- Create a PDF listing of a folder's contents
Filed under: How-tos
MurphyMac has posted yet another cool how-to video. This one shows how to create a PDF listing of the contents of an OS X folder. It relies on creating a sidebar printer, which you can find out how to do in this related trick. By dragging a folder to the sidebar printer and saving to PDF, you create a tabular listing of the folder's contents. The video offers the complete how-to steps. I can easily see using this trick to create an index for photos or videos that I need to archive.
MurphyMac is the same site that showed us how to sleep a Mac by email and customize your disk images.

Edgar Bronfman Jr, chairman and CEO of Warner Music Group, thinks DRM is a good thing (though that article does get his name wrong). It protects intellectual property. He doesn't think, however, that DRM should limit listeners to a single device, instead he believes in "interoperability".In a speech in Barcelona, he suggested that the music industry could achieve interoperability without sacrificing rights management. Bronfman did not mention Apple or Jobs by name, but one suspects this is another vote for Apple licensing FairPlay, or for opening up the iPod to 3rd party DRM schemes. That puts WMG in line with the official RIAA stance.
Of course, there's always DVD Jon, and his FairPlay-for-sale scheme.

Apple just posted an updated version of its Fibre Channel Utility, allowing you to configure your Apple Fibre Channel PCI cards, including Dual- and Quad-Channel 4GB cards. Two archaic versions are also available for download, for 10.3 and for 10.4-10.4.7. For the curious, Wikipedia discusses Fibre Channel, a gigabit-speed networking technology, here.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Features, Cool tools, How-tos, Tips and tricks, Ask TUAW
Last week Ask TUAW took a little unplanned vacation, but it's back this week none the worse for wear. This time we'll be taking up questions from two weeks ago on getting video from a home DVD into iMovie, dismissing dialog boxes using the keyboard rather than the mouse, printing CD case labels, and upgrading older Macs to 802.11n. As always, readers are invited to offer their own comments and suggestion, as well as submit more questions for next week. And now to this week's questions...Continue reading Ask TUAW: DVD into iMovie, Dialogs with Keyboard and More

Reader Steve Rubel tipped us to the virtual presence of an eerily familiar retail environment inside the Second Life metaverse. In this virtual Apple Store, you can belly up to the Genius Bar, or browse the imaginary products on the not-really-there shelves -- and yes, Laurie, that's a Cube there on the bar. Unlike the physical Apple Stores, though, it is possible to skip the glass elevator and simply fly up to the balcony. This also appears to be a different setup than the "Apple Core" store noted in this Cult Of Mac story from last year.
Rubel bets that this little slice of heaven gets the Apple Legal C&D treatment inside of a few days. Until then, you can visit the store via this SLurl (teleports you to the game location), by searching for "Aapl$tore" inside the game engine, or just look around in this Flickr set of images.
Thanks Steve!Read | Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
