Wired News writer Robert Andrews had a weird sync problem with his iPod. The solution was setting his PowerBook to JST -- Jobs Standard Time.

    He writes:

I've been getting an iTunes error -48 on a brand new 5th-gen video iPod bought in December, preventing sync, and it looks like I'm not alone. Digging through discussions threads (Here, and here), it seems many new customers have hit this problem over the last two months.

It seems to be an iPod/Mac bug, and here's the solution - to get their iPod working, Apple is asking everyone to set their Mac's system clock to Cupertino time!. More here

Actually PST in general but Cupertino seems to be the advice given. That should result in a successful
device restore. Bizarre to think that these devices which ship all around the world (unclear how widespread it is) require you set your Mac back to JST (Jobs Standard Time) in order to work properly.

After setting my Powerbook to Cupertino time, restoring the iPod, then resetting the Powerbook clock to local time, I've now managed my fourth consecutive successful sync - something I don't think I've achieved since purchase.
