- Beta Beat: We all missed the Joost Mac Alpha--but stay tuned
Filed under: Video, Internet Tools, Beta Beat
For a very brief time today,Joost opened up to Mac Alpha seeding. They filled their download quota within minutes. Joost nèe "The Vienna Project", if you're not familiar with it, offers high quality free online streaming video channels. It's from the people who brought us Skype and it's fast, clean and watchable. The good news is that next week the "final proper public beta" goes live for OS X users, although I believe it will be limited to Intel CPUs.
Keep checking in at the Joost site, and if you're one of the lucky 200 who got in early let us know in the comments how it's going.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Retail, Odds and ends, Apple
In addition to being a big fan of Macs and Star Trek, I am something of a science buff. Therefore, I am always glad to hear about scientists using Macs to help make the world a better place (through science!). Imagine my excitement when I saw that Apple, in association with the American Museum of Natural History, is hosting a Pro Session called Envisioning Global Change: Seeing the Facts at select Apple Stores.
Ned Gardiner and Arlene Ducao present some HD visualizations of research which illustrates global changes in climate which they produce using Macs.
Sadly for me the first was held on the 7th in SoHo (the closest of the three to me), however, there are two more sessions scheduled:
- Feb. 28th at 7pm in the Apple Store San Francisco
- March 7th at 7pm in the Apple Store North Michigan Avenue

The RIAA doesn't want to drop DRM. It wants Apple to license FairPlay to competitors. In this Globe and Mail story, Mitch Bainwol, chief RIAA dude, says that licensing FairPlay to other manufacturers would allow iTunes purchases to be played on other devices. This move would, presumably, keep rampant piracy at bay by allowing more people to purchase at the iTunes store and play that music on their...Zune? Er, or something like that. The bottom line seems to be that the RIAA does not want to do away with digital rights restrictions and they still think we're all pirates. Arggggh, me hearties!

Thanks everyone who pointed out the RIAA response.
