  • Green my Apple hits Amsterdam
On Saturday, together with volunteers, I visited the 2 Apple stores in Amsterdam to spread the Green Apple message to Dutch Mac fans.

Early on Saturday morning the Dutch Greenpeace office was busy with volunteers stickering 800 green organic apples with the GreenmyApple website address. The early turn out was impressive considering there was a party on the Arctic Sunrise docked in Amsterdam the night before!

From Green my Apple hits Amsterdam.

  • Electronics companies race to be greener - Apple has dropped to last place
This is sad news. Apple really shouldn't be in the bottom of that list. "Green My Apple Steve"!

Electronics companies race to be greener - Apple has dropped to last place

Acer and Lenovo are the latest of the top computer makers to commit to stop using the worst toxic chemicals in their products. Along with Motorola these companies are the biggest movers in the latest version of our Guide to Greener Electronics.

  • "I am crying myself to sleep mode"

I just loved that! It's from one of the three new Apple commercials. But. As always it's the PC guy that is funny and not the Apple guy who rather looks dull and boring...

  • Steve Jobs Sells 45% of His Shares At Apple
Apple Computer founder and CEO Steve Jobs sold 45 per cent of his Apple stock this week. Jobs sold 4.57m shares at a price of $64.66, netting him a cool $295m.Here is an update on this crazy news that has been around this week:
Okey, what is this? Has Steve gone crazy or what is really happening? Will he use the money he has earned to start a brand new company? Or does he just want some more money under the mattress?
Will the Intel-based Macintoshes be flukes? Is Apple's future as a company bleak? I mean when the chief executive of a company seemingly on the rise sells a huge chunk of company shares, that doesn't forebode anything good.
    - J. Angelo Racoma
Update Monday 6:30pm PT: The WSJ said this evening that Jobs gave up his stake "to satisfy tax obligations", according to a report by Nick Wingfield. Several readers had berated El Reg for not publishing a rumor to this effect last week. Why not? Because we prefer facts to unsubstantiated (but fun) rumors.

    Thanks to Allen Heat.

  • Users choke on price of Apple's first iTunes movie
As you probably know Apple has recently started selling their very first full-length movie through iTunes. It's a Disney movie called: High School Musical.

The thing that everyone is complaining about is the very high price for the movie, $9.99. The price was first very briefly on the pleasant price of $1.99.
"Talk about a rip-off," a user by the name of 'Eel' ranted in the review section for the download. "I'm sorry, but $1.99 is perfect for an iPod format. When you get to $10, you're basically paying for a DVD without getting the DVD extras or quality."

Another user, 'Sparrow15', added in reference to the lack of bonus features: "Love the movie, but the price should be lowered if this is all I'm getting."
Yes, this is truly a rip-off. No wonder they can't stop piracy.

  • Hackers Get Windows XP on Apple Computers
As expected, hackers have found a way to run Microsoft Corp.'s Windows XP operating system on new Macintosh computers, winning an ad hoc contest and a $13,854 cash prize to boot.

Or, make that dual-boot — the way to make a computer switch between two operating systems.

Some users of Apple Computer Inc.'s Macs have clamored for such a solution since Apple said it would be switching its computers to Intel Corp.'s chips, putting the feat within reach.

Their reasons vary, but a common denominator is that they would like to run Windows-based programs on their Macs.

Colin Nederkoorn, a shipping broker in Houston, says he just wants to streamline his work: instead of using his Apple PowerBook computer for some programs and a Windows PC for other tasks, he'd like to just use one machine.

That's why Nederkoorn, 23, started a contest back in January to goad programmers, soliciting donations for a cash prize for anyone who came up with a hack.

Late Thursday, the prize went to two San Francisco Bay Area software developers, Jesus Lopez, 33, of Alameda, and Eric Wasserman, 41, of Berkeley.

  • Mac OS X Get Info Window

When you select 10 files in the Finder and press Command-I to open the Get Info window, you don't get an summary window detailing the files as a whole, but rather 10 different Get Info windows. However, if you select 11 files, you get the summary window. If you want the summary window instead of 10 different windows regardless of the items selected, press down Control while opening the Get Info window (shortcut: Control-Command-I).

The Get Info window currently used in OS X was inherited from OS 9, but if you prefer to use the old-style Inspector window used in OS 10.1 and earlier, hold down Option while opening the Get Info window (shortcut: Option-Command-I).

  • Creating disk images
You have to be careful when you use your DVD drive on your laptop. It drains a lot of battery power. Also, if you're on the road you may not want to deal with multiple disks.

In such situations the power of disk image comes to the resque. You can create a virtual disk image of your CD or DVD and store it on your hard drive temporarily. It will mount exactly as the original except your Mac will be able to read data from it much faster.

To create a disk image open Applications /Utilities /Disk Utility. Once you insert your optical media (CD or DVD) it will mount on the left sidebar. Select the media and not the drive itself. Now, just click the icon New Image and select the location to save the disk image. There are options to create the image as compressed to save disk space and make the image password protected. Select your preference. Once the process is finished you can eject the media. Any time you need your virtual disk, just double click the .dmg file that has been created to mount your virtual disk. Once you're done with it, you can simply trash the .dmg file to free up space on your hard drive.

  • THREE THOUSAND iBooks installed in less than 3 days
Miramar High School had the largest number of iBooks in this 1 to 1 installation. We configured, installed and delivered close to 3,000 systems in less than 3 days. Not sure if it is a new Apple record, but we're pretty confident it is.
What can I say? Just amazing. Where do I sign up for this school. :)

  • Macintosh Bittorrent Clients
Here is a list of Bittorrent Clients that you can run on your Mac. They are all free to use. If you know any other please drop a comment.

If you don't have a clue what Bittorrent is you can get one over here.

Azureus - Simply the best. A CPU hog (it is in Java), but it gets all the torrents the other clients can't. Seems to be the best for speed too, IMO. Highy configurable and a pleasure to use for power users, and also has the highest speed ratings because it has trackerless and uPnp support, besides a whole lotta plugins.

Bits on Wheels - This one would be my best overall choice. Very low CPU usage, great user interface, good customization, interesting '3d view' of peers and seeders, and efficient most of the time, except for those torrents that only Azureus manages to start downloading somehow.

Transmission - Some people swear by this program because it is small and simple, but I find the CPU usage of it growing steadily, even more than Azureus when I am downloading 3 or more files, and the speed is inconsistent. Very few options, I don't really like it but lots of people do. Usually gets the job done anyway with good speeds, though it tends to lock up sometimes.

Bittorrent - The official client. Not bad CPU usage, not very good speeds, a so-so client. Not worth getting, if you hate Azureus, get Bits on Wheels instead.

Tomato Torrent - Seems to have problems with a lot of torrents that should work, it has ben improving and sometimes I use it when downloading one or two torrents while I'm working on my computer because it's the most lightweight client of them all.

Bitpump - Small program, just released, shows big potential (from what I've seem from the Windows version screens, the Mac one is still kinda rough) but now it is still too bugged.

  • MagSafe not so safe? Apple Censors?
MagSafe is meant to be a smart friend who is built to stop you drag down your MacBook Pro on the floor. But is the MagSafe really safe?

At least not for Rogier Mulder. His MagSafe started burning without any notice. Exactly what happened is still uncertain but Apple got nervous and asked Rogier to put down the images that he had put on Flickr.

Here are the images: Image 1, Image 2, Image 3 and Image 4.

  • New iPod Ad: 1000 Songs
    New iPod Ad: 1000 Songs

Apple has released a brand new ad for iPod and iTunes. This time it isn't with the dancing black silhouettes. For this ad they have used lot's of album covers that transforms into houses and different shapes.

You can watch the whole ad here to make up your own opinion about this new ad. I thought it was better than I expected it to be. But the old iPod ads are way cooler than this one.

Another question: When will they air these ads in Sweden!!? :P

  • Sort your menubar icons
Have you ever wanted to move the clock, bluetooth, volume, screen or any apple standards icon in the menubar? If so.. Check this simple tip out then.

This tip is tested on Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, but may also work on previous versions.

The trick is so simple but is probably undiscovered by many users.. You're probably asking yourself, do I need to edit some files, open up the system folder or type any hidden keyword.. No it's much more easier then that..

Just press CMD or Apple button on your keyboard and hold your mouse over the icon in the menubar and just drag the icon where you want it to be, this way you could sort your menubar icons in your own personal order.. Or you could always use the orginal positions.. :)

  • Improve quality on iPhoto 5's Photobooks
This is a tip directed to the people who still are running iPhoto 5 and haven't bought the new iLife 06 suite, but still wants higher quality on their images in the photobooks you can order through iPhoto 5..

As you might have guess on first notice of the image, your'e going to need to open your terminal in Mac OS X, if your'e not familiar with this program it's command line to your system old UNIX way and it's located in your "Utilities" folder.

    1. First close down iPhoto 5!

    2. Then go there and click on the terminal icon and boom the terminal opens and then you can write or paste this line:

    defaults write com.apple.iPhoto BookTargetImageDPI 300.0000

After that you can close your terminal and open iPhoto 5 as usually..

Please Note: I haven't tested this myself but I've heard of many people who has done this hack and they've been happy with the results and in iPhoto 6 the resolution is 300 dpi by default..

  • Mac mini vs Microsoft Media Center

Cnet.com has started a really interesting test. Mac mini with Front Row versus a PC with Microsoft Media Center.

We've decided to pit Microsoft's Media Center offerings against Apple's new Intel Core Duo Mac Mini. A newcomer to the PVR scene, the dual-core Mac Mini is no bigger than a Bible (indeed some Mac fans will consider it thus), and capable of running full 1080i high-definition video. It also comes with a bundled remote control. The Mini is practically fanless. Although a small fan will audibly kick in if things get very hot, in normal operation it's almost silent.

At this point the Mac mini leads the contest/test. But this is just the first round. The next round is about TV. We'll see how it goes.

  • If Microsoft designed the iPod package

Do you guys remember the little movie who showed us how the iPod box would look if Microsoft designed it? Well, what you might not know is that it was Microsoft who did the movie.

The video, which surfaced on You Tube but has since been removed and can now be found on Google Video, pokes fun at Microsoft's tendency toward cluttered packaging by imagining how the company would have designed the box for the original iPod. Where Apple's design is sparse, Microsoft's final creation is full of so many stickers and other information that the photo of the MP3 player can be barely seen.

You can read the whole story here. If you have missed the movie or you just want to see it again you can see it here. Have fun! :)

  • WiFi in an easy way!
Imaging the following: You're on a trip with your iBook, PowerBook or MacBook Pro and you want to check E-Mails or do something in the internet. So you're searching for a wireless access point. To do this the "normal" way you have to check the Apple airport-menu continuously to see if a network is in your range.

This normal way is very bad because of two facts:

    1. You will miss many networks, because you don't want to open and close the airport-menu all the time
    2. In the airport-menu you don't see if the network is encrypted or open - you have to try to connect to verify this
Now imagine you have installed coconutWiFi 1.1.1.

Microsoft has released an update of Office 2004. They are now up in version 11.2.3. They also released an update for Messenger.
After you install this update, you can use Mac OS X Sync Services and Spotlight searches to sync and find Entourage items, use smart cards with Entourage 2004, and enjoy improved overall security and stability when using Microsoft Word 2004, Excel 2004, PowerPoint 2004, and Entourage 2004. This update also includes all of the improvements released in all previous Office 2004 updates.

  • Apple iPod Hi-Fi Busts A Window
    iPod HiFi Ad

No. It is not real broken glass. It's just an ad for Apple's new iPod HiFi.
Pastor Scott Hodge was walking down Chicago's Michigan Avenue yesterday and spotted this unique window dressing promoting Apple's new iPod Hi-Fi. Aside from the fact, the whole things just a really fancy speaker, the execution is most certainly attention getting and speaks well to the proverbial window-breaking qualities of proverbially kick ass sound systems. Check out the full sized images here.
