- iPhone Elite: 1.1.2 downgraded to unlock (updated)
Filed under: Hacks, Odds and ends, Open Source, Apple, iPhone
The iPhone elite dev team says they've unlocked 1.1.2. Downloads are here on the Google code site. This is unconfirmed and untested as of right now, but if you just can't wait to get your 1.1.2 iPhone unlocked, there you go. Someone ping us in the comments below and let us know if it works for real.
Not quite as fast as the iPod touch jailbreak, but still pretty darn fast. Your move, Apple.
Update: Thankfully, Ibrahim clarifies in the comments, because I'm not sure I understand myself. The team has basically figured out a way to downgrade 1.1.2 to 1.0.2 or 1.1.1 and unlock it. They haven't actually unlocked the 1.1.2 iPhone, because it hasn't been jailbroken yet, but they have unlocked the firmware.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

T-Mobile is reporting that 10,000 iPhones were sold in Germany on the first day of sales. A store in Cologne re-opened at 12:01 AM for the event, and T-Mobile reps distributed blankets, umbrellas and warm snacks to shoppers standing in wind and rain.
No activation numbers have been released yet. It has been speculated that demand will be greater than supply during the holiday shopping season, but a T-Mobile spokesman told Reuters: "We have plenty."
To our German readers: Enjoy your iPhones! Let us know how it goes.

Filed under: Education, Apple, Security, MacBook
Here's an interesting little tidbit. Apparently Apple has just landed large contracts to supply MacBooks to local school districts in Kansas City and southwest Louisiana. What's interesting though is that Apple is apparently customizing these MacBooks to meet various security requirements of the districts. The Kansas City Star notes that each of the computers has a sticker "clearly identifying them as the property of the Kansas City, Kan., public schools... [which] will not come off without virtually destroying the laptop." Furthermore, each computer will apparently have a GPS tracker and even "a remote device to destroy the hard drive" if stolen. One wonders whether Apple might eventually make these sort of security features available to the general public.
Update: Re-reading the article, It's not clear whether the modifications are being doing by Apple or by some third-party after purchase.

Filed under: iPod Family, Hacks, iPhone
After a really late night, I had the privilege of being able to test some of the jailbreak software this morning. This is not the final jailbreak software. That will involve using a nice graphical user interface. For now, I'm invited to use the ugly command-line stuff, which is still a great opportunity.Starting in 1.1.1
The key to the 1.1.2 jailbreak is to prepare your system in 1.1.1 before you upgrade. This meant I had to downgrade from 1.1.2.
I quit iTunes and connected to my iPhone using iPhuc. It's not an especially recent version of iPhuc but it did offer two key features: enterrecovery and filecopytophone. Using iPhuc, I typed "enterrecovery", let my iPhone do exactly that--enter recovery mode--and quit.
Update: Heads up everyone. The general purpose post-upgrade tool has not been generally released. If you oktoprepped and upgraded you are fine--the tool will follow soon--but you really don't want to do that until the tool gets released.

Finally. The Canadian iPhone. Joe Maur pointed me to this new iPhone for the Holidays page at the Apple Canada online store. So the wait is over. Soon, you'll be able to pay way too much to Rogers for your very own personal iPhone--although we have yet to find plan specifics. Happy Holidays, Canada! Thanks Joe
Update: Readers are saying that this is just a copied US store page and shouldn't be taken as an actual Canadian release. My bad.

Filed under: Cool tools, Hacks, Tips and tricks, iPhone
If you haven't figured it out yet, I'm one of those people who loves it when my computer grabs stats on what I'm up to (though I'm not so much on the whole reporting to other companies thing-- I'd prefer to keep my activities to myself). That's why I love the idea of iphonelogd, a little Ruby script that grabs your call history off of your iPhone, and loads it right into iCal as a calendar with a listing of events.
Pretty sweet. And while it's great that the iPhone's call history already goes way, way back-- no more getting angry that my phone didn't save the number of the girl that called me last Tuesday-- it's even better to have every call logged in iCal with zero effort. You do have to actually run the script, but with a little launchd tweaking, that is easily accomplished as regularly as you restart your Mac. This is exactly what the iPhone promised-- a cell phone that works as well with your Mac as the iPod does.

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Software, Apple, Developer, iPhone
Chris F was kind enough to send along his long (and dare I say, a little silly-- look at that "cupcake deliciousness growth over time" graph at the bottom) interview with Alex Schafer, creator of what Erica called "the first native IM client for the iPhone," ApolloIM. After a short chat about the game that's got my vote for Game of the Year, Portal, they get into how Alex does his developing and how ApolloIM came together.
He calls IM the "one glaring omission from the iPhone," and says that while they're taking their time making sure things are just right (not to mention that he's got the sword over his head of third-party development), they're planning to come up with a product that fills that role of IM on the iPhone. Whatever Apple's plan for third parties turns out to be (Schafer says he's hoping for at least a socket and "20k of r/w space" for Apollo to work), he says his team is doing as much in advance as they can.
Definitely an interesting interview to check out. I hope Schafer gets his 20k and more-- instant messenging is definitely the thing I miss most on the iPhone as well.

Filed under: Software, Odds and ends, Developer
Macworld brings news that everyone's favorite tattletale, Little Snitch, has been updated to version 2.0. The new version brings a whole host of updates, including a new Network Monitor, which will let you know about all outgoing and incoming network traffic. There's also support for IPV6, and a better help and traffic filtering system. Oh, and perhaps most importantly, the whole thing's been overhauled and is now compatible with a little thing called Leopard. I haven't upgraded yet, but considering those other "next-gen" operating systems, I'm not sure if I should.
Little Snitch 1 users may be able to upgrade for free (if your version number starts with "32"), if not you pay a discounted rate. If you haven't started using Little Snitch yet, you can try the eval version, or pay $24.95 for the full app. If you have a lot of network traffic coming in and out of your Mac, you might want to consider it-- how else will you know what's coming through there?Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

While poor Nik finishes a restless, cold night in Regent Street, the first European iPhones are already in the hands of eager customers in Köln (Cologne), Germany. Macnotes.de has the pictures and the story from the single-store T-Mobile midnight madness launch; online sales in Germany also commenced at midnight, and retail sales across the rest of the country are scheduled for later today. One bonus for the crowd (estimated at 300 or more) of shoppers at the introduction in Köln -- free pretzels from T-Mobile. Yum!
You can see a reasonable Google translation of the Macnotes page here. To all our German readers and new iPhone owners: Es is ganz toll, das Sie konnen jetzt die iPhone Erfahrung haben; sag uns, wie es geht mit die neuen Super-Handys.
