Happy hangover Monday everyone! To soothe those post-big-game blues, here's this week's man page -- lsof, the LiSt Open Files tool. If you're trying to figure out why a removable drive won't unmount or track down a stray outbound network connection, this is the tool for you.
Written by Vic Abell of Purdue University (now retired), the power and flexibility of lsof has given it the distinction of reputedly having more command-line flags than any other tool:
Yee-ikes. Let's get two quick tips taken care of before we move on to the details. First, you probably don't ever want to run lsof with no options specified, as that will generate a list of every open file on your machine (likely thousands of lines). Second, for a quick review of all those options, try lsof -h.

We've seen laptops modded into picture frames before, but this one really caught our attention. Flickr user theducks used parts from two Pismos, some plastic and a bit of creativity to make this photo frame. It has a real cool mod look that we love. The only thing is that theducks is a little skimpy on the details (hint, hint, theducks).

Apple Inc. and the Beatles' record label Apple Corps Ltd. have finally buried the hatchet and settled their very, very on-going dispute over 'Apple' related trademarks. After more than a decade of fighting over Apple's use of the name in selling music-related products, as well as music itself with the iTunes Store, the two companies are calling it a day. From the press release:
"Under this new agreement, Apple Inc. will own all of the trademarks related to "Apple" and will license certain of those trademarks back to Apple Corps for their continued use."
In other words: it seems as though Apple Inc. has won the trademarks, but we don't really know how or why. In fact, both parties are eating their own legal fees. A quote from Steve Jobs doesn't help much either:
"We love the Beatles, and it has been painful being at odds with them over these trademarks. It feels great to resolve this in a positive manner, and in a way that should remove the potential of further disagreements in the future."

In 1983, a sweaty businessman rode his bike to the office in the early morning. After ditching the bike and climbing the stairs, he clicked his computer's mouse, gazed contemplatively at the screen and answered an unexpected phone call with a smile. "Yeah," he said. "I'll be home for breakfast."
The actor was Kevin Costner (hey, he's a lefty!). The computer was an Apple Lisa and the message was simple: Buy a computer, and you'll become so obsessed with it that you'll arrive at work hours before everyone else and even your spouse will question your interest in the most mundane aspects of domestic life.
Ah, the information age. How lucky we are.

Hey, it's Monday! Let's sue Apple!
PhatRat Technology is the latest company to bring a suit against Apple, claiming that the Nike+ Sport Kit uses their technology (in part). PhatRat makes wireless performance products for athletes, including the AirRat, which lets snowboarders, BMX riders, etc., record airtime via devices in their shoes. It's this data collection and transmission via footwear that has PhatRat up in arms.

Curious to see what a Mac mini and an Airport Extreme look like side-by-side? Me, too. Luckily, the folks at iLounge have put up a gallery of just such a comparison.
They note that the footprint and shape of both devices is exactly the same, while the mini is slightly taller. While not in the gallery, iLounge notes that the Apple TV is a bit larger all around. They even go so far as to compare the devices' power bricks (if such a thing interests you), as well as the Apple TV setup.
