  • Feeling lucky? Firefox 3 beta 1 now downloadable

Running beta versions of your primary browser is a little like converting your car to run on cooking oil biodiesel. It's probably going to work OK, but be prepared for a few surprises along the journey. If you're ready for the social, swing by the Mozillaplex and download your copy of Firefox 3.0 beta 1, but note the warning: "We do not recommend that anyone other than developers and testers download the Firefox 3 Beta 1 milestone release." Gotcha.

The beta DMG clocks in at 17 MB and new features/improvements include (quoting):
    • Improved security features such as: better presentation of website identity and security, malware protection, stricter SSL error pages, anti-virus integration in the download manager, and version checking for insecure plugins.
    • Improved ease of use through: better password management, easier add-on installation, new download manager with resumable downloading, full page zoom, animated tab strip, and better integration with Windows Vista and Mac OS X.
    • Richer personalization through: one-click bookmarking, smart search bookmark folders, direct typing in location bar searches your history and bookmarks for URLs and page titles, ability to register web applications as protocol handlers, and better customization of download actions for file types.
    • Improved platform features such as: new graphics and font rendering architecture, major changes to the HTML rendering engine to provide better CSS, float-, and table layout support, native web page form controls, colour profile management, and offline application support.
    • Performance improvements such as: better data reliability for user profiles, architectural improvements to speed up page rendering, over 300 memory leak fixes, and a new XPCOM cycle collector to reduce entire classes of leaks.
Check out the release notes for more details. Note that Techcrunch's Duncan Riley is not impressed with FF3's memory usage profile (thanks Nik).

  • Princesshay (UK) Retail Store to open this weekend

Apple's push to open more retail stores outside the US continues, with our Cupertino friends announcing the opening of the thirteenth UK retail store in Exeter's Princesshay Centre for this coming Saturday (24th November).

As with every store opening, there's commemorative t-shirts available to the first 1,000 folks through the door, and a 'Digital Lifestyle Collection' up for grabs in the raffle, which includes a Black MacBook and Silver iPod nano. If there's any TUAW operatives visiting Princesshay this weekend, do send us stories and photos - and let's hope you score a t-shirt!

  • PandoraJam 1.2

Back in August, we told you about PandoraJam - a rather great tool for recording music from Pandora's Free Internet Radio service.

Not content with Airport Express streaming, Last.fm scrobbling and more, developers BitCartel are preparing to release a new version just in time for Thanksgiving - and gave TUAW a sneak peek in advance of tomorrow's release. So what's new?

Apart from a few fixes to ensure Leopard compatibility, there's one neat feature that fans of the Airport Express streaming will want to get their hands on: Apple Remote support. If you've been wanting to use Pandora and hanker after the ability to control tracks from afar this might be just the thing. Of course, one of the best things about Pandora itself is that it learns from your 'thumbs up' or 'thumbs down' ratings to a track, adjusting your personalised radio station accordingly. If you're controlling PandoraJam from your Apple Remote, rating can now be done either by tapping, or holding down, the 'Home' button, or any other AR key-press you desire. You can also 'blank out' any other applications that might respond to the Apple Remote too, for uninterrupted playback and recording.

PandoraJam 1.2 is a free update to registered customers, and a license costs $15. Due to Pandora's licensing regulations, you'll also need to be in the U.S. or U.K. to access the service.

  • Regarding the IMEI tracking brouhaha

Late last night, we got word that Dan over at Uneasy Silence had discovered a URL embedded into two iPhone programs. The URL, which is formatted to include your iPhone's equipment ID (IMEI), apparently contacts Apple when you use the weather and stocks programs.

TUAW took a look at these programs and can confirm that the URL appears in both. When we tried connecting to Apple, the URLs did not return any data, further supporting Dan's concern that these were used for tracking purposes. We tried with both valid IMEI numbers and spoofed ones.

So is Apple using this data for nefarious tracking purposes? That point remains less clear. It's possible that Apple added this URL for future use to restrict data access to those iPhones with valid AT&T accounts--your IMEI gets registered with your phone number. It's also possible that Apple uses this URL to track activity, i.e. how much use per account for internal auditing.

One thing that is very clear, as Dan points out, is that active iPhone users have consented to data collection in the end user agreement. Beyond that, what data is collected, and how it is used remains fuzzy. Perhaps Apple will now issue a statement clarifying the situation and put user fears to rest.

Update; Gizmodo reports that sniffers detect no actual IMEI data being sent at this time. If you'd like to personally confirm the two URLs we found, you can easily do so by copying the two executables to your computer and issuing the strings command.
