- Zune spokesman: Jobs "irresponsible, or at the very least naïve"
An article at today's New York Times allowed Jason Reindorp, Zune marketing director for Microsoft, to rebut Steve Job's open letter on DRM with some fairly harsh quotes. He calls Jobs' suggestion that the music industry might license their offerings without DRM, "irresponsible, or at the very least naïve...It's like he's on top of the mountain making pronouncements, while we're here on the ground working with the industry to make it happen..." Reindorp called Jobs a "master of the obvious", suggesting that DRM restrictions are already loosening within the music industry.

Jason O'Grady over at ZDNet posted about DasBoot from SubRosaSoft. (Don't you love both the name of the product and the company!?) DasBoot allows you to turn your iPod (or a spare flash drive) into an OS X bootable disk. Feed it any third-party bootable CD, like the ones shipped from Disk Warrior or Data Rescue II, and DasBoot will set up your iPod to boot and access those utilities. After all, what are you more likely to carry around in your pocket, Your Disk Warrior CD or your iPod? Best of all, DasBoot is free. Thanks SubRosaSoft!

It takes a more basic GUI approach to getting things done, with the addition of full-featured syncing. DVD Jon, the man supposedly behind DeCSS and advocate for circumventing DRM, has responded to Steve Jobs' open letter on DRM in three posts on his blog. In his replies, Johansen notes that some customers are more locked into the iPod based on whether they've purchased their media on CD or through the iTunes store, and Apple could (at least in theory) swiftly remove FairPlay from any track from which a content owner declines DRM. Perhaps Apple should have sent the FCC a request of confidentiality for their request for confidentiality on the iPhone. Engadget has found a copy of Apple's request to the FCC to keep the iPhone under wraps. Whether or not they will (or can) keep Apple's big play into mobile phones quiet remains to be seen, but Engadget quickly speculates at the possibility of slip-ups like this, as well as quick-to-rip off competition from Asian manufacturers, sparking an early release from Apple.

InformationWeek reports that Warren East, president and CEO of ARM Holdings, confirmed that the iPhone will use at least three ARM processors. The main CPU will reportedly be a PXA320.

TUAW reader Bryan Hughes writes in to tell us that after many unsuccessful attempts, he was unable to connect wirelessly to his Xbox 360 via the new 802.11n Airport Extreme. Over at a discussion at Apple Tech Support, other users report no problem connecting their Wiis and Playstation 3s to the Airport Extreme network but that the Xbox is another matter.

So would you be willing to entirely disable security on your wireless network to connect to your Xbox? That's apparently one way of making the connection work. Some readers report that turning off security and closing their network (not advertising the SSID) and using MAC address filtering work.
