  • Jobs Blasts Teachers Unions

    Well having annoyed a lot of folks with his recent missive on DRM, Uncle Steve seemed likely to be making more enemies on Friday at a conference in Texas about K-12 education reform where he appeared along with Michael Dell. The AP reports that Jobs said, "I believe that what is wrong with our schools in this nation is that they have become unionized in the worst possible way. This unionization and lifetime employment of K-12 teachers is off-the-charts crazy." Being in higher education, I see the results of our K-12 education on a daily basis, and it's clear that there's a problem. One interesting thing about this, whether you ultimately agree with Jobs or not, is that he felt free to say it. Jobs even allowed, "Apple just lost some business in this state, I'm sure," though the AP noted that "the audience applauded enthusiastically" several times. It is perhaps not surprising that Dell "sat quietly with his hands folded in his lap" while Jobs was being his charismatic self.

  • iTunes: Free Sunday

    I don't watch Lost. It's one of those shows that I've caught bits of here or there but whose story was so big and so involved that I never took the time to catch up. Now iTunes brings a free catchup episode, the Lost Survival Guide, meant to hook potential viewers like myself. Except, I'm not sure I really want to get hooked. My Lost-loving friends are kind of fed up with the series at this point, worried that the story is going nowhere fast. So if you're willing to catch up with a bit over two seasons of backstory, a lot of freaky numbers, "The Others", several islands, and Matt Parkman dying in the pilot, this is probably your best free download for getting started.

  • Five iWeb Shareware Alternatives

    Over at Informit, Ryan Faas posts about five shareware alternatives to iWeb. I spent a bit of time using iWeb when it first shipped but quickly abandoned it when it became clear how slow and clunky it was as a development tool. Although iWeb produces some beautiful pages, it wasn't useful enough for me to make up for its operational difficulties. So it was nice to stumble across this list of alternatives including programs like Sandvox and RapidWeaver and revisit a space that I had more or less already written off.
