Filed under: Humor, iPod Family, Found Footage
Well, this will certainly give you pause. It's a parody non-Apple iPod "ad" cum social commentary (of a sort) from Hot Sauce Academy, "a three-person sketch and improv group from New York's Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre." It pretty much speaks for itself, and might make you hide your iPod a bit better when you go out.
Warning: this video is not for the faint of heart (take our word for it).

A man named Bill Westerman has penned a very down-to-earth article listing some of the ups and downs of switching to the Mac. Following a long line of switchers, Bill pens a nice mix of typical and not-so-typical scenarios, reactions and thoughts on the experience that I haven't seen capture quite as well elsewhere (and no, I'm not complementing Bill just because he links to TUAW in the article's footer). Two of my personal favorites are the "damnit!" / "ah-ha" moments Bill mentions, as I constantly meet switchers both old and new who find themselves frustrated with one behavior or another with Mac OS X, only to discover that they're really just being held back by an embedded expectation from their time with Windows.
All in all, Bill rounds out 22 well-summarized points that switchers can look forward to experiencing on their journey to the right side of the force. The only things I can think to add are:
- #23: If you buy a MacBook/Pro, you just might have to turn into a nerd for notebook cases. You'll quickly find that most manufacturers build their cases for the lowest common denominator in the industry, which includes those 2"-thick Dells that seem to be so popular. I recommend bumming around the Mac web and tracking down a few key Mac-centric case manufacturers to scratch that itch.
- #24: Don't start dressing like Justin Long from Apple's "Get a Mac" ads, especially on a college campus. You're likely to compound any ridicule you're already receiving (see Bill's first point).

Filed under: Software, Cool tools, Universal Binary
Dave Nanian's highly regarded (and practically foolproof) backup utility SuperDuper! is now at version 2.1.4, available from the shirt-pocket.com website or via the auto update within SD itself. New and fixed items include:
- Displays are no longer kept active during a copy
- Scheduled copies work properly in Japanese locale
- Auto update mechanism extended to support OS X version-specific updates
- Extended attributes now copied for locked/unchangeable files
- Preliminary support for 10.5 "Leopard"
- Bug fix for scheduled copy logs written to the incorrect log file
- Re-fixed 10.3.9 image creation
- Fixed 5th parameter to before/after scripts
- Improved crontab handling
Now that Mike Bombich's legendary and free Carbon Copy Cloner is in beta for version 3 UB, SuperDuper may have a bit of a run for its $27.95. Glad to see that the wheels are still turning over there!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/02/27/superduper-bumped-to-2-1-4/#comments - Parallels Desktop Finally Ships
We've been noting the steady stream of Release Candidates coming out of Parallels, but today finally saw the actual release of the leading (for now) virtualization solution for the Mac. So now those hardy (or prudent) souls out there who actually wait for a shipping product can jump on this revolutionary piece of software. At this point, there's hardly anything new to say, but the many official improvements since the last release include support for: running a Boot Camp partition as a virtual machine, USB 2.0, built-in iSights, true drag and drop between OSes, Leopard and Vista and more.
The release is free for registered users. Parallels Desktop sells for $79.99 and of course you'll need a Windows license if you want to install that. A demo is available. Unfortunately, the Parallel's site is getting hammered right now, so you may have to wait a little while to grab your copy.

Filed under: Software, Productivity, Beta Beat
While there are many, many information managers for the Mac, DEVONThink is the only one that claims to have a "powerful artificial intelligence (AI) architecture that helps you organize and navigate your information collection quickly and accurately." Now after an extensive testing period, DEVONtechnologies is officially shipping DEVONthink Professional Office 1.3. The Office version adds scanning and OCR support to DEVONthink, allowing you to scan documents and make them searchable. They note that DEVONthink works particularly well with the Fujitsu SnapScan (right), for getting all that paper into your Mac.
DEVONthink comes in several versions, with Professional Office at $139.95 (though educational discounts are available) and demos are available.

Filed under: Retail, Software, Internet Tools, Deals
RapidWeaver, arguably the 800 lb. gorilla of the WYSIWYG web design space on the Mac, is being sold for $27.97 on MacZOT - a 30% discount off its retail price of $39.95. The debate around sites like MacZOT aside, I view this simply as a killer sale on a rockin' app.
Now I honestly haven't checked in on a MacZOT deal in a while, but it appears RapidWeaver is up on the block only through tonight and tomorrow, so act fast.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, iPhone
David Haskin of Computerworld is convinced that the iPhone will be the same disappointing failure that was the Newton:
"Apple seems to be repeating the [Newton] cycle again with iPhone, developing what is undoubtedly an advanced product with a remarkable interface and overcharging for it...Besides overcharging for iPhone, Apple faces significant competition, something it didn't face in 1993 when it launched Newton."
Actually, David points out the crucial difference without even trying: People know what a mobile phone is. When the Newton was initially released, the concept of a "PDA" didn't really exist. For a large part of the population, the Newton seemed like some sort of Star Trek device that couldn't possibly have a place in their lives. It was foreign and seemed complicated.
On the contrary, everyone knows what a mobile phone is, those who don't own one have at least used one and I would bet that a great number of people would love to have a phone that does its job simply, beautifully and efficiently.
