- Enable App Hiding on your iPhone
Filed under: iPod Family, Hacks, How-tos, iPhone
TUAW reader Ian Donaldson discovered that the SBEnableAppReveal preference allowed you to double-tap hidden applications to reveal them--and double-tap them again to re-hide them. I decided to see if I could extend this behavior to other applications. After a bit of testing, I discovered the SBIsRevealable preference in the three keynote applications: YouTube, Safari and iTunes. So after modifying plutil to allow it to set Boolean values as well as strings, I went ahead and issued the following command:
iphone # plutil -1 SBIsRevealable /Applications/*.app/Info.plist
After restarting, I was pleased to find that pretty much all my applications were hidden and could now use the double-tap-to-reveal trick. The three holdouts? Photos, Camera, and iPod, all three of which use special "roles" in their Info.plist files. These roles let the Slideshow app appear as both "Photos" and "Cameras" on the iPhone, and MobileMusicPlayer as "Music" and "Video" on the iPod touch and "iPod" on the iPhone.

TUAW reader Mauro writes that after running the 1.1.2 jailbreak, YouTube no longer works. He asks: "Any idea how to solve this problem?" Here is a simple guide from Ging of the South that will help.
The guide walks you through editing a particular property list to add a device certificate that authorizes your iPhone or iPod touch. The Ging page provides the certificate text for you to paste into Property List Editor. If you're not on a Mac, you can use my plutil utility to convert the file to XML format and then edit it with your favorite text editor.
Thanks Drudge

Deafmac.org reports that AT&T has withdrawn its $27.99/month no-voice plan, stating the offer was generated in error. AT&T writes that although they offer many options for the deaf community, they will not offer an iPhone plan. After Deafmac originally posted about the deal, AT&T was apparently contacted by enough hearing customers that they reconsidered their offerWhat this says to me is that there are people who love the EDGE connectivity the iPhone offers but who just don't need to use their iPhones as a voice device. Will Apple and AT&T step up to the plate and extend the philosophy of Universal Access to at least the hearing impaired community or is too much revenue on the line?
Thanks, Nick.

I've got a 4-year-old and a 2-year-old, so Photo Booth is a big hit in my house. They love to mug for the camera and send silly snapshot to grandma and grandpa. I've used it quite a bit, and thought I knew all the tricks.
This morning, Macsupport has pointed out a few new ones. First, you can disable the countdown if you want to snap a photo immediately by Option-clicking the shutter button. Shift-click to disable the flash and finally press both the option and shift key to immediately snap a photo with no flash.
These tricks seem to be unique to Leopard.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: iPod Family, Cool tools, Hacks
Marian, one of our favorite iPod touch hackers, has added a mic preamp to his iPod touch dock connector. Hack-a-day writes that he built the entire circuit to fit within a standard iPod dock connector. In addition, Marian sent along a picture of his rig while under development (check it out after the jump). It looks like the iPod touch-as-recording device is well under way towards getting this technology developed for general consumption!

Josh Walker tipped us off to his post today about AT&T removing their online iPhone plan specification options. You can no longer go online and take EDGE off your plan. In addition, customer support representatives reportedly will no longer remove EDGE as a feature option, as they did for me when I called up a week or two back.
So what does this mean for iPhone customers? It looks like my contract-free $29.99/month iPhone option is officially at a dead end, at least for now. As for those of us who cancelled our EDGE service when the option was in play, we'll have to wait and see what AT&T decides to do.
Removing EDGE is not a great option for people who use their iPhone on the road--for maps and directions, for SMS, and so forth. For those of us who live and work around ubiquitous WiFi hotspots and who rarely, if ever, use the data features on the go, this downgrade was a great way to save $240/year.
Let us know in the comments if you've recently attempted to remove EDGE from your plan and whether you succeeded in your efforts.
Update: Reader Zak Kitzmiller says this is a normal downtime screen that regularly occurs. Have you been able to remove EDGE recently? Let us know.

The iPhone has been a big financial win for Apple. So, as pretty much everyone and their brother expected, Apple will follow up the current EDGE version with a true 3G iPhone in 2008: "later next year", according to Jobs back in September. Today, AT&T's CEO Randall Stephenson confirmed a 2008 ship date.Apple's dedication to evolving the iPhone product line may indicate further development of non-phone platforms including the touch line and, perhaps, a larger tablet computer. Apple is not alone in exploring the wireless tablet market. Amazon recently introduced the Kindle e-reader, which sells for about the same price as an iPhone and offers fee-free (albeit limited) wireless browsing. (It also has a crappy 256 MB onboard, so if you want to talk about evolutionary dead ends, the Kindle may not survive rekindling.)
Thanks everyone who sent this in.

I'll admit that I was a fan of Google Desktop at first, what with the rapid browser previews of searched email and the ability to crunch through web histories and past searches. Over time, unfortunately, GD's reindexing began to feel a mite sluggish, and I eventually regretfully uninstalled it in the interest of better performance.
Now, with the announcement of native access to Google Gadgets bundled in with Desktop, allowing me to put my favorite Gadgets right in the Dashboard with no mussing about, I figured I'd give GD another shot, and take the reindexing hit or simply turn the search features off.
Guess what? As noted in this comment, a subtle "Choose your own features" link on Google's download page lets you split up the two functions of GD, and just install the Gadget manager without the desktop search component. Very nice!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Over the weekend, security researchers announced a vulnerability in QuickTime's handling of the RTSP streaming protocol, and Windows-only exploit code is already circulating. The flaw allows attackers to craft specially formatted RTSP responses that cause a buffer overflow, and as a result they can execute arbitrary code in the context of the logged-in user. Unfortunately, there are plenty of ways to get someone to click a malicious RTSP link, including sending it in email or including it on a website. While Symantec notes that IE and Safari for Windows appear to be resistant to the exploit code, opening a malicious RTSP link in current versions of Firefox or in QuickTime Player would allow the exploit to run.
For now, there is no Mac version of the exploit (cold comfort to the millions of iTunes for Windows users); hopefully there will be a QuickTime security patch on both platforms before any additional exposure occurs. Rich Mogull at TidBITS has some helpful tips for securing your network, including blocking the RTSP protocol both at the firewall and for outbound connections via Little Snitch.
Update 10:30 am Thursday: Commenter Moulles points out that a cross-platform exploit for the RTSP flaw, which could target either PCs or Macs, has now been published.

One of my great Dock tricks (and I use the term 'trick' loosely), no longer works in Leopard. The old 'put a folder in the Dock and get a hierarchical menu' trick has been obsoleted by Stacks. Stacks are pretty, I'll give Apple that, but they aren't as useful to people who have lots of Documents or Apps on their Macs. Good thing for Quay 1.0 has now been released and my hierarchical menus are back!
Not only are they back, but they're better than ever. Quay allows you to set the way the menu is sorted, the size of the icons on that menu, and the look of the Dock icon. Another thing worth noting is that 'Quay folders' appear on the right side of the Dock separator, as they should, and Quay itself doesn't have to be running in order for these 'Quay Menus' to work.
The developer notes that no undocumented APIs are used, and the Dock isn't hacked in anyway. Quay costs €7, and there is no free trial (if you want more than one Quay folder though, you have to pony up the cash).Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Odds and ends, Leopard
Here's a subtle treat in the Leopard Dashboard: the Clock widget, never really the source of much excitement ("Oooh, look -- it's 4 am in Tangiers!") now does a little dance, makes a little love, and gets down tonight when you change time zones. As in the movie above, you can watch the hands whirl about to the new time; the clock face gradually switches from black to white to indicate daylight hours in the new zone. How cute!
Update: Just to clarify, what's new in Leopard is the movement of the clock hands. The white/black clock face swap was present in 10.4 as well, although it was instantaneous instead of smoothly animated.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
