- Apple announces Lionsgate Movies now in the iTunes Store
Filed under: iTS, Retail, Video
Apple today announced the availability of movies from the Lionsgate studio in the iTunes Store. Blockbusters like Terminator 2, LA Story and Basic Instinct are available today, with more than 150 titles on their way by the end of the month.
Unfortunately, this looks like another Paramount score - unless those movies still en route are new releases, it feels a lot more like Loinsgate is still wearing the bright orange floaties while dabbling their toes on the kiddie side of the pool, instead of waking up and actually embracing the future.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Attention, frugal Mac addicts. Second generation iPod nanos and original iPod shuffles have been added to Apple's list of refurbished items. Nanos are starting at $119US for a 2GB model, and the shuffles are just $49US! I really liked the original shuffle's rough-and-tumble design and here's your chance to pick one up at bargain basement prices.
Color availability is subject to change, of course, so good luck there.

Filed under: Gaming, Software, Freeware, Open Source
MacLive is an Open Source utility to keep track of your Xbox Live friends on your Mac. You can set it to let you know when your friends log on via a Growl notification (so you can get fragging as soon as a buddy shows up online). Unfortunately, according this review MacLive is still a little rough around the edges, as the add a friend feature is apparently broken and there isn't yet a way to send messages, manage the friends list, etc.
Nonetheless, this is a great idea, particularly if the developer James Howard continues to improve it. MacLive is a free download at Google Code.

Filed under: Apple Corporate, Apple Financial, Steve Jobs
There's some more news today on the stock options story. According to AppleInsider, it has been suggested that Steve gave Pixar director John Lasseter a questionable, backdated stock option bonus.
I must admit that I haven't really paid much attention to this story, mostly because it's still speculation and hearsay at this point. So we'll see where it goes. For now, though, it's still news.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Accessories, Hardware, Portables, Macbook Pro, MacBook
BookEndz produces pretty nifty docking stations for Mac portables, which duplicate nearly all of your ports and thus make moving a MacBook (Pro) between locations with many different peripherals quite easy. The MacBook station (right) is available in black or white and will be shipping in "late February." The MacBook Pro docking station is available now for the 15" model (no 17" model yet, but they have one for the old 17" PowerBook so it stands to reason that they'll eventually get around to it). They have stations for many older Mac portables as well (PowerBooks and iBooks).
The MacBook model looks particularly nice with a built-in 5 port powered USB hub and both VGA and DVI connectors. The MacBook version will sell for $159.00 while the 15" MacBook Pro version is $299.00.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Several readers have written to tell us that Airport Extremes are on the shelves in Apple Stores (a few California stores, to be exact). I have an authorized reseller by my house (not an actual Apple Store) which hasn't received any, but they're typically towards the end of the list.
So, does your local store have Airport Extremes on the shelves, and have you purchased one yet?Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

No, we aren't recommending that you pull a drive-by drop-off at your nearest Apple Store, but The Consumerist has a nice tip for beating those Genius Bar blues. Apparently, an anonymous and "disgruntled" Apple Store support employee sent them a tip on how to get the Geniuses behind the bar to whip out a 'Quick Drop' form, which allows you to simply fill out some paperwork and leave your Mac with the store. This allows you to work around all that pesky time waiting in line and getting diagnosed.
So if you're in a hurry, head over to The Consumerist and read the full letter to get the run-down on how to save what little time you have.
[Update: It's sounding like this tip might be bogus. We're receiving comments from those who claim to work at an Apple Store (we obviously can't verify) that the Quick Drop form doesn't exist, and the only way to receive any kind of express service at an Apple Store is to purchase a ProCare membership.]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
