  • Freecycle meets iPod

    Filed under:

Meet Matthew Smith. One day he decided to use a magnetic holder to hold his iPod in his car. Bad move. The magnet warped his hard drive, rendering it inoperable. So Smith turned to Freecycle, the Internet-based sharing community that prefers to gift unused items rather than to toss them into landfill.

The freecyclers responded so enthusiastically that not only did he have enough parts to fix his own iPod, but also to repair and build a few more units. Which he gave away. So more people began to donate broken iPods to him, which he now fixes up and offers back out to his community. What a marvelous way to be socially responsible, environmentally conscious and spread the iPod love! TUAW salutes Matthew Smith.

  • Apple Store employees prepped for Vista

Let the battle begin! Along with the snarky new television ad, Apple is arming retail store employees with information to share with customers regarding Microsoft's Vista. According to Think Secret, a six-page document that emphasizes Vista upgrade hassles, the OS's multiple versions and the fact that a Mac will run Windows has been distributed to Apple's 170 stores.

It's the third point that gets me. If I can have a Mac and run Windows, well that seems like having my cake and eating it, too. The first time I let my Windows-loving friend see my Macbook Pro boot XP, he nearly fell out of his chair. I'm really looking forward to seeing how OS 10.5 improves on this experience.

  • Xbox incompatible with Airport Extreme

    Filed under:

TUAW reader Bryan Hughes writes in to tell us that after many unsuccessful attempts, he was unable to connect wirelessly to his Xbox 360 via Airport Extreme. Over at a discussion at Apple Tech Support, other users report no problem connecting their Wiis and Playstation 3s to the Airport Extreme network but that the Xbox is another matter.

The Xbox 360 apparently will not recognize any network with security, whether WEP or WPA and Microsoft's tech support apparently is telling customers that Apple routers are not recommended. So would you be willing to entirely disable security on your wireless network to connect to your Xbox? That's apparently one way of making the connection work. Some readers report that turning off security and closing their network (not advertising the SSID) and using MAC address filtering work. You can join the Xbox/Airport Extreme discussion here.

  • Welcome to Brooklyn -- now turn off that iPod

    Filed under:

If a state senator from my home borough has his way, New York City and Buffalo police officers might soon be telling iPod users "Fuggeddaboutit!" if they try to cross the street while listening to music. Sen. Carl Kruger of Brooklyn, in response to two recent pedestrian deaths, has proposed legislation that would make iPod-crossing a minor offense comparable to jaywalking.

I'm a native New Yorker -- when I was a kid, we lived right across the street from a police station -- and I have never, ever seen anybody ticketed for jaywalking, so I'm thinking that even if this proposal were to become law the day-to-day impact would be unnoticeable. Of course, we do have an iPod Zombie problem in the Big Apple, but it's generalized to all sorts of portable devices. I once grabbed a guy who was about to walk in front of a delivery truck while he was focused, head down, on dialing his RAZR; he actually thanked me, another NYC rarity.

Perhaps, instead of criminalizing stupidity (which rarely works), a targeted PR campaign on the subways could remind iPod users to "turn down & tune in" while they navigate the mean streets. Anyone want to design the poster? Link it in the comments or post on Flickr, give it a Creative Commons license and tag it 'turndowntunein' -- if there are a few that stand out, I'll try to get them noticed by NYC officials.

    Thanks Mitch!

  • Have an iPhone-like experience with iSoftPhone

Ok, so the title may be a bit of a stretch. iSoftPhone is a VoIP service that combines inexpensive rates with a very familiar user interface. It uses the SIP protocol, integrates with Address Book and sends SMS messages.

For full information look here. I haven't tried it - because I have no one to call - so I won't give you any real world information. If you try it out, let us know how it goes. Maybe it'll even satisfy your iPhone lust until June.

  • Ticketmaster, iTunes promo

Ticketmaster announced a partnership with the iTunes Store today which will allow their customers to receive a free song from iTunes, starting this summer. A "music sampler" of the artist they're going to see will also be made available.

In addition, iTunes customers who pre-order certain albums will be able to buy concert tickets before the general public. You may remember that Apple tried this last year, and it didn't to very well. According to Sean Moriarty, president and CEO of Ticketmaster, that won't be the case this year:

"By providing direct links to iTunes, the world's most popular online music and video store, we're giving iTunes and Ticketmaster customers the opportunity to buy concert tickets, and explore and purchase great music..."

Also, look for iTunes + Ticketmaster gift cards this summer, which will be redeemable with Ticketmaster and iTunes. They'll cost $50US.
