- Lineform 1.3 Updated with PDF Support
We've mentioned Lineform a couple of times, but the newly released version 1.3 of Freeverse's Illustrator alternative vector illustration program adds a significant new feature: PDF import and editing. You can now directly import a PDF into Lineform, resize it, and mark it up with the standard Lineform drawing tools. Other new features include improved SVG support and 256000% (!) maximum zoom.
Lineform remains $79.95 and a demo is available.

Filed under: Education, Odds and ends, Apple
Everybody knows that the Mac and higher education are supposed to go together like, well... like two things that go really well together. However, those of us that have spent a lot of time on campus lately realize that is often not the case. At my own university (and the one I recently left), the Mac is distinctly a second-class citizen (though there are some Macs around here, and a very passionate band of Mac-heads that keeps the IT people from abandoning us completely). For instance, when I got here I was issued a Dell which sits quietly in my office doing, well, nothing and the university recently standardized on Microsoft's Exchange server and Outlook as a putatively cost-saving move.
With that said, it's nice to see someplace moving in the right direction: Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, PA recently announced that the campus was going 100% Mac. According to Scott Byers, a Wilkes vice president, "Macs are constructed with superior technology and hardware and their ability to run Windows means we still have access to any Windows programs... It's the best of both worlds." Apple's marketing department could hardly have said it better! The university is spending $1.4 million on the switch over and "expects to replenish its 1700-computer network with Macs in the next three years" to create "a virtually virus-free IT network." Let's hope that this marks the start of a trend.

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/02/24/all-mac-university/#comments - TrailRunner 1.3 with Garmin and Nike Support
Filed under: iPod Family, Software, Odds and ends
When we last mentioned TrailRunner it was pitched primarily as a tool for making your iPod into a workout tool. The newly released version 1.3 expands its functionality considerably with support for importing routes from the recently released Garmin Training Center as well as workout information from the Nike + iPod kit. Now with TrailRunner you can plan and mark out your route in color on USGS (or other) topographical maps, download those maps to your iPod (as photos), record your actual run/bike ride/hike on your Garmin GPS (like the Forerunner, right), and re-upload that tracking information to TrailRunner for analysis and comparison with others. TrailRunner can also import and export KML files for use with Google Earth.
As before, TrailRunner is a free download, but donations are requested.

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/02/24/tuaw-best-of-the-week/#comments - "Free Public WiFi" on a plane = XP wireless goof
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Airport, Security
The initial error was mine: I was running XP (in Boot Camp) before I got onboard, and forgot to reboot in Mac OS X (where my iTunes library of "hey kids, let's keep quiet while the other passengers sleep!" videos lives) prior to the flight. Once we reached cruising altitude, I fired up the MBP and quickly went to turn off my Airport card, as all good Americans must do... and what on Earth (or high above it) is that "Free Public WiFi" peer-to-peer network doing on a PLANE?? Someone is not paying attention!
I had seen these "Free Public WiFi" peer-to-peer networks around before, usually in airports, and had ignored them as malware honeypots; the truth is apparently a little less malicious but still pretty scary. It seems that our friends in Redmond have (since Jan 06) some strangeness in the wireless network management routines under XP; any WLAN that a Windows machine joins gets 'echoed' back out as an ad-hoc SSID if the machine can't find the previous connection (an implementation of RFC 3927).
David Maynor, of "MacBook WiFi Hack" fame, posted on the quirky fun back in January, as did Brian Krebs. The result of this 'feature' is that certain bogus SSIDs spread in viral fashion wherever large numbers of Windows laptops congregate. Machines may be joining the same ad-hoc network unintentionally, and a malicious user could attempt exploitation of those machines without warning.
Reason #2048 why I love my Mac: wireless security flaws in OS X are obscure, debatable and mostly academic, not readily visible in every airport and bus terminal.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
