- Macworld Expo returns to Switzerland
After many years, MacWorld Expo is set to return to Switzerland. TUAW reader Steve pointed us the news over at MacPrime. My German is pretty schreklich, but it sounds like May 22th is the day to be looking forward to in Zürich. German-speaking readers, please feel free to jump in and translate the article for us and let us know what's up on the Macworld.ch front.

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Retail, Bad Apple
Everyone knows about conventional giftcards and how they provide windfall profits for retailers. So what about undelivered iTunes gift songs and gift cards? In an electronics-only world, does it really matter to a retailer whether they get used or not?
TUAW reader Lawrence Harvey pointed us to this article over at SimpleTechnology. The writers decided to test whether gifts were making it to their recipients. Of the twenty gift tracks they sent out, they experienced no less than a 25% failure-to-receive rate. 5 out of the 20 songs never made it to their intended recipient, without any feedback from Apple about the failed deliveries.
Retailers obviously do not have a responsibility to ensure that electronic gifts are used, but it seems to us that Apple might be a little more proactive about sending out reminders of unused gift credits. It would create goodwill at very little cost to the company.

Will the AppleTV be a gaming platform as well as a simple video receiver? Our sister blog Engadget discovered that games company PopCap may have divulged game development plans during an interview with Wired. Ryan Block writes that AppleTV's HD support might hint at specific HD gaming development but he wonders how anyone would get gaming with Apple's minimal remote.
Here at TUAW, we remain skeptical. But if an AppleTV gaming solution would suddenly materialize, we'd respond with happy cries of "Wii!". Or something like that. Pop over to Engadget to read more about the story.

Dashcode is the software by Apple that makes it super easy to create widgets. It's going to be bundled with Leopard, but members of the ADC can download the beta right now.
Michael at Apple Gazette created a video tutorial on making an RSS widget with Dashcode (above). It's a clear walkthrough of a very simple process.
I've played with the beat a bit and it's fun. I'm looking forward to the 1.0 release with Leopard.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

It's Friday! Let's celebrate with a little levity.
What happens when out-of-touch Sony offers to collaborate with Apple? Why, the WalkPod, of course! This portable device combines new and old concepts of "music in your pocket."
Knowing Sony, it'll cost $599.*
Thanks, Owen!

Filed under: Audio, iPod Family, iTS, Rumors
EMI, home to Cold Play, the Rolling Stones, and the Beastie Boys, has experimented before with DRM-free MP3. They've released DRM-less singles by Norah Jones, Lily Allen and Relient K. According to a Forbes report, EMI spokeswoman Jeanne Meyer said "The results of those experiments were very positive, and the fan feedback has been very enthusiastic."Now EMI is looking to take the next step. An unnamed Forbes source says that EMI has solicited proposals from their retailers to tell the company how they would offer DRM-free MP3s. The retailers would offer large advances in exchange for the right to sell MP3s. EMI will weigh whether to continue forward with the scheme based on the size of the offers, and the Forbes source said a decision from EMI about going forward with the scheme could be made quickly.
Are the dams breaking? Or is this just more hopeful rumors in the wake of Steve Job's recent open letter? Only time will tell.

Environmental website Grist writes about a new site that sells iPod cases made from recycled 45 rpm records. For $45, you can choose your favorite record from a page of used records, and have your case custom made from your selection. Yes, it's a little on the pricey side, but it's a nice way to green your music. Grist describes it as using the "old media" to protect the "new media". Cute.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Is iTunes U (or "Itunes U") an effective way to teach? The Collegiate Times editorial board says no. They doubt that students will take the time to download and experience the multimedia coursework material that professors upload. For some reason, the authors are under the impression that students do better by attending class and paying attention there--as if core curriculum classes did not regularly take place at 7:00 or 8:00 in the morning before caffeine has truly hit one's system. These materials might encourage students to skip class (oh no!) and feel they might be able to experience the same learning from the comfort of their own bedroom. And that of course would be wrong.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
