're the type that just must have the biggest, baddest Mac beast out there you should start looking for a long hexagonal screwdriver.

Personally, I think I would just wait until Apple gets around to doing this for me in some future Mac Pro, but I think it's great that's this sort of thing possible.

  • iPod How-to videos

Need to replace your video iPod's LCD screen or faceplate? Looking to upgrade its hard drive or battery? A new website, ipodhowtovideo.com offers a number of free iPod how-to videos. These are clearly home-brew videos, but they provide well-paced step-by-step instructions and there's a refreshing lack of site-promotion in the videos. It's nice to be able to watch along with the narrative to see how the job actually gets done.

I doubt I'm going to do any of these projects any time soon, but the videos made me want to go out and find a bunch of busted 5G iPods, just so I could try.

  • iPod crossing ban reactions

Not everyone is happy about the whole iPodoblivion anti-Zombie regulation introduced by a state legislator in New York, which proposes to ban crossing the street while using an iPod. Okay, to be fair, pretty much absolutely everyone who has heard about this proposed legislation thinks it's well meaning idiocy. This morning, TUAW reader Charlie Moran pointed us to this video from HBO/AOL's comedy site. (Warning: explicit language.) I also found this bunch of letters from today's New York Post, offering various reader reactions to the proposal.

Bottom line? When listening to an iPod, look both ways.

Update: just fixed the video link again.

  • Grammy winners on the iTunes store

    Filed under:

The music industry got together last night to give itself a big old pat on the back. That's right, the Grammy Awards telecast aired yesterday and all the big stars in the music universe were there. The only part I watched was the Police's performance, but if you are interested in owning some of the Grammy winning music head on over to this iTunes page. Apple lists some of the winners (and nominees), which makes it as easy as pie to buy that Grammy award winning track.

  • Five things you never knew about the iPod

    Filed under:

Gadget Mag T3 published a little article listing several little-known iPod facts. Before anyone jumps out of the woodwork shouting "I knew that stuff already! Pwned!", remember that the story is written to a general audience.

Take the factoids-on-offer with several grains of salt, though, as I do not believe the judge of the Apple vs Apple case, Edward Mann, was asked to recuse himself, and not entirely sure that he offered let alone was "nearly unseated." That being said, you might learn a thing or two about iPods thanks to Gadget Mag T3.

  • FMenu: Facebook in Your Menubar

Kids these days are always going on about their Facebook "social utility." I don't understand such things, but anyway I bring news of FMenu, a little menubar program that keeps you appraised of developments with the popular online community. According to the developer, FMenu will sit quietly in your menubar until one of the following occurs:
    • A friend updates his profile
    • A friend changes his status
    • A friend writes a new note
    • Someone writes on your wall
    • You have new messages
    • You have new pokes
    • You have new friend requests
    • You have new photo comments
At this point, through the glorious magic of Growl, you are informed and can take appropriate action (which I suppose does not include my preferred solution of deleting your Facebook profile).</grumpy_old_man>

In any case, FMenu is Open Source and a free download, but donations are requested.
