  • Brother P-Touch drivers unsupported in Leopard

For the GTD-focused Mac user, no tool is more important than a label printer of one's own. Since Brother's P-Touch line of labelers features models with handy USB connectors and Mac-compatible drivers, it's a popular choice... but alas, the P-Touch units don't show up on Brother's list of Leopard-compatible printers. What's a label fanatic to do?

Fortunately, the existing 10.4-compatible drivers are working for me, after reinstallation, on two separate Leopard installs and two different models of P-Touch (PT-2600 and 1500PC), but your experience may vary. The catch: of the two P-Touch editing applications, only the Quick Editor is functional -- the full-featured editor hangs on launch. I don't use the full editor often so I'm not missing it much, but if you're eager to give Brother some upgrade motivation, ask the product manager to get full P-Touch support rolled out for Leopard.

Thanks to Macintouch for Brother support info.

  • Take Control books for Leopard help ease the transition

    Filed under:

You haven't upgraded to Leopard yet -- what's the rush? -- but your friends and family are nudging you to make the move. Need reassurance, support and a helping hand to make the process easier and free of aggravation? The Take Control crew is there for you, with five ebooks aimed at Leopard upgrades and new users. Starting today you can also order print copies of the ebooks (a strange concept, but perhaps this "paper books" idea will catch on). If you buy the print book online you get the ebook version for free.

There are Take Control titles on upgrading, customizing, users & accounts, file sharing and font management in Leopard, which should be more than enough Leopard goodness for any one mortal reader to bear. All titles are $10 in ebook format except for the font book ($15). If you prefer a physical bookstore and want to pick up a guide to Leopard, check out Maria Langer's Visual Quickstart Guide to Mac OS X 10.5.

  • Path Finder 4.8.2 can now replace the Finder, supports Quick Look

The guys over at Cocoatech have released an update to their excellent Finder replacement Path Finder that adds a couple of absolute gem features in Leopard. First, Path Finder now supports the brilliant Quick Look feature. Better yet, Path Finder now integrates with the OS in that it can now intercept the "Show in Finder" calls from other applications and direct them to Path Finder. What this means it that those little magnifying glass icons in, for example, the Safari downloads window (right) will now take you to Path Finder instead of the regular Finder. This even works on Stacks where the "More in Finder" button again goes to Path Finder.

While there were some Input Manager style hacks that had previously allowed similar functionality, this is the first time this has really worked seamlessly with the OS. Thanks, apparently, is due to Apple themselves for making this possible with Leopard. This really opens the door to replacing the Finder wholesale in Leopard with Path Finder.

Path Finder 4.8.2 is available for download in a demo. It's a free update for registered users of PF4, $17.95 for upgrades from earlier versions of PF, and $34.95 for a full version.

  • Conversion Confusion: Apple's Sterling oversight

    Filed under:

Discussion has abounded the tubes recently over what appears to be a little oversight in Leopard's Conversion dashboard widget: namely the unusual omission of the Great British Pound from the currency list. Whilst some readers will no doubt shout 'So what?', as someone who routinely uses the widget, it's more than a little bit annoying - and I'm not alone there.

Whilst rumours may abound of Apple trying to stop us Brits finding out just how much more we pay for Cupertino's finest with the dollar being so weak right now, I'm sure we'll see a fix soon enough. and it seems to be working again.

  • VMware Fusion 1.1 released

VMware FusionEven though Leopard ships with Boot Camp, lots of Mac users still get their virtual groove on with VMware Fusion, and its super-slick window display tool Unity. Today VMware announced Fusion 1.1, an upgrade that sports some cool new features and improvements:
    • As expected, the upgrade now supports Leopard
    • Better 3D graphics via the "experimental support" for DirectX 9.0
    • Full Vista and XP support
    • A beta version of VMware Importer, a tool that allows users to quickly import virtual machines (including Boot Camp)
    • Overall better speed and performance
All told, there are about 25 enhancements in Fusion 1.1. Pat Lee, VMware's senior product manager for Mac products, told me that this upgrade is "all about giving the user choice." He points out that the biggest advantage of Fusion over Boot Camp is the ability to access your Windows virtual machine on the fly.

Lee says that, unlike Boot Camp, it's not necessary to shut down your Mac and reboot into Windows every time you want to get to a Windows app. Instead, just use the Unity tool to co-mingle your Windows and Mac apps right on the same screen.

On the other hand, if dual-booting is your thing, you can always use Importer to create a virtual machine.

The upgrade is free for existing customers. If you're ready to try it out for the first time, snag a free 30-day evaluation from the company Web site or purchase it for $59.99 with a $20 rebate (US only).

  • In praise of the Leopard mosaic photo screensaver

    Filed under:

It was important enough to make the 'Sparta' list, but I hadn't checked out the new mosaic mode for photo screensavers in Leopard until today -- and now I'm wondering where this has been all my life. An infinite outward zoom, creating a Photomosaic-like image that you half-squint to recognize, until... whoomp! It resolves into a picture of one of your pets/kids/scenic byways. Absolutely hypnotic, to the point that when you finally look away the screen still appears to grow and swell for a few seconds more. Put it on a big screen or HDTV and it's a conversation stopper.

Some years ago, when I was working at LIFE, the cover image for the 60th anniversary issue of the magazine was a photomosaic of Marilyn Monroe, produced by Robert Silvers of MIT. LIFE paid Silvers a steep fee to produce the image, and now we have similar capabilities in a screensaver. We truly are living in the future.

Update: Comments hint that you may not be able to run this screensaver unless you have iPhoto '08 installed; if you discover otherwise let us know.

    Thanks Rich

  • 1.1.2 Jailbreak Software Released

Conceited Software/TouchFree has just released its GUI jailbreak. This is the "final bit" that performs the jailbreak after you run OktoPrep in 1.1.1 and then upgrade to 1.1.2. The Software runs under OS X and Windows, grabs the data off your iPod touch or iPhone, upgrades it with the Jailbreak, installs Installer.app and SSH.app, and reloads it back to your unit. The whole procedure takes about 10 minutes and after, you have a fully updated 1.1.2 jailbroken system.

You will need to downgrade to 1.1.1 if you bought a system with 1.1.2 already installed. This is discussed in the README.txt file in the zip and at the this jailbreakme.com webpage. This procedure is only for iTunes-activated iTunes and iPod touches--"hactivated" iPhones need not apply. That's because once you upgrade to 1.1.2, you'll need to be able to have a phone that's activated before running the program.

You can read more about my personal 1.1.2 jailbreaking in this earlier post.

Update: If you're missing the readline library (i.e. iPhuc doesn't work for you), you can download it here. Extract the zip to your Desktop, then in Terminal, type "sudo cp ~/Desktop/opt/local/lib/libreadline.5.2.dylib /opt/local/lib". You may need to sudo mkdir the /opt/local/lib folder first.

    Update: Intel Only. (Thanks SmileyDude)
