- iPhone 101: Quickly delete videos
Even an 8GB iPhone will run out of storage space quickly once a few space-hogging videos are uploaded. The good news is that, unlike audio, videos can be deleted without connecting to a computer.
There are two ways to accomplish this. First, navigate to the video list on the iPhone's iPod software. Drag your finger across a video's title from left to right and the red "Delete" button will appear, as if you were removing email messages. Tap it, and your video will be deleted.
The second method happens after watching a movie. Once it's done, you'll be presented with a dialog box asking if you want to remove the video to save space. Touch "Yes."
No need to carry "Saw II" around after you've watched it, right?Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Our good friends in Redmond dropped us a note concerning Messenger for the Mac's future (based on this post). The Mac BU wants all Mac users to rest assured that Messenger for the Mac 6.0 will be included with Microsoft Office 2008 for the Mac. Not only is Messenger for the Mac 6.0 alive and well, the Mac BU's crack team of coders are hard at work on Messenger for Mac 7.0 which will have long awaited audio/video capabilities (and which is soon to be released into the hands of some lucky enterprise beta participants, mostly to test out the Office Communication Server 2007 integration).
This is welcome news to me because I use Messenger for the Mac everyday at my day job. I couldn't do my work without it (and who wants to run a VM for an IM client? Not this guy).Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Multimedia, Odds and ends, Steve Jobs, Apple
From the "whatever you say, Eisner" department, Engadget brings news that former Disney honcho Michael Eisner is blaming the guy who originally wore the black turtleneck and jeans for the Writers Guild of America strike, of all things. In an interview with a CNET blog, Eisner says that Steve Jobs is taking media companies "to the cleaners," and that Jobsy's the one to blame for the writers' low pay on digital media distribution. "If I was a union," he says, undoubtedly making union leaders' heads everywhere fold back in on themselves with the irony, "I'd be striking up wherever he is."
Strange then, that this same day, we also get a story about how Radiohead is doing with their online distribution deal. You'll remember that they passed on iTunes to distribute their music themselves, and now we're hearing that, after all is said and done, Radiohead earned an average of $2.26 per album by asking listeners to download the album for free and pay them whatever they thought it was worth. "$2.26 per album?" you say. "They got screwed! iTunes charges $10!"
Ah yes, but apparently Radiohead would have made about $1 per album if they'd gone through traditional channels. So actually, the creators doubled their income per sale. Eisner's crazy-- Jobs isn't to blame for this strike, it's content distributors who don't pay content creators enough for digital distribution. But given that Radiohead is cashing in (and gaining public goodwill to boot), maybe the Writers Guild have a lesson to learn here as well.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

TUAW reader Simon wrote in to us, to share one of his favorite new Leopard features--and its unexpected consequences. After clicking on an All Images search, he was astonished to find any number of odd gifs and jpgs pertaining to, um, Viagra, and er, male enhancement. He quickly realized that All Images was displaying bits (and we do mean bits) from Mail's download cache. This means that although he set Mail to not download HTML images, they're getting downloaded anyway. Simple annoyance or possible security breech? You tell us in the comments.

Filed under: Gaming, iPod Family, Reviews
When I saw Phase in the iTunes store, I thought that for five bucks it was worth giving a try. Phase is the new music game that provides Tap-Tap-Revolution-style gameplay, albeit for standard iPods rather than the iPhone. I added it to my cart, charged it to my long-suffering Visa card, and synced it to my iPod to see how well it would play.

Hey there, Austin Powers, are you having trouble getting your Time Machine to be-have? Two Apple tech notes spotted by Macfixit.com point up a pair of issues that may prevent your backup mojo from working.
First, if Time Machine backs up about 10 gigabytes and then stalls out, you probably need to reformat your target drive with either GUID or APM partitioning (depending on whether you're backing up an Intel or a PPC machine; no word on what to do if you plan to back up a mixed environment to the same drive). Second, if your backup files don't show up in the Space: 1999 interface, chances are you've got non-alphanumeric characters in your computer name, and you'll have to change that before TM will work properly. If you've upgraded your computer, you need to give the new machine the same name as the old one.
It's not yet clear why the machine name is crucial to proper TM functionality -- perhaps the path names need to be "UNIX legal" to work with TM's linking scheme? In any case, try these two tips if your Time Machine is trapped in feudal Japan.

Filed under: iLife, Tips and tricks, Troubleshooting, TUAW Tips, Leopard
UK-based TUAW reader Russell Copus wrote in to tell us about his problems scheduling an iCal event based on email text. When he selected "Your shopping will be delivered on 07-11-2007 between 21:00 and 23:00" and tried to Create new iCal Event from that text, Leopard created a calendar event for July 11th, 2007.
So to check this out, I went ahead and mailed the same text. After receiving the letter, I then selected it and choose Create New iCal Event. Sure enough, it also created the July 11th date.
Next I popped over to International settings and selected the Formats tab. There I switched from using US date formats to UK ones. To do this, I selected United Kingdom from the Region: pop-up menu.
Upon returning to Mail, I once again created a new iCal event using the same letter. This time it created the proper iCal appointment in November rather than July.

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Hardware, Portables, Apple, MacBook
We should probably have some due diligence on the latest rumors streaming around the Apple blogosphere, so here you go: CNET is claiming that Asus is helping Apple build a sweet new Tablet PC. This is just the latest in a long line of rumors about an ultraportable, and we've heard this so much by now that even if it isn't true, there are probably engineers at Apple right now working on how to make it a reality anyway.
I tend to agree with Macenstein: what do we need an Apple Tablet for, anyway? The whole ultraportable idea seems to be based on the fact that people want to see it made, not necessarily that anyone is walking around with an iPhone and a MacBook and still asking for yet another computer to carry around. Don't get me wrong-- if anyone can find a hidden niche for beautiful, usable products, Apple can, but I just don't see where an iTablet would fit in the hierarchy.
Now, the last time I speculated on Apple releases (I said we wouldn't see new MacBooks for a while), Apple decided to release MacBook updates just hours later, so for everyone out there hoping to see a new Apple Tablet, try this on: my guess is that Apple won't release an iTablet in January. Now, when I'm dead wrong (as usual), I'll just be able to claim that I predicted the opposite of what I thought so we'd get the product we wanted.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

As far as "Back to My Mac" is concerned, Apple presents it as a .Mac-only enhancement. Melvin Rivera pointed us to his blog post showing how to use Back to My Mac with iChat. This technique isn't for the faint of heart. It involves editing system preferences, modifying AppleScript, and causing your computer to always stay awake. Other than that, it's a great way to get around the Back to My Mac limitations and use your computer remotely.

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/11/07/use-back-to-my-mac-without-mac/#comments - Reported Seagate drive failures may affect Mac laptops
Filed under: Portables, Macbook Pro
UK drive recovery company Retrodata is warning customers of a rash of failures involving a particular Seagate drive model, a SATA unit made in China and used in Apple laptops. This specific mechanism, according to Retrodata's intake notes, seems to be prone to a spectacular self-destruct where the drive heads auger into the platter, rendering the data mostly dead.
How to spot the potentially affected drive: check System Profiler under Serial ATA, and if you have a Seagate drive with a 7.01 firmware revision... well, double-check those backups.
As yet, we have not seen confirmation of this problem from either Seagate or domestic drive recovery vendors, but better safe than sorry, no?

It's the end of innocence, according to the BBC, the time when you'll have to sit down your children and tell them about the birds, the bees, and the recent Mac Trojan (no, not that kind of Trojan) security compromises. There's little new or ground breaking in the BBC article but their adherence to the Safe-Sex/Safe-Computing paradigm is pretty hilarious. We all knew that as the Mac became more popular as a platform that it would start to be attacked more regularly and last week's exploits confirms this new reality. On the one hand, a wider installation base means better software and easier repairs. On the other hand, Mac OS X security becomes a bigger and bigger target.
